  1. How is Eric Thomas handling Dion Lim so far?

    1. I suppose he likes her because she's perfectly dull and dreary, what's not to like?

    2. She speaks a little loud is my first impression. She needs to get the bay area laid back style. Slower, mellow.
      Great looks go without saying.
      Just slow down..

    3. I was waiting to watch Dion Lim when she announced on her Facebook page her first day on the job was 10/2. Waiting and finally saw her this week with some brief disappointment. When she face the camera, I notice her head is turn sideway when she talks, it seems she need to get use to the main anchor spot and the Bay Area. Her voice is OK, needs to talk slower and changing that accent a little. As for image, not bad, better than watching Veronica and Betty on the rival station.

    4. Dion Lim is ok, but I have seen better in Costco!

  2. Do you think as highly of the current incarnation of KCBS and its on-air people as I do? I think it's overall a terrific sound and very effective.

    1. Nick, I'm not that old, but I'm old-school. I like the old KCBS that pretty much stuck to news and was devoid of the news content of today. It's more 'entertainment news' than news-news, if that makes sense. As one observer put it, KCBS used to be run like a news station, now it's run like a radio station.

    2. It does makes sense. And now that I think about it there is so much repetition that it shows that resources are thin and probably about to get thinner. You're right, and also they do traffic pretty darned well...

  3. If you had the power to fire one Bay Area News Director, who would it be?

    ReplyDelete

    1. "Fire" is a heavy word because I wouldn't like to mess with a person's livelihood even in a theoretical sense like here; that said, I'm not a fan of KRON's Aaron Pero who bullies people and makes them (some of them) feel very diminished and uncomfortable. I wish he'd be more civil. There's others here in the Bay Area that lack people skills but I don't know if they're firable.

  4. Are there any "Harvey Weinstein" types working in Bay Area media?

  5. Hi Rich,

Do you happen to know where all the old KGO Radio hosts are? Are any of them on the air in the area? I know some have passed on like Gene Burns and Pete Wilson. I guess some would be John Rothmann, Ray Taliaferro, Len Tillem, and Dr. Bill Wattenburg. I know Bernie Wards is out of the picture. Thanks for the great Blog...

    1. Wattenburg is retired and apparently happy to remain that way. We used to patronize a well known dentist friend of his who says Bill just got sick of the bullshit and exited the business.

  6. Rich,

I know I have addressed this ad nauseam, but what is to become of KGO-Radio? I cannot take another minute of rerun radio in the evening and hearing about someone's diet when fires are raging and political issues need to be addressed. I'd do anything to bring back Pat Thurston and John Rothmann in the evening. Help Rich!

  7. I've been wondering why on the Michael Savage show we replays of the first hour of the show on its third and final hour. Also what happened to the assault on him of a few months back ?? It seemed to have just fallen off the radar.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In most cases, yes, Savage repeats the first hour of the show, he's been doing that for years...as far as I know, the assault was legit and Savage and his lawyer decided, as of today, not to file charges. For whatever reason(s) I don't know--we'll have to wait and see.

    2. The only (main) reason he does the show is bec. Hes cleared live in nyc on wabc from 3-5 pm.
Im in ny and i stream ksfo for 3rd hour and i never heard a rerun.
      So...

  8. Rich,

Has KRON been interviewing at college campuses? I have ties older than some of their reporters. Am I getting old or is this the wave of the future? Hire young guns and get rid of the high-priced vets.

    1. Young means cheap so your vibe is dead on. It's the nature of the business and it's not about to change. KRON is not alone there too.

  9. Hi Rich-All this week I saw Lawrence Karnow doing the weeknight KRON weather reports replacing the departed Brittany Shipp. Has KRON officially decided on Karnow, who was their weekend weather guy to now be their regular Mon-Fri weeknight weather forecaster? Also speaking of KRON any updates on Avery Harper the solid former KRON morning GA reporter who undeservedly left the station around 5-6 months ago due to the ongoing repugnant behavior directed against her by their extremely repulsive news
directed Aaron Pero. Has Ms. Harper decided to sue KRON & Pero?
Is she still in the Bay Area or has she left for another TV Market. Keep up the great work work Rich! Cary from SF

    Replies
    1. I wrote that Karnow had the inside track on the weeknight weather gig if he wanted it because clearly, he had local identification, among other things, but the job only pays a little over 100 grand and based on KRON's m.o., they prefer women. We'll see.

Harper is still in the Bay Area and laying low. I don't think she's going to sue because that would be career suicide.

  10. When and will Trixie officially leave KGO 7?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought there was a good chance she would be done the beginning of this month, as I wrote, but she survived. But it's temporary. I think, as I wrote, her days are numbered because she costs the company money and is disliked by most of those KGO people she manages. Sooner rather than later.

    2. Sounds like a Burton stall tactic, which I would think not sit well with Iger and other Disney bigwigs who know how special Ashley & Finney and a few others are. Love to see Burton be should known that same door as Trixie!

  12. Any idea on what are the salaries of the morning team on KNBR and the Game? I would think the morning team of KNBR would make around or the same as Tolbert and Lund. Joe and Lowell making good bread at the ticket, probably not Dibbs

    1. I'm guessing around $300K for Knibber, hundred grand less for The Game.

  13. That Bruce Magowan on the sports is too wordy. Just give me scores. Is the sports report longer or does it just seem like it when he does it?

    1. He's trying to be creative; no problem with that, I'm just a little ticked how he stole the job from the guy, Dave Lewis, and humiliated him in the process too.

    1. A quick look at her resume on LinkedIn would tell you that she graduated with a degree from the prestigious Annenberg School at USC. I'm not a fan, but stupidity and laziness should be rewarded as such.

  16. It sure seems like Rosenheim knows how to play CBS HQ, has them wrapped around his fingers. I hope not. Because PIX will remain stale and only benefit from CBS' incredible network programming run (Shemar Moore's own S.W.A.T. series is getting pre-air raves like crazy; another strong lead-in to stale news) until DR gets removed, and everyone gets their wakeup call.

  17. Rich, rather than cable, I watch tv over-the-air using a tv antenna. There's multiple sub-channels for each station. For example channel 2 is actually channels 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4, each with different programming running in parallel. 2.1 is the regular channel 2 you see on cable tv, 2.2 is an Asian-language channel as I recall, or maybe Spanish, 2.3 is a old movie channel, and 2.4 is for tv game shows. Same kind of arrangement for all the stations, so there's 60+ channels of programming to watch. Sometime that alternator programming can be very important, like when the Fukashima nuclear disaster happened, the only way to know the plant's were exploding was watching a Korean channel. One Chinese channel also was reporting it. No American tv channel was reporting explosions at the plant at all. Meanwhile I could watch the plant exploding right in front of my eyes on the Korean channel. So my question is: Why are these sub-channels sort of hidden from view in the media? I never hear anything at all about them in the newspaper tv columns, in fact nowhere but sometimes you talk about them, especially channel 4.3 I think which used to be an very important to over-the-air watchers, a weather service channel. Unfortunately that one has switched to Chinese programming I think, so no more all-weather coverage.

  18. Rich,
What's the word on Armstrong & Getty on KGO? Are they close to getting the boot? Also, once the dust settles on the Entercom/CBS merger and sell-offs, what becomes of 1550 AM? I did not see it on the "divest" list nor did I see it on the "Keep" list. What do you know?

  19. Aside from Damon Bruce, hosts at the The Game are pretty awful. Joe and Dibs would be ok, but Lorenzo's lack of vocabulary and butchering of the english language make it unlistenable. The Game still hasn't solved the 10am-noon riddle. Papa is better now that he doesn't have Lund dragging him into the gutter everyday, but Greg still comes off as that creepy old uncle that spends an inappropriate amount of time talking to your teenage daughter at a family reunion. Damon is generally good aside from his pregnant pauses and patting himself on the back while Chris Townsend is the wonder bread of radio, bland and white as can be. The ratings for the Game have plummeted recently and they're obviously hoping the Warriors can help them, but how has Entercom continued to let this shitshow run off the rails?

  20. Early 1970's KPIX,

I remember the goofy news format KPIX adopted I believe in 1974 where they attempted to make the set look like the Washington Post newsroom with a huge square table, two anchors at the front, weather and sports tucked away in the back. They had front, side and rear cameras with the entire preposterous setup chum-bait for local columnists who had a field-day with it. Any memories of who the news team was, all I remember is the unforgettable Milt Khan.

    1. This is intriguing. The earliest KPIX newscast clips that I've found on the internet are from the late 1970s, by the time that the "Eyewitness News" moniker was adopted. I suspect that accounts of early 1970s KPIX News appear on microfilm of Bay Area newspapers of that period. Perhaps this was a "Group W"-wide phenomenon, so KYW Philadelphia, WBZ Boston, KDKA Pittsburgh and/or WJZ Baltimore might have had similar news sets at the time.
