Four Bay Area Women Anchors I'd Like To Critique: Wang; Daetz; Haener and Moore

Janelle Wang
I WISH I COULD LIKE Janelle Wang. I'm sure over a glass of wine and cheese crackers, we'd be just a hoot. I can't relate to Wang's demeanor as a news anchor on NBC Bay Area (KNTV) She comes across as cold and benign --a virtual ghost with no passion, no personality, no spirit. She needs a few things; maybe trim the hair a bit; a little less lipstick and more smiling. For starters. Then we'll reexamine later on.

*Ama Daetz is wonderful to observe. Unfortunately, sheer beauty isn't enough for the KGO-TV anchor. I've been hot and cold with Madame Daetz. She is a decent news reader but passionless --there's no energy there and Ama comes off like a stiff cinnamon twist. She should have better news acumen too because I'm not seeing it anymore.

*Julie Haener used to be a model KTVU anchor; I always marveled at her ability to work well and not come across as the dumb blond down the street you see shopping at the local Macys. Lately, Haener wants to become a femme fatale. The provocateur who is hellbent on enforcement at any cost. A real rabble rouser. Tone it down, Countess Haener. There is nothing more displeasing than a brutish news reader. And please, less make-up, Julie. You ever heard of natural beauty? Maybe too, like Wang, cut the hair. Try a few curls and be more human. You're beginning to look like a Mary Kay cosmetics rep.

*Pam Moore is beginning to suffer the effect of too many years at KRON. She can still read the teleprompter but has lost her personality and vigor. She seems out of touch, stern, sort of baseless. There's not a lot of passion; in fact, visually a great deal of anger and resentment. Madame Moore, be relaxed and have fun. It beats working, that TV gig of yours.

  1. Haener and Wang will survive, but Moore is on life support - way past her prime, and living through hell at KRON. Daetz is a sad case. Somewhere along the line she lost all ambition, and its obvious. Just look at her totally dumpy appearance - she doesn't give a rip. Maybe its working with Sze's constant negativity and bullying, but its obvious. I'd like to see your critiques of Folsom, Sze, & Laura Garcia. Two diva nightmares(on their way out)and a star...

    When was this?

    I worked with her when I was there and she was relatively new, having replaced Leslie G on weekends. Even then the consensus among writers and editors was you could shine a flashlight in one ear and see light on the opposite wall. She's all about her career and her cute house in Diablo.

  3. Wang: Funny, but every time I've seen her on the news she's smiling...then again I don't watch much TV news lately;
    Daetz: Again, haven't seen her on the news since she came back from maternity leave, but maybe things have changed. Having kids changes a person, some more than others. Don't be surprised - assuming your critique is correct - if she goes all Corral on us and decides to hang it up one night out of the blue;
    Haener: Has always been consistent to me, doesn't add oomph to a newscast but doesn't detract from it either. Doesn't even matter who she's paired with, it's pretty much the same. Fox must love that;
    Moore: I'd give her a bit of a break; she's been working at KRON since the Reagan years and has seen (and presumably felt) a lot of sh!t go down, and at this stage even she may be souring on Gary (I heard they were pretty close once) and given that KRON's been on life support for several years now I'm sure she feels this is her last gig before she retires and is just squeezing the KRON lemon to get as much juice as possible before it all goes south. Too bad, too; she deserves a better sendoff that KRON fading to black...

  4. Crescent Park has a good point about motherhood changing Daetz some through a decreasing energy level. But she's too much of a pro to go Corral on KGO; as long as she works great with Ashley, all is good. Now if any Iger/Disney orders to remove Trixie are not only ignored, but countered with more power, then she might leave.

  5. First thing I thought of on Daetz is she's back from a long maternity leave, and of course her priorities have changed. She still has a megawatt smile and works well with her co-workers.

  6. You look at these folks with a different lens than I, and obviously know the backend of the workplaces that the everyday viewer does not...every workplace has climbers,backstabbers, gossipmongers, cheaters, ethically challenged people, which is different than their work face that they get pAid to have

      No he doesn't. Half the stuff he says (Aguirre is going away; Darya and Pero are close to getting fired) he makes up; occasionally something happens that vaguely resembles what he said a year or two ago and he takes credit for it as "insider info." (What company doesn't shake up its management team once in a while?) The rest of what he says is just disgruntled gripes—every workplace has them—who gossip to him anonymously. Water cooler talk.

  8. Moore just isn't the same since Radnich left. Not as much spunk as Mary Tyler Moore might have said (before she passed).
