415 Media Extra: 49ers PLaying Second Fiddle to SF Giants on KNBR Not So Trivial

THE 49ERS ARE KING, as evidenced by this...

If the Niners make it to the Super Bowl and win...and that's a distinct possibility, there's already a back huddle taking place--a story that you will only read here, and not here, for example.

The team broadcast hierarchy is going over its radio broadcast situation; as you know, the Giants basically RULE their audio roost at KNBR, both the Niners and Giants' flagship stations (including 860 AM, 104 FM and other platforms)

With the Giants' going through a quasi re-build --some say, a freefall-- the 49ers' newfound success on and off the field is the talk of the Bay Area --they rule the airwaves. That's pretty logical but significant on many other fronts. How will the franchise view second-class status on its radio broadcasts?

Publicly, it's not an issue. Underline, publicly.

Privately, behind the scenes it's another story.

The powers that be are quite sensitive to their status. While most of the suits in Santa Clara are more than happy with their KNBR relationship, the idea of playing second fiddle to the Giants while the NFL/49ers/TV Bay Area bonanza has traction in the headquarters at 4949 Centennial Drive Santa Clara.

It may sound trivial. It may look like a battle of egos. It is for you, sure.

But in a multi-BILLION buck business and competing venues it's nothing trivial at all.

VIP people in black suit and tie meeting with other people --even during the holidays? Sensitive? Damn right.

  1. It's surprising that KNBR gets away with outsourcing the first half of the 49er's season so Marty Lurie can reminisce about the grand old game for eight hours. If I were the Niners, I wouldn't be happy.

    1. Good point.
Larry Baer has those wimps wrapped around his little finger.
Jed York should get out of his contract once it expires and find another broadcast partner.
Can you say 95.7 The Game?

  2. Who's doing that radio commerical heard on 98.1 Am, where this guy with a Sports Announcer voice yells "BOB COLE IS OUT COLD!!!"

I think it's for a cough syrup but can't make out anything else.
I LOVE that commercial. Makes me laugh every time I hear it. It reminds me of overly dramatic sports announcers I used to hear on Hockey or Big Time Wrestling.

  3. It doesn't make sense that the 49ers are moved around while the Giants games stay on 680AM. Why make it difficult to find one of 16 regular season games? If we miss a Giants game, so what? There's always another game the next day.

  4. KNBR is going to dick around and lose the 49ers the way they lost the Warriors.

  5. I'd have to think the TV v radio audience split favors football for TV and radio for baseball, enough to keep things the way they are.

Besides Cumulus continues to waste the asset of a clear channel KGO for the 49ers, where the only conflict MIGHT be Cal basketball in Dec - Jan and that seems workable.

  6. I agree with 2:54. The Bleeder dicked around with the Warriors to the tune of forcing them onto the 1050 during the playoffs while the Giants were playing a meaningless mid week games.

  7. The 49ers are still punks who moved to Santa Clara and did nothing about cry baby Kapernick. Boycott football and Nike.

  8. Sadly, money talks in all cases. The Sports Bleeder has an ownership stake in the Giants, so we're stuck with them dicking around the 49ers while we are yawning to the Fat Man and his "Adios Pelota" bouquets.

That piece of shit radio station is all about money. Period. 40 minutes of ads to 20 minutes of what is called "news and content." Really, it's about 10 because the hosts are too busy talking about themselves.

    Off to SiriusXM Radio!

  9. More listen to a regular baseball game on radio than do for football. Football is TV sport. Because of the pace baseball is good radio. Football and basketball aren't as good on radio as baseball.
That said, having the top sports station in this market carrying football (how many knbr's are there now, 3?),even if it means the pre-season and a couple regular season games get broadcast on a sister station is worth it.

    1. Yes, football is a TV sport, but many turn the sound down to listen to the PBP guys. Except with the 49ers and the yutz that's on the air now. A team needs to establish an identity with their flagship station. It doesn't get accomplished by parceling the broadcasts all over the place because of conflicts. As long as The Sports Bleeder owns part of the Giants and carries the 49ers, it's going to be standard operating procedure.

    2. to 11:45
What you say is next to impossible as the delay between radio and TV is between 5 and 12 seconds depending upon your TV provider.

    3. NOT next to impossible, at least where I live. TV signal is ahead of the radio. Just grab the remote and hit pause. Once it's synced, good for the whole game. Sure beats the network announcers, MUCH more informative. Say what you want about Papa and Ryan, but they sure know football and the Niners.

  10. Let's hope Larry Baer throws temper tantrum and storms into KNBR's offices and demands more air time for the Giants.
He will do this by slapping some of those on-air wimps who are his champions, you know, Paulie (I can't speak a word of English) Mac, Mark (The Rat) Willard and rest of the pansies.

  11. More rancor over at KNBR and their favored teams air time?
    We are just lovin it.

  12. The fact of the matter is once the NFL football season starts, most sports fans shift gears. If the Giants were competitive these last 3 plus season's, things MIGHT be different. If the 49ers want change, get rid of Papa!!!!

  13. If I owned the 49ers, I'd be pissed too. The issue is having a station who will air ALL of your games, from the preseason to the postseason. That way you can promote the station as the Voice of the 49ers. KNBR is treating 49ers like they're second class citizens.

    What are the 49ers choices?

    1. Going back to KGO and having them air all their games is possible. But KGO's signal isn't what it once was (transmitter maintenance is long overdue) and the station's overall ratings suck. After A&G, the numbers nosedive. Rich, have you taken a look at an actual book, not the Radio Online Cume numbers? There are many 15-minute segments throughout the day where KGO's listenership is below 500 souls. Your buddy John Rothmann might as well do his show in a closet with a pretend microphone because nobody is listening.

The 49ers would be wise to avoid KGO, even for preseason games. It damages their reputation to be associated with a s***hole station.

    2. The next choice is KCBS, which won't have the Raiders next year. I would think that Entercom would jump at the chance to get the 49ers.

    3. If that doesn't work out, they could buy 860, 1100 or 610, but then they'd get stuck with the job of flipping the station to a sports-talk operation. Probably not worth the money or trouble in a market with 3 KNBRs and The Game. And even if you bought a 50kw signal on AM, some people (like ad buyers) will expect that you will also have an FM signal, so this option starts to get expensive quickly.
