  1. Much of Hollywood in those days was an escape into extreme glamour and precious quality. This may have been because most adults then had grown up during the Depression and lived through WW2. They needed to see clear, unambiguous examples of 'The Good Life'.
    This gave many something of beauty to strive for.
    Mel Torme was but one performer who knew how to work a crowd and put on a good show. The dancers were a big part of the show's essence. Some of this exists today, mostly as a tribute to Old Hollywood itself. A lot of folks still rely on entertainment for a healthy diversion from the mundane.
