Rothmann, Thurston Loyalty Pays Off (Finally) in New KGO Radio Gigs

WELL, ABOUT TIME

KGO Radio, in announcing its morning, midday, and evening line-up reshuffle, finally added longtime hosts, John Rothmann and Pat Thurston (12- 3 PM and Rothmann, 6-9 PM)

Along with new morning guy, Mark Thompson, KGO suddenly has a pulse and Cumulus, after years and years of dubious experiments, is suddenly recharging its 810 AM 50K-watt news talk powerhouse, albeit in the fractured universe called AM Radio. It's not perfect but it's a good start.

In light of the political climate called "The daily President Donald Trump" it is highly logical that KGO, notably, PD, Lee Hammer, found the gumption to get political guru, Rothmann on the air to gauge the machinations of Trump and his frequent news-making items and policy. Trump is a daily laundry box of news-talk zeitgeist; not having someone on the air to talk politics, especially in this Bay Area, was almost illegal. Rothmann is a center-left talker but has enough savvy and objectivity to fry the fish both ways. He'll be good at night and his callers skew educated and enlightened. It should make for entertaining radio.

Thurston has a good mix of present-day politics and pop culture, well versed in almost all talk-radio minutiae and an ability to mix and match, she's in her element at the noon hour. She's also popular with women and can opine on certain family, lifestyle issues.

The reshuffle isn't nirvana; it won't single-handily catapult KGO to its familiar top-10 but it gives it hope and an air of fresh AM relevance --something it has needed for almost a decade.

  1. Finally a few positive post. Like others makes me want to donate (give me a few days). Angie Curie (not sure of spelling) is filling in for Chip, Niki Medora was in the other day, both are good fill in hosts, perhaps they could do a week end show?

  2. Loyalty...or did anyone else really even want her?

    1. @4pm...local talk radio is pretty much dead, especially fact based liberal shows.. Still have many syndicated Conservative talkies around but their best days are behind him. How can you take these nuts seriously if they never criticize Trump and the GOP with their evil, lying, racist ways?

    2. You lost me when you mentioned fact based liberal show. If you believe that I have oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

    3. I think 7:10 was being a bit sarcastic when he said fact based liberal show. As for fact based conservative show l don't think so. I do believe Tom Sullivan and Michael Medved (when he was on in this area) was not only pretty much fact based and fair. Hannity, are you kidding, and when l use to listen to Brian Sussmann he was skewing the fact or outright lying on a regular basis. Having said that talk show host voice their opinion and sometime listeners have problems seeing the difference between facts and opinion. As for Sussmann and Hannity they both pushed the theory that Seth Rich murder was some sinister plot by democrats or more precisely Hillary's campaign, although no such connection was found. Seth Rich family asked Hannity to stop using their son's name on his show.

    4. We criticize President Trump for not funding a border barrier sooner, or GOPe traitors like Ryan and McConnell. Unfounded slurs like racism lose you legitimacy.

  3. I wish they would have placed Rothmann from 7 to 10 instead of 6 to 9. However its a start. I may have to dial in again at KGO.

  4. Pat has her following, l like her, some times she is a little too left for me. John is my favorite, but l will be listening. Talking about left or right there are enough far right hosts, those of you who don't like her can listen to Hannity, Limbaugh, and Sussman. Since 860 am replaced Michael Medved with Sebastian. Gorka there is hardly any middle of the road reasonable conservative hosts, Tom Sullivan 1530 am, Sacramento is the only one l can find in this area

  5. I am looking forward to listening to KGO again. I gave up after hearing one to many stories from Ethan Bearman about the wonders of coconut flour.

John Rothman has always been one of my favorite hosts. He comes across as incredibly knowledgeable, but willing to listen to and dialogue with a view he might oppose. It seems like that is needed now more than ever.

  6. Please just remove chip Franklin ASAP

    1. Chip hit a jackpot when they gave him a contract; if they fired him they'd have to pay out. So he remains. Not sure how he got a contract w/ Cumulus; that's rare.

  7. Once Again Cumulus Shuffles the same "HAND" Loyalty? Rothmann just hung around till they hired him back...Pat? Where is she gonna go?

    1. Two hosts in their mid to late 60's.

I never understood why people take the words of these radio hosts as gospel while at the same time saying "oh don't worry about what Grandma says, she's just old".

    2. I don't think we take it as gospel, but I find them as well as many callers intersting, even callers l disagree with. As for age many hosts are in their sixties and seventies. Limbaugh, Savage,Tom Sullivan. Hannity in his mid fifties is one of the younger ones.

  10. What about Brian Copeland, is he still Knock, Knock Knockin' on KGO's door? Or did somebody decide to just write a check, and may everything all better again?

    1. Pat and John waited patiently after there shows were canceled. Copie OTOH chose to play the race card and sued KGO. Too bad for the shameless race-war-monger as he surely would have been hired.

Oh well, that's how the Oreo cookie crumbles.

    2. Remember that Copie had a full-time slot on Cumulus' KGO for a while. He wasn't that good, and his ratings reflected it. Other stuff happened. He waited a year (just under so as to make the deadline) before he filed suit. Speculation as to whether he would have been re-hired had he not sued is nebulous; perhaps a 50-50 shot. Personally I'd bet "no."

  11. Haven't listened to KGO in several years. With these announcements, I was wondering who would take the 3 - 6pm time slot? But someone mentioned Chip Franklin, and oh yeah....I think I recall that was his spot. Ugh. Really too bad. About time Rothmann and Thurston are back permanently.

  13. When they had the first shakeup i started listing to satellite radio... I might go back to listen to John but it's a shame what Cumlulus did to a great station!

  14. John? Good choice. Thursten not so much. I like her when she stays away from her trump rants, too much hatred and closed minded for an intelligent conversation not to mention her shutting anyone down with her hesteical "I know better than you" attitude.

BUT, her other topics are very interesting with an open minded and a very good discussion. I give her a 5/10

    1. @741..what is there good to like about Trump? The guy is an ignorant, lying fraudster. And calling Pat close-minded is such BS where as almost all the right wing talkes won't have opposing view callers or callers at all (A & G)

  15. Sebastian Gorka hasn't been on for two weeks it's A's baseball/talk or some consumer guy.

  16. That is a good thing. I use to listen to Michael MedMed at times, althoughs I'm more liberal than conservative. l found him fair and he took calls that disagreed with him. I think replace him with Sebastian Gorka was a bad move. Last thing we need is another one sided Trumpster. Besides can't stand his voice and delivery.

  17. The only time I ever turn on KGO-810 AM is to listen to Pat Thurston, and I just heard the news. I am very excited to hear that Pat and John will be back on on weekdays. My only problem now is to figure out what I'm going to do with my radio presets because my Sirius/XM took over in 2011 when KGO committed its mistakes. I'll be OK though.... I'll figure it out.
