Why KTVU Needs Ibanez; Face of Station Status Just Like Wayne Walker at 'PIX; The Real Reason Jessica Aguirre Left KGO; 'Armstrong & Getty' Fake Cackle Adds More Embarrassment; Insensitive KCBS 'Interview'; Paul Deannu and Sandhya Patel: 1 and 1A Best Weather Folks in Bay Area; Friday 415 Media Brunch

Image result for mark ibanez KTVU should have a contract extension drafted immediately, with a moderate raise, for its multi-decade veteran sports anchor, Mark Ibanez. Ibanez is more than just the best reader of sports news on the local screen, he's become one of the faces of the station, just like Frank Somerville and Julie Haener.

When Wayne Walker joined KPIX in the 70's he had a great run and eventually shared a popular status alongside Dave McElhatton and Wendy Tokuda. Joel Bartlett too.

Image result for dave mcelhatton kpixGary Radnich, although he has slackened off, continues to be the face of KRON even if his star power has been marginalized and image diminished. Nevertheless, he still garners significant relevance and his radio show on KNBR still moves the needle. I'm critical but facts are facts.

Ibanez is the best sports copy writer in the market. He works hard and still attends most of the games. He is beloved by most people, including both women and men. He's also a nice guy both on and off the screen, a Bay Area native (Marin) to boot and has earned the respect of his peers. 40 years at one station is a long time let alone the rough and tumble, doggie-dog world of local TV News. Ibanez began at KTVU in 1979 and worked under Gary Park, his mentor.

KTVU management, under the Fox iteration, has altered its brand and tweaked its newscast style; not all positive in my opinion, but it is still king of the hill, top of the list with a roster full of quality anchors. Not like the old days of course but still significant. Part of that is its relatively stable core of men and women on the anchor desk. The "10 O'clock News" is still the #1-rated newscast in the Bay Area.

Ibanez is a part of that vaunted franchise and deserves another three or four years to wind up his career. If I'm KTVU I'd have this transaction done --it's not only good community relations, it's good business.

Image result for allie rasmus*This might be worth munching on: wanna know the real reason Jessica Aguirre left KGO years ago? Think about a certain sports guy who also does news. Oh my!

*Still, a classy, smart, cool woman who lights up the screen every time she's on: Allie Rasmus. Yes, I'm a fan.

*The Branson, Missouri bozos in the morning on KGO Radio were cackling again with their fake laughter --but this Friday morning's schlock became even more schlockier --the gruesome twosome known as "Armstrong and Getty" played audio cuts, one of which at the end was of the grieving father who lost his daughter in the Florida high school massacre. That didn't stop the idiots from their embarrassing laugh orgy.

Side note: KGO would love to rid these clowns but they have a contract.

Image result for sandhya patel*Bizarre interview on KCBS this morn: Stan Bunger and Holly Quan had an interview with some professor in England. The topic was conspiracies and centered on such horrible tragedies like the Sandy Hook massacre and Florida HS (there's more of course but these were highlighted) Quan asked the guy why such crazy conspiracies (that Sandy Hook never happened) exist. The guy mumbled off something and then said with emphasis: "we have video, we have eyewitness accounts" as if to counteract the wackos who still say neither mass shootings took place.

My reaction: why would Bunger or KCBS even have this guy on at all? It only gives the nuts who believe this carp more ammunition (no pun intended) to spread their evil, crazy ideas. I can't believe KCBS let this make their air. I'm outraged. I could only imagine if I had lost a loved one and heard about these crackpots who spread vile, fake conspiracies.

*Hands down the best weatherman in the market: PIX's solid, accurate, straight to the point, Paul Deannu --knows his stuff and doesn't make himself look like a clown and foment faux importance.

*A 1-A to KGO's Sandhya Patel; also, hard worker, tremendous screen presence and accurate too. Doesn't mug nor make silly comments; I adore Sandhya.

Image result for paul deanno kpix*Hey KRON: for the 11,656th time get someone off their ass and FIX! your awful sound in the studio! It's horrible and distracting and sounds like an echo machine, crappy audio even by your lame standards. God, what a catastrophe. You would think this would make for mandatory "do it" status but not at the local albatross furniture-selling station. Worse, it wrecks Pam Moore and Cathy Heenan.

*Yeah, of course Dennis Richmond wasn't entirely beloved at KTVU. He was often moody, arrogant and several times disrespected staffers, some of whom worked right next to him. Even in his prime, Richmond seemed to have a chip on his shoulder too, particularly to the little people behind the scenes. But the guy had a 40-plus career there and was one of the Bay Area's great anchors. Longevity counts for something.

  1. Gotta disagree on the weather people. Patel and Deanno are okay but Bill Martin and Steve Paulson are the best! Martin is always on the mark, and I always learn something from him. Paulson is low key and really knows his stuff.

  2. Even though Chip Franklin is about wanted as a root canal on acid I'd still take A&G any day of the week. At this point in the game though, as it relates to 810 am, what the heck difference does anything make ??

    1. Agree.

Rich, what is your beef with A&G? Jealous? I see more rants about them than I do about Franklin, Beerman, or any other misfits KGO puts on which deserve more outrage of poor radio.

I like the humorous banter in the morning about the headlines. It eases the night before hard news.

And I heard their show today in it's entirety and you were not accurate in your assessment. They did not make fun of the father, nor did they laugh. They pointed out that it takes a lot of work to stop these sorts of things, not just a want to stop it so do it like the father wanted.

I know this won't get posted because it contradicts your review. Great blog...

  4. After Young Broadcasting got too greedy and lost KRON's status as the SF market's NBC affiliate, I thought KRON and KNTV would basically switch roles, and KRON would become the podunk operation that KNTV used to be.

What didn't occur to me at the time was that KNTV at least had a relationship with ABC before the transition. KRON was left twisting in the wind without so much as even a WB or CW connection to attract a smattering of viewers, and their operation makes the hokey Monterey/Salinas pre-NBC KNTV look award-winning and technically adept in comparison.

KRON is a complete waste of valuable broadcasting spectrum. I'm amazed they're even able to remain operational. Somebody needs to end this miserable situation.

  5. Rich, this isn't related to this post, but can you give us more details about the situation at KQED? You hint about it sometimes, but not much more. The constant pledge drives when they get plenty of corporate sponsorship and basically have commercials at the end of every show, is annoying as hell.

    1. Yes, Rich, please give more info on KQED. I stopped my donations.

    2. I stopped giving money to hospitals when I found out how much the people running them make.

  6. I seriously doubt many people tune into a particular news broadcast because of the sports or weather anchor. (Although I will admit to changing channels if I saw Roberta Gonzales doing the weather on KPIX.) If Ibanez leaves KTVU, it will have about the same effect on the station as when Lloyd La Cuesta or Rita Williams left.

  7. Sorry, Ibanez is over-rated and overpaid. There would be no dip or drop in the ratings if he leaves the station. Nothing. Look at when Dennis Richmond left. No difference. If the person is replaced by a capable individual that nothing will happen. On-air talent play in important role, but are replaceable.

  8. Regarding Ibanez, I agree with Rich.

I've spoken with Mark at multiple sporting events/venues in the area, and so have some of my friends. During those occasions, Mark invariably comported himself in a positive and pleasant manner. He has been a longtime Bay Area resident, and his local pride, knowledge, and community spirit is evident. His reporting during the October firestorms, which was obviously trying and outside of the realm of "The Sporting Life," was stellar.

Mark has been a stalwart at KTVU, and I hope they extend his contract (with a well-deserved pay increase).

  9. Big fan of Allie Rasmus here too! Her and Rosemary Orosco brighten my day every time they appear onscreen. Yuuuumy!

    1. ..."Her and Rosemary Orosco.." It should be said the correct grammar is..."SHE and Rosemary Orosco..." HER is incorrectly substituted for SHE all too often and sounds like "SHIT"!

    2. I like Rosemary Orozco, too, and I'm a chick (not that it matters). She's pleasant and professional and doesn't bumble over every other word like Bill Martin does.

  11. I would like to know why nobody in local news "proofreads" their screens on sportscasts... they consistently cover up the network chyrons with their own banner across the bottom or invariably place their logo on the same side of the screen as the scoreboard chyron. (don't get me going about spelling mistakes in the "crawl")
