Saturday Rundown: Deanno/PIX News-Weather Hybrid Runs into Money Conflict (Still); Pat Thurston Gets Better with Age on KGO Radio; Chip Franklin and Nikki Medoro ReBoot Sounds Better; Kate Larsen Still Embarrassing on Circle7

*It continues to be something on the to-do list: KPIX brass, in its attempt to try something new and make its news content seem alive and not morose, continues to meet with weatherman, Paul Deanno, about the idea of Deanno doing both weather and news. Hybrid anchoring. I like it but Deanno and PIX are stuck in neutral because of money. Deanno wants more. I agree. Better yet, KPIX, why not just make him a fulltime news reader and let someone else do weather. I suspect that Deanno would relish that promotion.

*Yes, I too agree Pat Thurston is a bit too far left for me but her overall performance as a talk-radio host far outweighs her political leanings. In order to develop an audience and make for interesting conversation, Thurston has vastly improved her on-air style by eliciting good calls, interviewing pretty good guests and commanding the airwaves with strong monologues, something she has lacked in recent years. I remember listening to her on KGO on various Saturday nights where the topics weren't as pithy as one would like and Thurston's railings seemed out of place. She's much better and more lucid if a bit limited on political bent.

Nikki Medoro
*I've had a change of heart on Chip Franklin, the afternoon KGO talker, (he was out most of this week battling the flu); Franklin's show is a lot more interesting and not as off-the-rails as has been the case in recent years. Most of you know I consistently ragged on Franklin's frenzy of topics that sounded irritating and in vast disarray --especially when he and sidekick, Nikki Medoro, would go from one topic every two minutes to another and it sounded utterly crappy. No rhyme or reason which was largely due to the past regime wanting the dreaded "7F" format to emerge. It never worked and was blessedly, thrown out to pasture. Franklin has a much more crisp format and Medoro works off his topic indicator more smoothly. There's a much better flow and the two have developed a chemistry that works. It's not great but it's a heck of a lot better than in years past.

Kate Larsen
*Kate Larsen continues to be an embarrassing mockery at KGO-TV. She simply doesn't have any credibility and her on-air style is replete with consistent gaffs and too many "uh" this and that. Larsen got the gig through family channels (haven't we seen this before) and her buffoonery is the talk of the KGO --ABC7 newsroom. At the very least, she needs a chill pill.

*It's raining again outside --I didn't know we lived in Seattle.

  1. You posts since you decide to come back has been much better, more balanced. Should help with donation. I will donate as soon as l get my computer back from the Geek Squad. Also liked your promised not to make fun of housewives in Concord, hope not only Concord, but all demographics.

  2. Speaking of KGO, any way they can dump that odd "flying car" show on Saturday mornings? And who in the world is the woman with the 10 yr old voice that occasionally chimes in?

  3. Glad you are back, Rich. Keep it up and donation made. Everybody who reads this blog kick in a few bucks this weekend. I am sure the positive changes made this past week at KGO were made in part because of the comments here as no doubt they are read.

  4. The KPIX/CBS thing is all about getting more out of workers for less. Deanno is almost as dull as Martin and Bastida combined. CBS is soon going to start offering buyouts to long time, highly paid employees. They would love a single employee doing two jobs instead of one. That's all this is about.

    1. Thank you for a thoroughly incisive evaluation of the situation. If they could get paid for blood donations by employees, management would take it. Hackney and Watts' experience with double duty at KPIX should be a lesson for everyone,

    1. At last! Giving Pat Thurston & John Rothman their own shows is the best thing KGO has done in years. I can now tune in on weekdays, not just on weekend evenings. And if Chip Franklin has really improved (i.e. dumped the jokey adolescent fixation on body secretions) I might even give him another try.
Now all KGO needs to do is get rid of the appalling "Chef" Ryan on Saturdays and the even worse Armstrong & Getty.

  6. Dr. Drew is gone come Monday. Pat Thurston is on 12 to 3 p.m. They could do news in the morning like they use to or give Ronn an hour 9 to 10 a.m.

  7. So very glad to hear that its raining OUTSIDE: I'd think if it were raining INSIDE, that would be something worth reporting.

  8. chip got better once they dumped the other woman, heather, who was only supposed to do traffic, but stayed to chime in on everything else. and two other things helped, they stopped booking so many other comics and the best part was dumping that ridiculous news/fake news "game" with stupid listeners calling in and people doing lame impressions, it was god awful and pathetic...

    1. Totally agree. That stupid "game" they played and especially the crappy impressions was gawd awful, I turned his whole show off. Much better now and will tune in sometimes. Nicki by herself isn't bad either.

  9. Didn't just love the way CBS played out the R Kelley extravaganza. CBS, this is what you do when your ratings suck? Interview a thug who calls himself a singer by a woman who's only claim to fame is that she's friends with Oprah. Really?

  10. Has anyone pointed out here that SJ Mercury News columnist John Horgan recently published this breaking news:

"Bay Area media types must be breathing a quiet sigh of relief these days. Rich Lieberman’s 415 Media blog has been shut down. It went dark late last month. The online exercise took nonstop, critical aim at local radio/TV personalities and management folks without fear or favor. To note that Lieberman was angry and acerbic would be the understatement of the year. He indicated that the reason for the site’s demise was simple: money, or the distinct lack of it."

Horgan must have deleted his bookmark and never looked back.

  11. I'm very glad you're back, Rich. I hope you don't mind if I make a couple of suggestions: 1) remind people after a year that they donated and ask for another year. I forget to renew. 2) can you make people have user names? There are too many anonymous commenters, I'd like to see more of a known community building here. I have no comment on your content, because you are the expert there!
