Sarah and Vinnie
*Many a times I get email from you guys asking why I don't cover FM Radio. It's a logical question and my short and simple answer always is, "what FM radio?" In the old days there were quite a bit of noted DJ's on FM--people like Stephen Capen, who was both talented and hysterically funny. Capen was a fixture on the old KSAN and provided great laughter for Bay Area listeners. Nowadays we're reduced to frauds like "Sarah and Vinnie" and mostly innocuous voices on the FM dial that don't have any personality and just play songs. It's a wasteland really.

Steve Aveson
*Yeah, Sarah and Vinnie have never excited me. I've tried numerous times to listen and I can't stand the aura. She (Sarah) seems to think and act as if she's God's gift to the world --I'm sorry, she comes off as uber-bitchy. It's not good radio. He (Vinnie) must be the ball-and-chain guy because he acts like a wuss on the radio. Like the guy that hosts sample treats at a Costco tasting. I'll skip the Cheetos and head over for  a turkey sandwich.

*THIS JUST IN: KRON's 10 PM News has gone to the crapper, not that it was ever going to challenge KTVU but it's just a bland, amateur-hour production that is nothing more than a rebranding of their 6 PM newscast. Plus, anchor Steve Aveson seems to think he's become a living Pete Wilson. Sorry Stevie but you're nowhere near that talent level and you're just a tad too serious. Lighten up.

*This is the deal with Ronn Owens: he comes in around 9: 30 to do his show and is out the door at 11: 55. Ronn is doing his KGO show so he can get out of the house and give his wife, (Jan Black) a break. Ronn doesn't give a shit that KGO has become the AM radio abyss. It's just a job for him now and poor KGO doesn't have anything new or exciting to offer so they stick with him. (For now)

*How many weather people (on both TV/Radio) said last week that "we're in for a couple of weeks of sunshine and blue skies--NO rain for the foreseeable future." Rain is forecast for Saturday and Sunday which only confirms you want accurate weather forecasts? Look out the window.

*Speaking of Ronnnnnn, his boring "R and B Joke Hour" is soon about to infect the radio airwaves. This is an hour of bland jokes co-hosted by Mr. Nepotism himself, Byron Allen, eh, Brian Copeland.

*Cheryl Smith is a publicist in town who sends me a question: "What's your favorite radio station?" I tell her KCSM-FM --the 24-7 jazz station run on virtually listener donations and College of San Mateo subsidies. Now I hear they're having financial problems which is sad because KCSM is a terrific radio station.

Melanie Woodrow
*I've been watching Melanie Woodrow a lot on KGO-TV and generally like her work. Pretty damn good reporter. Then I hear she's a pain in the ass to deal with so I guess she's a load. Aren't they all?

*As most of you know I'm still trying to figure out where to find a single, sincere, legitimate, 40ish woman out there who wants me not just for my body but my inner soul and sense of humor.

*The latest on that once loving anchor husband and wife team in the morning in San Jose. He's slowly trying to get his life back together after she threw him into the poor house. She's continuing to act like a Play misty for me.

  1. KCSM-FM has the same problem that classical and big band stations have had: nobody but a small core audience is listening. The end is all but inevitable unless some substantial permanent endowment funding is secured. The audience is simply not large enough to sustain a format that no one listens to, even a non commercial one.

  2. My favorite radio station(s) are all on SiriusXM. You should spend the $14 a month (significantly less if you work the system and sign up for six month stints for around thirty bucks). It's worth it for the Underground Garage and Deep Tracks alone (with loads of great deejays channeling Tom Donahue)(and few or no commercials). Today's FM and AM radio are a waste of dial space.

    2. I guess we have to pay for everything these days to get what once was a "free" product of quality, from radio to simple customer service.

    3. Yes, Anonymous #3 (I'm the original poster, or Anonymous #1). I resisted for YEARS to pay for TV or radio, and I mourn the passing of sponsor-supported "free" broadcasting. And it truly sucks that every damn time you turn around, somebody has their hand out toward you. But, yes -- you get what you pay for.

You might have to go offshore. But be careful of Russian dating sites, all of your enemies here will accuse you of ridiculous things and play politics with it in an effort to sully your reputation. The mindless sheep that can't comprehend the level of politics they're playing will buy into it. They like that they're dumb and mindless and only care about their drugs and reality shows as the great Doctor has said many times.

  4. What dignity Aveson had when he joined? He gives up at quarter to the hour every day. I can't imagine playing along let alone praising the Radnich view of anything. Aveson, even when Radnich is out there in koo-koo land, just says nothing..wont point out that the pompous one pollutes the air with his idiotic opinions.
That's because A. Pero wont let him embarrass Gary. B. Radnich convinces everybody its ok for "the toy department" to lie on KRON News. Hence, its fine for him to put down people you might respect. Just NEVER make Gary look as bad as he is.Don't bother him with facts.

Kuip is a bigot. Too many bigoted slips, too much bigoted attitude. Red State Giants get a huge pass on bad play and errors from Kuip. Blue State and Foreigners you might say he can hardly wait to show his disgust on an error or a key bad play.
I've heard that from him to the point I wonder how bigoted Larry Baer is to really pretend- like Trump- he hears nothing.
Its time for Kuip to call it a day. This is the bay area, not St.Louis or Atlanta. There,he can do the Indian tomahawk song all day...

    2. Let me put it this way - when a "Brandon" strikes out with the bases loaded? "The end of the inning" is all Kuip says calmly.
When its say- a Pablo- "That's a huge out that's going to really hurt the team" he says disgusted.

Believe me..that's not rare with him..its a pattern.

    4. Sorry that the Observer thinks so low of Kuip. But he has a point about Baer being intolerant. Baer is Lockstep Larry for a reason - no on air criticism of the team is allowed, and even though the superstition was erased by them Cubbies, Lockstep decides to make a fool out of our main Blog Man Rich and double down on the very inane Amy G. Real flagship stations are willing to point the game flaws of its team every game. Unfortunately, Kuip, Miller, et al are basically not allowed to state the obvious when the G-Men lose. A shame.

    5. I should add 827 that Sergio Romo personally answered Kuips portrayal of him as "bitter" and "bad attitude about the Giants he left"
Romo said on KNBR morning show..not true. He then said great things about his years with the Giants.
Kuip? You never heard him say a bad thing about Zito,Rowan or Matt Cain,or even Brian Wilson who also went to the Dodgers when he left. There's plenty there to complain about.

    4. 500,When he tells Sid Rosenberg that he " Is what all sportscasters should sound like" while knowing Rosenberg was fired by Don Imus years ago for calling Serena Williams an ape and NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR IT..as in he means that about African Americans, you admire that Radnich is entertained by a racist and bigot? PLUS- helps that racist and bigot spread his message on 50,000 watts? What does Radnich daughters think when they hear Daddy laughing at the man who called Serena an ape while working for Imus who later was kicked off Cable news for calling young African American female college graduate sports team "Nappy headed Ho's" as another bigot himself?
      What must his daughter feel?
Then again- what does his family feel that his partner- Larry Krueger was fired for calling black Caribbeans "brain dead"..as "a species" I guess he means. HE WAS FIRED TOO!
That's a lot of racism towards African American's that Radnich is not offended by..at all.
      He endorses it.

Good thing Radnich is on the edge of retirement..he would never make it starting out now with his anti bay area view of everything.
Jeezuz,he has brown daughters and hugs and pushes the career of a man who calls African American woman "zoological".

  10. Funny you do a post today about the state of FM radio. Just last night as I drive doing a "gig" second job, I find myself on 98.1 The Breeze and I REALLY enjoy Delilah's show. I JUST realized it was syndicated but it's a throwback to old night time slow jams callin "shout out" shows. I kind of dig it.

KCSM is chalk FULL of cool DJs. Just about every show is hosted by a knowledgeable and entertaining DJ... Alisa Clancy, Keith Hines, Chris Cortez, Chuy Varela, Melanie Berzon, Greg Bridges, Jayne Sanchez, Clifford Brown Jr., Dick Conte... Even the lovely Leslie Stovall shows up in the evening every now and again. It would be a shame if this station went away.

While I WISH WISH WISH KBLX would go BACK to jazz fusion/ smooth jazz (pre-KKSF)/smooth RnB format rather than what they play now, I DO enjoy Armond at night... again another throw back to the error of the baritoned, night time smooth DJ playing love songs. A decent show.

I don't know where he is now, but Chuy Gomez(105.7 Latino/ themed hip hop and RnB station ? last I heard) is a really good and under-rated radio personality who learned from the legend Marcos Gutierrez and others on the old 107.7 KSOL. His Mancow Bay Bridge hair cut stunt not with standing...hey we were all young once LOL.

I don't listen to local FM radio much anymore (WLCK ATL, WVAS Montgomery for my smooth jazz fix/smooth RnB, jazzradio.com for other jazz varieties) except for that mentioned above, it's not ENTIRELY dead... life support ? Perhaps but still a few good gems out there.

    2. At 3:18pm..First of all the expression is "chock full" and secondly, KCSM won't budge on their formatting... the DJ's don't seem to be the problem. The "music" between 6pm and 10 pm stinks. At best it's slow and depressing. At worst it's not even jazz.Kathleen Lawton needs to retire or at least take a long vaycay. KCSM too inconsistent..they play jazz in the afternoon..they should play jazz at night. Since you don't listen to FM anymore I wonder where your opinion comes from! Take care

      Delete
    3. Eh buddy...

      1) "chock full" yeah yeah... I typed this on a phone and was "corrected" EXCUSE ME. :)

      2) The jazz between 6 and 10 (Actually 9. 9-10 normally has some kind of jazz appreciation/education show) kinds of derives from the old KJAZ Dinner Jazz format... Yes. It's a little slower. The kind of jazz you'd probably hear at Top of the Mark during dinner. Still jazz... not depressing. A throwback of sorts. As much as personally would love for smooth jazz to return to SF airwaves, I DON'T want to hear it on KCSM necessarily- although others like the aforementioned WCLK out of Atlanta does a good job of mixing straight ahead, smooth jazz and some RnB. I'd like KCSM to stick to it's current jazz format- just MY opinion.

      3. I said I don't listen MUCH and that much of it IS specifically KCSM.

      4. You sound like a dweeb with your punk ass smug musings from behind some keyboard. Nothing in my original post was sarcastic or anything. Why did YOU feel the need to respond in kind. I spouted an opinion. I respect yours. They're opinions. This is a blog. Dude or dudette, Get a life.

I do know that the legendary Mr. KFOG, Dave Morey, resides in his native Michigan and is a major Judge Judy fan ("JJ Really Rules" - DM, and this was before another Michigan legend - Coach Jim Harbaugh - appeared on the show), but I don't know how he pays the bills now.

  14. Ronnnn's shameless actions and words after the purge in Dec 2011 was all you needed to hear to know the true Ronn. Of course we all saw through to his phoniness circa 1986 when he somewhat suddenly switched from being a voice of fairly progressive thought and turned into this sit-on-the-fence-mealy-mouth-milquetoast-middle-of- road-voice-of-reason. What BS it was then to witness and the BS grew and grew the next 30 years.

  23. FM music radio is dying thanks to Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming services. The ratings show the deep audience erosion every FM station has suffered. The only hope FM has of survival (and it's a faint hope) is the spoken word -- talk, news, drama, education, etc. But I don't expect any innovation from the companies that own the FM stations in this market. They're all in a death spiral.
