As Trump/Iran News Breaks KGO/Rothmann 86ed by Cal Basketball

BY NOW YOU KNOW: the Trump takeout of Iran's defense guru(and others) was BIG NEWS.

The story broke last night just before 6 PM (local time) a ripe red-herring for news talk, right?

Only KGO and John Rothmann had a different topic: Cal basketball!

Again, Rothmann had an abbreviated program thanks to a Bears basketball contest at Stanford, hardly a consolation to those expecting a discussion of a very key development in Middle-East/USA relationship. Some even say, the beginning of a war. But listeners expecting that back and forth, especially an exasperated Rothmann were dealt a lousy hand.

Again, KGO is committed, contactually, to CAL basketball. It makes no sense because basketball fans are frustrated and news talk people have no where to go when there's a schedule conflict, like Thursday night. The most logical thing would be for a switch to KNBR FM or other Cumulus property in the event of a breaking news event --it would please both sides but logic apparently isn't an option here.

What happens if there's a local Bay Area story of significance? Terrorism, a natural disaster? Will KGO stick with hoops?

  1. So Donnie had a top Iranian commander killed because an American mercenary was killed. Soldiers of fortune, aka "contractors" are not members of the US military.Iraq is a sovereign nation. Why are we still there now in the first place? Killing Persians, also from a sovereign nation to avenge Bibi's ego and help get Donnie reelected is neither smart, nor moral.

    1. Nor anything new. Clinton did the same thing in '98.

  2. I’d much prefer to hear Cal basketball than listen to Rothmann lead a bitch session about Trump

    2. HOW DARE YOU

John likes to point out that he is a 4th generation San Franciscan and his children are 5th generation.

      So 11.

    1. No, I'm a fan of John's. He is well informed on Israel, and I'm a strong supporter of Israel having lived on a kibbutz. He is also a presidential historian which is another one of my interests. I have a feeling that those who say John is not intelligent and well informed, just disagree with him, and cannot imagine that someone they disagree with could still be intelligent and well informed.

  5. I would challenge your claim that the killing of Soleimani has Bay Area implications. This is a national story and it's being covered by satellite channels as well as KQED and the Progressive 910 AM. There's no need for KGO to go crazy over this story. I agree that Cal basketball doesn't do much for me. I suspect it hurts the ratings, but they have a contract to air it.

Today (Friday), Pat Thurston is going on and on about the Soleimani killing as if World War III were about to erupt. I question her credibility on international matters since I heard her once insist on the air that Russia was part of NATO. She even argued with callers who were trying to remind her of history.

If KGO wants to attract listeners, it should focus on something nobody else is doing -- local topics. Things that matter to everybody. The death of an Iranian general isn't really relevant to anyone in the Bay Area. It's "so what?" material. And everybody else is doing it. Try something unique, original and authenic.

The great thing about local topics is that hosts don't have to rely on talking points sent into the station, and they don't have to make embarrassing mistakes like insisting Russia is in NATO.

Local topics allow hosts to talk about things they know and the listeners know -- like how bad the traffic is, or how the service has decline at coffee shops, the long lines at the DMV, or people's reaction to homeless people living in parklets next to cafe tables.

And the list of local topics is endless. Just go outside and walk around. Talk to people.

Let's fact it, the hosts on KGO don't know much about national or international subjects. And when they're challenged by callers, they have to turn down the caller's volume, talk over them, and then hang up on them. You hear it every hour. It's bad radio. At better stations, or at the KGO of old, the host would have a debate with these callers. But the current KGO hosts aren't well enough informed to engage in a debate. At least with local subjects, they can bring their own experiences into the conversation.

For 2020, I hope the New Year's resolution of KGO's management is to become a LOCAL station again. Quit trying to be NPR or MSNBC.

    2. Rich I was thinking...

With the new year and the new decade coming, should you consider letting old Stan back into the fold for a few to see how it works?

I was one of his biggest critics and would always call out the ridiculous takes and shots he threw at you. It was just an idea.

  6. KGO does do local shows, both John and Pat has done numerous shows on PG&E, the fires, homelessness others as well. I for one like their shows on ALL subjects, when it comes to politics and the middle east I prefer John over Pat, today I was switching back on forth between Pat and Tom Sullivan, to get an alternative view. This is a huge story and all other radio station was talking about it, and if KGO had not, they would be criticized for that. You can't please all the people all the time.

  7. Nobody would notice if it were preempted, other than the Cal athletic department. Nobody is listening to Cal basketball on the radio other than families of the coaches.

  8. Excellent comment there, 1:37pm, well said and I agree, the host are not well informed or versed in engaging debate. It is an echo chamber of the TDS inflicted and a quick flip to KSFO has the equally nauseating "this is how a 9/11 happens..." when the Dems act as they do.

Little wonder alt-news influence has expanded...btw, Iran doesn't have sleeper cells here, but that mainstream news mantra sure sets it up for an event to be blamed on them. It certainly isn't out of the question but such divergent thinking does not exist in the mainstream and why so many don't bother with it anymore.

  11. ONE can understand when the uneducated deplorable retards succumb to the seduction of comb over Caligula, but what a huge disappointment to hear fat conspiracy theorist alex Jones contort himself into a pretzel to defend Drumpf’s idiotic terrorist act against Iran. Come on man!!!

  12. The hand-wringing by the left make them seem afraid of Iran. I can't wait until A & G get back for some rational thinking. Jon Rothman is an egotistical boar.

    1. John Rothmann is a "boar", you say? Seriously? Did you mean he was a wild, porcine animal? Shouldn't you be at the recruiting station with your spawn , signing up to go kill Persians for Bibi and Donnie?

  13. John Rothman is a bore to those who don't like in depth discussions of subjects, or those who don't agree with his stand and cannot tolerate another point of view. I always try to defend John against these attacks, but I'm getting the feeling I'm wasting my time. As for A&G I don't dislike as much as Rich or other liberals, first of all they can be funny, and they are not all about politics, the offer a different point of view, I don't agree most of the time, but that does not mean I cannot listen to them.

  14. Every host I agree with is brilliant - everyone I don't is an idiot!

  15. That is unfortunately the way many feel. I myself is guilty of it, I cannot listen to Hannity or Rush, although I do listen to Tom Sullivan, even though I often disagree with his politics, I also liked Michael Medved when he was heard in this area, often choosing these 2 conservatives over more liberal ones.

  16. The Cal basketball game (s) should be moved back over to KSFO. College basketball is not a big deal in the bay area and it really doesn't make much sense to waste a 50kW signal on something that has such a meager following
