  1. Do you think Will Tran (KRON) is an Asian Walter Cronkite waiting to be discovered? Lamont, Hercules...Strongest City in America.

    1. More like the Asian Ron Burgundy if you really wanna know.

    2. He has a chance to be the next Da Lin!!

  2. In terms of salary vs number of hours on air (reporting/anchoring) who provides the most & least value?

    ReplyDelete
  3. The most value is Dan Ashley of KGO considering his off-air work with charities and ambassador status --least value, that's easy, Darya Folsom hands down.

  4. Are you glad to be blogging again? I really disdain your personal attacks on Ronn, the KTVU evening gang, etc., but must acknowledge that since your return there has been less of it on your part.

    1. Well there's been less but only because there seems less drivel; first off, I try to be honest and that involves honest criticism --if it's harsh, so be it. They're big boys and girls they can take it....If you dislike my "attacks" then maybe I'm not your game. That's OK, it's a free country.

    2. It is possible to dislike Rich's attack on Ronn, and still like his blog most of the time. I don't mind the attacks on Ronn, except I think they go too far and become redundant, however it is Rich's blog, he gets to write what he wants, sometime I ignore, sometimes when I think it is warranted, I write a comment defended Ronn, if I feel Rich really went over the line.

  5. Hi Rich, glad you're back. Did I hear that Disney has taken over a few of Fox's properties such as our local FOX news outlets..like MO2? What exactly did Disney take over from FOX?

    1. Mostly everything --but I don't think you'll notice anything different.

    2. They only got Movie and Production facilities...Not TV stations.

    3. When you start seeing Minnie Mouse doing the news, might be time to start worrying!

    4. Would love to see Minnie Mouse replace Trixie. That way, Ashley & Finney would be officially extended, and the staff would be at least treated like fellow mice, and not trashy rats. Would love to see Circle7 viewers tell the GM & ND to stop playing games and start protecting their best news people, let alone tell Disney if they don't want Tom & Trixie, then remove them ASAP.

  6. What is KGO Kate Larson inside connection? She is terrible and the hand gestures are just annoying. Basically who is her Daddy?

    1. Some guy high up; I agree with your assessment of Larsen, word.

  7. Rich,
Is the flack between Somerville & Ibanez rooted in something personal between Ibanez & another high-profile bay area news personality?

I'll take my answer of the air.

  8. Rich, a few weeks back you had a list of what evening anchors make. What kind of money are the a.m. anchors getting?

  9. Hi Rich,

    Great to have you back.

Have you ever watched Midday Live on KGO 7? Also have your heard any updates about the Ray Taliaferro tragedy? Why does Stan Bunger make his entrance a 5:30 AM?

Keep up the great service you do for the Bay Area.

    1. Midday 7? Please, I'm not much of a NO-LIFE; Ray, haven't heard a thing which is sad but I hope the cops are on this...Thanks for the kind words.

  10. The A's have Khris Davis locked up through next season. Do you think they will make a serious offer to resign him, or extend his contract? And do you think that Ken Korach will ever consider leaving the A's booth, for a higher-profile gig?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think Ken likes the A's; loves the Bay Area and I think he's set...I think the A's will try to resign KD, they'd be foolish not to.

  11. Back in the 90s I listened to KGO. I remember the signal being crisp and clear. Now it sounds week, and almost staticy. did they lose signal strength over the years? are radios worse? why has sound quality gone down?

    1. I haven't noticed --they still have that huge tower at the Dumbarton Bridge.

      Delete
    2. Yes, the signal HAS degraded: A, because more stuff has been built on what used to be open bay land, blocking the signal propagation, and B) there are buried metal radial lines in the marsh radiating out from the base of the tower. Those are also important for signal propagation. I don't think anyone has even looked at those since ABC sold the property. If they did, it wasn't for maintenance, it was for an appraisal so they could get a loan.

    3. I remember hearing from tech people (when I worked there) that the station was running at 1/2 power at the transmitter site because one of the power transformers or something of the like had burned out and they didn't have the dough to buy a replacement. Doubt it if it was ever replaced, especially after filing bankruptcy.

There are no special temp authorizations in KGO's FCC filings; it's still at full power. The poster forgot the issue that exists everywhere, RF noise pollution. Everything from street lamps to WiFi to your kitchen microwave contributes to it, eroding AM signals terribly.

    5. Not to mention that in the 90s very few people had cellphones. Now everyone has at least one pinging at all times. Add all the cars with Bluetooth and the cell towers everywhere. All over-the-air stations have degraded with the emergence of cell phones. In 1983 I could hear KFI in LA (and XTRA "The Mighty 690" in Tijuana) in Idaho Falls, ID at night. Chances are that's no longer possible...

  15. Not a question, but so glad you are back, Rich.

  16. Longt-time listener...first time caller (I HATE it when talk-show callers say this. WHO GIVES A DAMN?? LOL!)

It's been awhile since the "backpack VJ" concept has been discussed here.
    A two--part question:
Is KRON still committed to it?
    What about the other stations?

    1. Eventually ALL the stations are going that way because it's CHEAPER and Cheap is sign of the times.

    2. Yes, KRON is still doing it. Haven't you noticed all their deer-in-the-headlights reporters who look to be about 24 and were probably pulling shots at Starbucks last month?

    2. I think the sun has set on his radio career. He should just live with his past reputation instead of doing a Walter Cronkite and coming back for one last time and being seen as having become a simpleton and a fool.

  20. Hey Rich! I'm wondering what your take is on Bill Martin on KTVU. Have you watched his weather segments lately? He is just not himself. Strangely detached and disinterested, kind of just bumps his way through the forecast with a whatever kind of attitude. And there is no banter between him and the anchors after his segment is over -- just silence, resulting in a glaringly awkward transition back to the news. I'm wondering if you have any insight you can share.

  21. My second question, have you noticed that the past few weeks or so, Damon Bruce has had a co-host host his show with him? Yeah, having Matt Kolsky on the show adds another viewpoint to Damon's discussions and he can have someone else to converse with him and Gianna (one of the women who do updates on 95.7, but is a key person on Damon's show), but I thought Damon's show was fine the way it was though, with all due respect to Kolsky. I wonder if they will eventually pair him up with Damon. Kolsky was hosting the 5-6 AM weekday show. If I was him, I'd rather be on the air from 3-7 PM instead of 5-6 AM. LOL.

Also, another part to this question, why is 95.7 giving Ray Ratto an opportunity? Yeah, he comes on 95.7 every now and then and fills in, but he doesn't fit any of these shows, and he kind of kills the mood with his schtick. Ray Ratto should probably retire at this point. I'm sorry.

  22. I work at the TV station in L.A. where Mark Thompson used to work, and the word around here is that he does his KGO show from his home here in L.A. (Brentwood) True?

  23. Whatever happened to the KRON evening news anchor, forgot his name, who is pretty difficult to watch? The anchor replaced by Ken Wayne.
