*Yeah, I know most of you (maybe) don't like Mel's politics; I'm not much of a believer either, but guess what? She moves the needle. 'Nuff said.
*Comparing KNBR to WFAN is like comparing Rosie O'Donnell to Rihanna.
*That schmuck that runs KGO 810 was quoted in the Ben Fong-Torres press release about how "we have to cater to the millennial crowd." First off, millennials don't listen to KGO and millennials only buy backpacks, tattoos, and cheap cigarettes.
* I know I'm hard on Ben Fong but, seriously, does anyone read him? And as a reader noted, 1978 was 40 years ago. When Rolling Stone was a real magazine and Ben wrote actual interesting prose.
*There goes by detente with Audrey Cooper, the EIC of the SF Chronicle, a big Giants fan.
*KNBR new slogan: "Thee Middle-aged, White Man, Irish-only, Sports Leader!" Or, in real terms, Cumulus at its finest.
*Mike Anthony is to directing radio stations is Mel Gibson converting to Judaism.
*Chef Ryan Scott and Ronn Owens: Birds of a feather...
*Scott likes to have fun with the ladies which is always good when your wife's pregnant.
*Sorry, I'm not on the Bring Back Copeland bandwagon because, like Owens, Copie kissed a lot of Cumulus ass. Talk about karma.
*Dan Rosenheim, the ND at PIX, still thinks he writes for the Chronicle. So, great, lousy writer, lousy News Director. Maybe he should apply for a gig in the Trump administration.
*As of this writing, PIX has not hired any more Hawaiian anchors although they do have a rep at the Fresno Macys.
*Michelle Griego: looks can be deceiving.
*Leah Garchik: makes Jan Wahl look like Kate Upton.
*If Garchik got paid by the amount of Wahl, Janice Hough, Marin yentas, Mike Krasny, mentions she'd have Bill Gates money.
*The only people who still listen to KGO are the same people who watch "Wheel of Fortune."
*Ethan Bearman: I'd rather go on a date with a one-legged hooker in the Tenderloin than listen to that carp.
Again, great programming, Anthony, they'd love you in Akron.
*See, here's my deal with Chip Franklin. Chip has to make a living. And Chip is doing precisely what they've told him to do and that is to do it their way or the highway. Franklin has a contract too and Cumulus, which is almost $3 billion in debt, don't like buyouts.
*Mark Ibanez, who's been at KTVU for almost 40 years and is an icon here has a contract that's up in March. Dear Gregg Kelley: whatever you do, or don't do, I'll tell you what: you should re-up with Mark because he's got a huge and loyal posse. Two years and an option for a guy still on his game is a bargain.
Plus another thing: the women love him.
*Before I get back to the schmooze, a momentary interruption: you all come here to read this. And for the most part, you love it. It's not the NY Times or Page Six but you still read it and peruse while you schmooze. So be nice to me and send me poetry and a future ex-wife because at this rate I'm not gonna be able to pay my shrink and that's frightening.
*More Sandhya Patel: someone wrote to me, "..so what, most everybody 'works hard'". No madam, you're dead wrong. A lot of folks mail it in and have a foot out the door the moment they sign off.
Sandhya works hard and studies her craft. How do I know? Because someone at KGO-TV who is respected told me.
I'm a believer too. I watch. She does her homework and she's great to look at too. Yeah, go ahead and attack me because I said she's hot. Sue me.
*Add KGO: Lisa Argen, Circle7's weekend forecaster is also good. Keeps it nice and simple and doesn't showboat. Knows her stuff. And also pleasant on the eyes which makes for a good high-pressure system.
*Of course, Argen escaped the KRON gulag but then again, that was long ago when KRON was an actual TV News station as opposed to the furniture sale operation it is now.
*Still checking for a pulse: Kenny Choi.
*95.7 FM, 'The Game': sports-radio version of CSPAN4. Keep it up and you'll be headed for "Book Notes."
*Be honest, you love this shit. I dare you to tell me otherwise. Go ahead, I dare you.
I have to shake my head at kpix. Out of all weather people to hire in this country.. HER? The voice makes me turn the channel. Also not a fan of those who disguise their culture by dying the hair blond
ReplyDeleteDon't think she's "disguising her culture"; her name kinda gives that away...besides, anyone can dye their hair blond; it's not Anglo-exclusive...
DeleteHappy Birthday
ReplyDeleteNo Kent Brockman for at least another month - March 14th, to be exact, is the next schedule new Simpsons episode because of both the Olympics and more award shows.
ReplyDeleteLast heard that Robert Conrad resides in the Sierra foothills, with his right side paralyzed from a renowned 2003 car accident that took the life of the other driver months after it happened. Yes, I remember those Eveready ads.
Who's bigger: Jan Wahl or the cat? Isn't that photo an example of animal abuse? She's got her big ass mitts around that poor kitty.
ReplyDeleteDid you read that article by Hank Shrillman about Barry Bonds? He was rubbing his Giants World Series ring while he was writing that story. Once upon a time, the Chronicle beat writers refused to have the Giants pay for their travel arrangements. Wonder if that holds true now? Kinda think not and that's reflected in Homering Hank's writings.
You're not being hard on Bennie the Mouthpiece. You're telling the truth. He's worthless. He has a mirror in every room of his house so he can look at himself and say how wonderful he is. He writes nothing. But he fits the profile of the Chronicle writer -- just here to collect a check.
Bring back the San Francisco Progress! At least they covered something.
dear fat shamer at 2:39, I don't know if anyone has told you, but most Americans are overweight. Did you think Jan Wahl was there because she wants to have sex with you? or because she loves movies and loves to do reviews? IS that evil?
DeleteSo who is running the show these days at the mighty Circle 7? Trixie? Or was she given a broomstick?
ReplyDeleteEvery time you post that photo of Lisa Argen, I think of Attack of the 50-Foot Woman...
ReplyDeletehmm, I know you delight in focusing on the physical attributes of women who are on the air. Why on earth, however, do you find it necessary to bash the appearance of Leah Garchik who writes for a newspaper? I'm surprised you didn't mention that the first woman in your column is in her late sixties or early seventies and has plastic chest attachments.... Doesn't that make her too old and too phony for you? Tell us more about "talk television"?
ReplyDeleteDoes Ben Fong Torres write his own copy for the Chinese New Year Parade? If so they should confiscate his typewriter!
ReplyDeleteI think of Mr. Burns from the Simpsons.
ReplyDeleteMillennials have proven themselves to be more libertarian than anything else, trending toward accepting progressive fights as accepted fact. Things like LGBT and racial equality go without saying.
ReplyDeleteMillennials in the Bay Area are individuals who are listneing to podcasts on politics, news, and NPR produced pieces. They're not listening to the garbage that KGO is putting out there at all.
KGO has literally NO IDEA what they're doing and either does Cumulus who just hired Rita Cosby in New York with a Guardian Angels guy who is almost 70.
This company has no idea what it's doing. They're just trying to figure out how to sell the assets.
Rich, everything you describe here has the feel of an industry whose business model isn't dying...it's dead. These problems have a way of fixing themselves.
ReplyDeleteA major part of this remains our cost of living and dependence on the public sector to provide employment in this region. My wife is Civil Service now so we're not going anywhere but it's out in the open that San Francisco is a mess. It's painfully obvious that we once again find ourselves at the top of a bubble that is about to pop. This is what we do.
I for one enjoy Ben Fong's column in Sunday's Chronicle Pink Sheet. His piece gives another perspective on the media situation in the SF Bay Area, and from someone well versed in the milieu.
