Amazing Things You Never Knew About What Took Place Immediately After Bay Area Big Quake 30 Years Ago Today

QUAKEY-BAKEY

*I think I heard Leslie Brinkley on KGO this morning talking about being on the Bay Bridge during the Loma Prieta quake, 30 years ago today, of course I later heard her on KQED saying the same thing until I heard her again on another AM station about an hour later.

And I assume I will both see and hear her on KGO tonight during the 5, 6 and 11 PM News. Because there's no better way to tell a story, an experience, over again, over again, and over again. Very effective tool. And let's do it again because it needs repeating. Just one more time.

And now, I bet you didn't know this happened:

*David Louie was in his 87th year at KGO the time of the quake 30 years ago today and his colleague, REEEEEEECO, Chacon, in San Jose, stopping by the local downtown Starbucks to ask people, "did you feel it?" In Spanish too!

*Wayne Freedman , where were you at the time of the 7.1 temblor? Wayne was in his garage in Marin fitting his 67th Emmy in the back bench area when the earth shook and ran out front, screaming, "Hey Earth, You SUCK!"

*Darya Folsom, in her infant years at KRON was staring into the mirror right at 5: 04 PM checking out her young winnebagos mumbling, "shit, I look hot!"

*Ronn Owens was on Union Street having his nails manicured and toes done immediately called Mickey Luckoff and said, "Hey Mickey, I need about 10 grand more on my next contract so I can take Jan on the cruise." Luckoff, before hanging up, shouted into the phone, "Fuck You, asshole, Lowenstein!"

*Claudine Wong, beginning her junior year at KTVU was in makeup, about to do a stand-up from the newsroom, coldly walked over to the ED, Butt Bolanskey, at the time, and said, "How do I look?", not smiling of course.

*Mark Thompson, at the KRON weather center: "Shit, my hair locks almost fell out!"

*Aaron Pero, a fresh young lad up in Sacramento at the ABC affiliate was in a corner office screaming and yelling at a female intern.

  2. Amber Lee was at Candlestick working as a production assistant the day of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Julie Haener asks her, "So were people running out of the stadium?" DUH, no, they were just standing there, saying "Get on with the game!" Haener is a fucking idiot.

    1. Was at Candlestick that day. People were not running out of the stadium. Most people initially thought the game would still be played once the power came back on. A lot of people just stayed in the stadium and hung around...watching small portable TVs to get information on what was going on. It was at least 30-45 minutes before SFPD announced via bullhorns that the game was cancelled and fans were asked to leave. Fans walked out normally...no one was running. For a lot of people, particularly if you were in the lower deck, the earthquake was fairly muted at Candlestick (things were a bit different if you were in the upper deck).

  10. What I remember was KGO radio patting itself on the back for the next year about how well they did covering the quake. I hate when people pat themselves for doing their job.

  11. I was an electrician on the double decker sight when the wrecking ball demoed a large section of it. Had to make sure they didn't drop the demo ball on top of the dirt covering the high-voltage lines. We mark them out in make sure they stayed away from them.
