Sure, Great Anchors But Savvy Reporters in the Field Too; KGO's Ashley; KRON/KNTV's Sinkovitz Grunt Work Makes For Instant Cred; Amburg/Mcelhatton/Wilson Territory; Friday Shop Talk

Dan Ashley
YEARS AGO
an industry friend told me something that I already knew: the very best TV News anchors spent quite a bit of time reporting in the field; not only did it establish them as real journalists it qualified them more than mere talking heads in front of a teleprompter who possess very little news acumen. I mean, it's very easy to read news but it takes more moxie to actually be there and experience it firsthand ...

THIS IS WHY I LIKE Dan Ashley over at KGO-TV, who as good an anchor he is, has quite a bit of time in the field reporting on the news he broadcasts; ditto, Tom Sinkovitz, late of KRON and NBC Bay Area, who did a lot of grunt work in the field back east before coming to the Bay Area and standing out as a terrific news anchor --Sinkovitz, like Ashley, command both industry and viewer respect who appreciate those who earned their stripes and add both instant credibility and news acumen. I'm a sucker for those that are real-deal individuals as opposed to wind-up dolls who not only don't know what they're broadcasting but try to fool the viewership with their pretty boy/girl looks. It's a tactic that most savvy viewers (in the Bay Area) regard as gimmicky and profoundly disingenuous.

Ashley seems genuine and news moxie. Sinkovitz, (darn, I wish he was still on the air full time) is one of my all-time favorite Bay Area TV News anchors.

I'd place him and Ashley in the same company with Van Amburg, Dave Mcelhatton, Pete Wilson and Dennis Richmond. Evan White too

All great anchors but who got their reputations established as reporters first, working in the field.

It's something, unfortunately, lacking in today's news environment.

Not entirely surprising.

  1. I just don't get the pro-Ashley stuff. He preens, he has an on-going love affair with the camera and his segues between stories are as insightful as tree bark. He's a total dork.

  2. Pete Wilson, master of the endless audible faux sigh, was in love with himself.

  3. What a silly take on Ashley-- he's among the best in town and has been for decades. Met him once-- was very nice.

  4. Unfortunately, very few of them aren't.

  5. EVAN WHITE.

Can we get an update on him? Remember something about raising his grandkids, owning a lot of property in SF. What are the details - who has seen him lately? What are his opinions of today's affairs?

Great journalist. Would love to hear his point of view.

  6. I always thought that Pete Wilson did a better job with his field reporting than he anchor work. Ashley has a way of taking whoever he works with, to take their talent to the next level.
