415 MEDIA is suspending its account indefinitely.Which is to say while I'd love to be up and running, I simply cannot be.
You know the reason.
I'm not going to ask you again for donations and subscriptions. Been down that road before. You have made your decision --and regrettably, so have I.
I thought the Bay Area could afford a daily media blog that broke news (sometimes) and published scoops (sometimes) --I was wrong.
I thought you all wanted someone to make the Cumulus warts accountable and be your defacto ombudsman --I was wrong. Cumulus needs to be taken to task but now they are not. Oh well.
I am not going to "whine anymore" as some of you have opined. That's fine. Until you need a little whining and one day you will.
I have said "account suspended indefinitely" because I hope one day I'll be back, just not now. Who knows about the future. Maybe you'll miss me and wish I was back and had never left. (Wink)
Those of you that have repeatedly made donations and subscribed I thank you all so much. And even those that did not, thanks for reading. Too bad we're here at this moment but that's life. I can deal with it, there's far more important things to consider. Nobody died.

DeleteAs for the blog, it probably would've been nice to have posts appear instantly instead of waiting to be approved, but I have a feeling if it was that way it'd be a total mess, especially with spammers posting Viagra ads.

DeleteHaving been personally victimized by several local news organizations and their completely unwarranted intrusion into my privacy, I found it refreshing that the crude, crass, and tormented culture that exists in Bay Area media was given a thorough airing here on this blog. And, not surprisingly, that air really reeked!
How do you people like it when the shoe is on the other foot. Looks like from you complaining comments here, you simply can't stand being put under a microscope.
Well, nobody else likes it either, especially when you impose RATS (Remote Access Software) on the internet activity of ordinary citizens minding their own business, living their own lives, and then continue to torment them night and day assaulting them with intrusive, harassing, and aggravating disruption of their every moment online.
Thank you Mr. Lieberman for opening the door to allow the rest of us to peer into the churning bowels of hell that is local television and radio. I will never look at these people as human, ever again. They certainly don't afford the rest of us that common courtesy.
I also had to deal with news peeps a couple of times. They can get relentless, and this was long ago. I can't imagine how bad it is now.
DeleteActually, somebody did die. Robin Williams took his life after being mercilessly tormented by the local news media with intrusions into his privacy, specifically ABC7, using RAT software. For a fact, Dan Ashley< Larry Beil, and Ama Daetz were privy to information on private citizens obtained in this manner, They should not go unpunished.

I get that a lot of them suck and deserve to be criticized. But it got really old after awhile. Also too every time a long time media personality left the air, you chose to ignore it saying it was "too trivial to mention." I find myself agreeing with A's World's post too. So if you're gone forever, I wish you good luck. I suspect however you'll be back.

Rich, you had to do what you had to do. I do believe losing a parent doesn't help at all. Probably was a very tough decision to suspend the site for now and the advertising market fallen to the bottom didn't help.
ReplyDeleteAlthough some people can grieve and still try to keep things going, for some it's like the world ended. That happened to a long time friend who grieved about his mom for many many years before he could live close to a normal life again.
In that case Lieberman shouldn't have routinely mocked other people facing personal challenges of their own. Sadly, he lacked any self-awareness. Nothing but jealousy and resentment.
DeleteSomeone doesn't just go on the offensive for no reason. They have usually first been abused, treated unfairly, or suffered some other gross personal affront from those they attack. I don't know if that is the case to explain Rich's personal gripes with many in the media, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. Many of them go out of their way to make life difficult for people minding their own business and doing the best they can to get by in this life.

I'm sure you are aware of Don Barrett's laradio.com and Robert Feder in Chicago. Both do an excellent job of media reporting. If you do return, why not do something similar?
I too have contributed in the past. This despite that several of my very reasonable comments were not posted, it would usually be comments defending Ronn or Brian Copeland, I would always be careful of not being too critical of Rich, but stick to my point about Ronn or Brian. However, it seems that has gotten better, as I had several of these comments posted lately. One other point, why use the term "housewife in Walnut Creek or Concord" in a negative way? I live in Concord, and it does not make me anxious to contribute, when I read a comment like that. There are well educated and intelligent people (housewives)in those cities (like Step Curry's wife in WC) as well as in Fresno. Why even make it about demographics? Does not seem to serve any point in a positive way.

Radio and television personalities, on both sides of the camera, are public figures and since they depend on viewing, they deserve to be held to account.

DeleteA guy decides to start writing and publishing a blog, which is free for all to read, knowing at the beginning what the costs would be. Later, when he isn't able to persuade advertisers to help, he turns to the readers to donate money to keep his project afloat. In any other business, if the product doesn't sell, the business goes belly-up, without all the whining and crying to donate money to help out the business. You either improve the product or get out.
DeleteYou have a point to a certain degree. However, I don't mind that Rich ask for money, I believe many that write blogs probably exist on some form of donations. I follow another blog daily, Dan Woog, he blogs from Westport Ct, where I lived for 2 years when I was in my early twenties, he often writes about people and places that I know or remember (even wrote a blog about me an my experience as an au pair from Denmark coming to the US). His website says donations are appreciated, but that is it. He has also written books, does speeches and lectures, and do or use to coach soccer. He writes a fairly lengthy blog every day, on many different subjects and human interest stories. Perhaps it is hard to make a full time living on writing a blog, especially in an expensive area like the Bay Area.

The Three Stooges there totally misread and misconstrued what I wrote. I stand by it. I loved reading this column but Rich's constant attacks on those on the other side of the aisle as well as the President were off-putting and the primary reason why I didn't send him a donation. I honestly felt he didn't want my dirty Republican money. But again, I wish Rich the best and hope he decides to come back.

I care how they sound on the air, can they hold my attention, do I learn something, is the subject interesting etc. I have a feeling I'm not alone in feeling that way. DeleteI found this blog when KGO fired all it's successful host, and went almost all news. I have enjoyed many of Rich's blog's about KGO and KSFO. I don't watch local TV and I'm not into sports. I'm interested in a good talk radio show host, I don't care about their personal life, and Rich, to his credit did some excellent blog's, about several hosts. I don't have a curiosity about dead celebrities, I don't have to I remember very well when they were an item. All I'm saying is I don't care about the personal life of a TV or radio host. I came here because despite my critic of Rich and his column's he has written many blogs that I enjoyed, which did not have anything to do with his personal life, but only his professional performance.

I also feel that people's personal is personal. You did skip KQED's Newsroom along with locally produced stories i.e Backroads type newscast. Ever since then, I've enjoyed a peak inside the (apparently sordid) world of TV and radio news. Yes, Rich sometimes delved into the more personal aspect of their lives, but only to help paint the picture of all the personalities and how "real" or "fake" they were on screen. He always put in a disclaimer that this was his opinion, so it's not like he was out to do character assassination. I found his content refreshing and forthright.

I didn't know Bob Brinker had retired, I would only listen now and then, but he had a very loyal following, and what about 860 AM replacing Michael Medved with Sebastian Gorka, bad move as far as I'm concerned. Would have like a blog on that and comments from reader what their thoughs were. That to me is more interesting than Ronn's manicure, and keep calling Brian Copeland a one trick pony, for the umpteen time, which he was not. I mention radio, because I don't watch local TV and I'm not a sports fan, but it seems those 2 venues might also have personality or news that has been neglected. Constant negativity gets you down. As someone else wrote the constant bashing of certain personality got stale. Certainly Rich can write negative blogs about the state of radio and tv in the Bay Area, but why not balance it out with something more positive. I listen to radio, don't watch local TV nor am I interested in sports. However, there are several shows Rich never wrote about, John Batchelor, Bob Brinker (he retired last fall). Rich wrote something positive about Michael Medved, but never wrote anything about Medved being replaced with Sebastian Gorka, bad move as far as I'm concerned. Rich wrote several very positive blogs about John Rothmann, all of sudden of late, Rothmann also got on the sh... list. That kind of did it for me, what changed Rothmann has not changed, he is a class act, treat every caller with respect, take calls from people who disagree with him, is extremey knowledgeable about current affairs and politics. Usually when Rich wrote about TV and radio personalities from the past he was very positive, granted the were better than most of todays personalities (Van Amburg Dave MCallhattan Gene Burns) perhaps it reflects how Rich feels about his life. The past was better than the now. However, when one is in business it is sometimes best to leave certain personal feelings out of it,
DeleteAll these comments has some very constructive ideas, if Rich were to incorporate some of them into his blogs, I think he could come back and probably get more donations, or even have people that really wanted to read his blog subscribe, but the blog is probably better when a more diverse group read it and then write comments.

Not only am I going to miss the 415 Media, I'm also going to miss all the people who have posted/commented during the years I have been coming to this site, it's been a pleasure!
ReplyDeleteI have always considered the 415 Media as the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of our local Media. Some of Rich's posts were good, some bad and some ugly. Same with the people postings, some were good, some were bad, some ugly...I enjoyed them all!
I have often wondered how successful Clint Eastwood's film would have been if it had been called, "The Good."
Time to get on the train and travel down the line, perhaps I can find another 415 Media some where. My ticket is stamped, "destination unknown."
Never make a life changing or life altering decision when you are mad, pissed, tired, sick, fed up or in what I call, "The World Sucks" zone. Your "Hell On Earth" today could be "Heaven On Earth" 30 days from now.
Will we all meet again...I certainly hope so.
Since moving away from the Bay Area, where else am I going to find out what Darya's boobs are up to (or down to...)?

Mixed feelings for me. I contributed to Rich's blog several times. Appreciated the local media news he shared. But then there was the personal attacks, the never ending Ronn Owens flogging etc. that lead me away for weeks. Wish you well. Your blog will be missed..
ReplyDeleteSame here, I contributed, despite my income is a retail salary and social security, does not leave a lot of extra money in this area, even though I live in Concord. I too got tired of the Ronn and Brian Copeland bashing, I enjoyed Brian's show, and do not think he was a one trick pony at all. Having said that Rich did write some great blogs, and I always enjoyed reading them and the comments, so if he does not come back I'll miss this forum. Seems like of late his blogs got more and more negative and personal. Several commenters here has made suggestions, I think if Rich is capable of a little introspection, and open to others opinion, his blog could come back stronger and more interesting. I certainly will look for it and if I see a few changes and my income allows it, I will contribute. I have had my own business and also been self employed (not exactly the same) running a business is a little like to quote Woody Allen, although he talked about relationships, "it's like a shark if it does not keep moving i.e. improving and changing it will die.

A damn shame this had to happen. Dickie Lieberman got on some rants and maybe they were prolonged, but hey it's his blog. Now we're going to be stuck with Bennie Fong, for whom the pronoun "I" was created. His Sunday "Radio Waves" is akin to being on a ship in choppy seas. In short, there's no one to be a "watchdog" of sorts for the local media. A shame. We'll see if you're back. If so, great. If not, hey you gotta eat too. Meanwhile, graphics will continue to be misspelled on TV, KCBS will repeat the same stories for three consecutive hours, Fox2 will increase its spying of employees and the Chronicle will change its name to Comical as their paper gets smaller and the content gets lighter. Wonder how the media is in Casper, Wyoming?
