In spite of his past GaryIsms, there's word on the street that PIX sports second banana, Vern Glenn, might be in the captain's seat next year.
And yes, it's all about the money.
Veteran Dennis O'Donnell is said to be a goner --might be a gonner because he makes too much money and isn't that big a draw anymore. At least that's the thinking--doesn't mean it's going to happen but this much is known: CBS doesn't want to pay $300K a year to its sports maven in San Francisco. O'Donnell holds down the fort at the gulch at 855 Battery but maybe not for long.
Enter Vern Glenn. Cheaper. Just as much, if not more, popularity.
Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell.
300k to report sports? What I'm I missing here? Why are any of these news personalities being paid so much? Their just reading a monitor.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should of gone into TV vs. what your doing for a living. If you don't ask, you don't get. If at the time of the contract negotiations the company did not want to pay the talent what they were asking, they wouldn't have.

DeleteVern Glenn's presentation is awful. I can't listen to him and even my wife who pays no attention to sports news turns the channel when she hears him.

DeleteIf Vern Glenn appears on KPIX any more than he already does, I will quit watching their newscasts. Let a South Bend station pick him up so he can feed that frenzied fan base instead.

Sports on local news is a DYING (if not DEAD) issue. With the influence of all the sports channels, ESPN, NBCSN, etc - no one really watches the news for sports. All 2 minutes of it - if that.......

Totally agree as well regarding Vern's presentation. For what it's worth, his straight read of sports without the histrionics is worth keeping around, because he comes across as friendly and knowledgeable. Now he's too much like Radnich, which is really obnoxious. My wife and I both change the channel when he's on.

Dennis O'Donnell need to go to a speech therapist because he is speaking around his new dental work. He sounds like someone with new dentures.
