415 Media Extra: CBS Plans 'Major Restructuring' at KPIX; Blowout on Front Burner; Bastida Tight Wire
CBS PLANS BIG BLOWOUT AT KPIX
A well-placed source says Black Rock plans "major restructuring" at 855 Battery. That not only includes on-air personnel but management too.
A veteran PIX source: "No one is safe." Anchors, star reporters included.
Something to note: Veteran news anchor, Ken Bastiuda? His contract is up in 2021. Bastida and his $500K salary is in jeopardy. CBS is aware the Bay Area native is probably done after next year.
Source to 415 Media:
"He may think about staying but then again, CBS might buy him out and say "thanks for your job, enjoy life, bye bye!"
CBS corporate O and O staff held a secret all-day meeting at 855 Battery on Friday and Monday.
Bastida might not be alone.
*As usual. I'm all over it.

Sometimes these meetings, as in any 24/7 or near 24/7 company has to do with staffing.
ReplyDeleteOf course and as previously mentioned, pay is part of the cost of staffing. I'm not familiar with the revenues and the costs of labor in this field. Weather $100K people are not as valuable as $500K people I couldn't say.
Another factor is headcount. Are 32 on-air personalities actually needed? Is a bigger staff needed? I do remember E. Cook is on maternity leave and when is she returning? Are any others voluntarily leaving for some reason? Some are listed in two disciplines such as "Anchor" and "Reporter", etc. Should everyone have two functions? Why or why not? With the newer "Gig Worker Laws", is there an exemption if any are independent contractors? Are all employees of KPIX or some other contracted labor company? How's the headcount of the non-listed support staff, whether camera persons, drivers, security, editors, producers, etc.
And most important for a long meeting, how was the provided food, if any?
I don't watch KPIX enough to remember who all is its news team. They are:
Anne Makovec, Anchor & Reporter
Kenny Choi, Anchor
Veronica De La Cruz, Anchor
Michelle Griego, Anchor
Elizabeth Cook, Anchor & Reporter
Allen Martin, Anchor & Reporter
Ken Bastida, Anchor
Juliette Goodrich, Anchor
Mark Neerman, News Director
Katie Nielsen, Reporter
Mary Lee, Reporter & Weather
Susie Steimle, Reporter
John Ramos, Reporter
Wilson Walker, Reporter
Jackie Ward, Reporter
Emily Turner, Reporter
Maria Medina, Reporter
Devin Fehely, Reporter
Betty Yu, Reporter
Andria Borba, Reporter
Don Ford, Reporter
Da Lin, Reporter
Kiet Do, Reporter
Joe Vazquez, Reporter
Len Ramirez, Reporter
Sharon Chin, Reporter
Juliette Goodrich, Reporter
Andrea Nakano, Sports

Correction, E. Cook is back.
DeleteI only watch when Elizabeth Cook wears her Seinfeld fluffy pirate blouse...Priceless...
DeleteI'd love to see a local station just clean the total house and start over. Maybe make the only bay area news station that caters to just local News, Weather, Business and Sports. Cut all the stupid chatter and talk.
ReplyDeleteMr. Lieberman: (Pretend) your job is to fire half the PIX staff on @L-2's roster above. Who stays and who goes?
ReplyDeleteLets just go scorched earth. Da Lin anchor at 5,6 and 11
DeleteCook in the morning, replacing Griego? VDLC out? Besides Jules, who else will withstand the eventual major shakeup?
ReplyDeleteVDLC, Griego, Bastida out. You would not make the product worse and probably improve the morale in the building.
DeleteWhat you’re all forgetting is that there are contracts backed the union, even personal services contracts. For instance, a guy like Bastida has a PSC as he works way over scale, but the work rules of the union still apply-who knows he may have even negotiated better work rules than what’s in the basic contract.
DeleteWhen working someone more than contracted then OT, time and a half, or some other more expensive OT formula is used.Long term use of OT is designed to be prohibitive to management’s bottom line.
So management may have some contractual room to maneuver, but moves resembling scorched earth are going to bring on lawyers and grievances.
BTW, I know he is this blog’s favorite, but I’m NOT watching or listening to Dahhhh Lihhhnnhhh anchor any cast.
Any chance KPIX will bring back Milt Kahn?
ReplyDeleteOn another note, what happened to Darren Peck? I thought he did an adequate job.
ReplyDeleteNo mention that today while ABC, CBS, NBC O & O's ran impeachment coverage, Fox went with its regular weekday programming? At least acknowledge that this is likely a Murdoch decision to help protect his buddy!
ReplyDeleteOr it's a complete sham that quite frankly no-one outside of the twitter trolls and Grandma Rose even give a shit about.
