Jon Bristow Settles In at KCBS Weekend Anchor While Dave Padilla Does More Reporting; Rothmann Gets More Time on KGO Radio; Will Co-Host Post-Presidential Debate; Work Election Night Coverage; Appreciating Pat Thurston; Sizzling Good Alexis Smith on ABC7 Morning Traffic; Saturday In the Park 415 Media

Image result for saturday in san francisco It's become apparent now that KCBS has tossed the weekend morning news slot to ex-KGO tonsil, Jon Bristow. Subsequently, Dave Padilla, (Mr. Rise and Shine) has been deported back to reporting and only occasionally anchors.

I've never really warmed to Padilla's happy streak and style. He's a veteran and apparently has some following but not my cup of tea.

Bristow, with his baritone voice (pipes) sometimes sounds more like an FM DJ but overall is head over heels better than Padilla and has a firm grasp of the English language. It also helps that his ex-boss at KGO, Jack Swanson, now runs KCBS and has brought over a number of KGO reporters to 855 Battery.

*I've been saying for some time now that KGO Radio should bring aboard political guru, John Rothmann, as the election gets closer and closer. Looks like they have.

Rothmann, who's been filling in a lot lately and has appeared on the station on a regular rotation, will be analyzing (with Pat Thurston) the Presidential Debate Monday Night and will also be assisting Election Night coverage. He'll also be doing his normal fill-in shows. That's a smart move, KGO, glad you're finally on the Rothmann bandwagon.

*It took me awhile to really appreciate Pat Thurston (who's been instrumental in getting Rothmann on the KGO air) but now I look forward to and enjoy her weekend work (and when she fills in during the week).

Thurston is known for doing a lot of prep when she's going on the air and it's evident. Her guest list is impressive; her topics are newsworthy and relevant and most importantly, she's spot on in coverage during Breaking News events. This was most telling during the Orlando Nightclub massacre when Thurston and news guy, Bret Burkhart anchored live for hours and broke into KGO's insufferable, regularly-scheduled, taped financial shows.

It was vintage KGO, a throwback to a time when KGO was the go-to radio location when breaking news involving natural disasters, terrorist attacks, mass shootings and the like occurred.

*I haven't had a chance to recommend watching KGO'TV's newest traffic reporter, Alexis Smith, who, THIS JUST IN, is really good. Smith has a very smooth, concise and precise delivery and delivers several jugs full of energy. It's a pleasure to both watch and listen to her reports in the morning.

*The HOT weekend has begun. Enjoy and be safe, be cool too, have some cold, lovely adult beverages -and keep it here at 415 Media.

  1. Alexis Smith and Jessica Castro, 2 best morning reporters on KGO 7. Glad they are promoting Jessica Castro more on the special report as seen on the evening news. Good, natural voice, great reporting

  2. Is it really "analysis" with Rothmann when he's been Hillary's #1 supporter for the better part of a year on KGO?

That's like me asking Larry Baer for his opinion of the Dodger's organization.

    1. Every reasonable person in the Bay is supporting Hillary or not voting. Don't be ridiculous. Trump is a national embarrassment of historic proportions. Anyone who would actually vote for him truly is deplorable.

    2. More analysis than anyone else on the dial. I'm sure you love the hatefest on KSFO, tooting Trump's horn all day and bashing Hillary.

So, if someone votes for Trump, does that make them "unreasonable" or "deplorable"? That's what I'm getting, which sounds like a self-fulfilling prophesy. That logic is amusing.

    4. "Every reasonable voter" that is 1 generation away from being an undocumented Democrat.

    5. 7:03...A lot of "deplorable" Democrats voted for Obama during the 2008 Primary, thus handing Hillary probably the most significant "national embarrassment" in modern day American history!

      "Or not voting"...

That is exactly why you'll be talking about President Trump in January...

  3. KGO, unlike KPIX, gets it. They hire someone with brains to do traffic. Yo KPIX, as your ratings fall into the abyss and the criticism meter stays in the red, maybe it's time to look in the mirror, show some accountability and do the right thing.

  4. Best KGO hosts in order. I base my list off of intriguing topics, interviews and ability to hold an audience:
    -ronnnnn Owens
    -brian Copeland
    -john rothman
    -pat Thurston
    -chip franklin
    -Ethan Bearman
    -Ryan scott
    -Maureen langan
    -Armstrong and ghetty

    What's your order?

    1. Lose Copeland, Franklin, Scott, and Langan and It's an OK list. I would put Rothman first, then A&G then Ronnnn. The rest I don't care the order.

    2. Pretty good list but IMO Ronnnnn has slipped a lot these last few years. I don't tune in like I used to:
      Pat
      Rothman
      Copie
      Ronnnnnn
      Chip
      Ethan
      Maureen
      Ryan
      A&G

    3. 1. John Rothman
      2. Pat Thurston
      3 Brian Copeland
      4. Ronnnnnnn owens
      5. Maureen Langan
Bottom of barrel no particular order Chip, Ryan, Ethan
In the dirt, below the barrel - Armstrong and Ghetty

    4. I think they are all bad and Owens is probably the worst. Ability to "hold an audience?" None of them can do that! To even suggest Ryan Scott is better than any of them or that Armstrong and Getty aren't the best of the lot is just weak. I don't like them but they do the best show on what is a very weak station. It's not even worth putting any of them in order.

    5. To each their own, I use to like A&G, but they are kind of wearing thin, especially 4 hours, anyway I just use to listen to bit and pieces when they were on 910. I don't think they are the worst, but they are not the best. My list goes like this: John Rothmann, Brian Copeland (when he talks about a subject I care about) Pat Thurston, again when she talks about something I care about, 3 would be Ronn, after that I don't listen much, neither Chip, Maureen and Ethan can hold my attention for long, I like Christine Kraft when she fills in, which is rarely lately. If I add other hosts to this list Tom Sullivan (1530 am Sacramento) would be often be before Ronn, again it depends on the subject. The reason I put John first is because he usually talks about subjects I find interesting. Michael Medved on 860 is at times interesting. Tom and Michael are both conservative, I'm not, but I can listen because both are intelligent, and seem to be fair, and not always reciting right wing talking points, unlike Hannity, Rush and others.

    6. Are Owens, Rothmann and Thurston all north of 60 now?

    7. As for their ages, from the Net or my own approximations:
      Ronnnn is almost 71.
      Rothman is mid 60's
Pat Thurston and Brian Coepland, early 50's
      A & G are mid 50's
      Chip Franklin is 57
      Christine Craft is 72
      Maureen Langan mid 40's
      Ryan Scott maybe late 30's
      Ethan Berman maybe 40's.
Correct me if I'm wrong on some of these.

    8. Our two presidential candidates are either over 70(trump) or barely under 70 (Clinton just turned 69). Rothman and thurston are both in their sixties. Ronn isn't going to point out the youth and inexperience of those who would replace him. Craft, an occasional fill-in is also ancient. None of the rest are interesting, either because they suck or the "new generation" happy crap sucks. I mean what exactly is riveting about the comedienne who isn't funny, constantly talks about her need for booze, her unfunny Irish mother and garbage truck father from New Jersey? Copeland, a man who always picks white wives(very cosby-esque)almost always talks about race, predictably. Ethan wasn't half bad on KSCO, but with the manic topic changes and giggling of the insufferable sidekick, it's a real button pusher. Franklin could be good, if he didn't have the giggling sidekicks and the chicken dinner giveaways. Ryan Scott offers nothing,at any age. The equation of young audiences with young hosts doesn't hold water..It's not the age of a radio host that makes a show good. It's the content.

    9. I doubt Pat is in her sixties, she has 13 year old triplets, I would guess late forties to mid fifties at the most. I agree with you on Maureen Langdon, Ethan and Chip, but not on Brian Copeland, first of all the comparison is Cosby is highly unfair, Bill Cosby is married to a black women, he apparently had sex or tried to with numerous unwilling partners, both black and white. Brian is or has been married to perhaps two white women, so what, what difference does it make. No one has ever accused Brian of rape. As far as his talent as a talk show host, I find a lot of people is very unfair to him, he DOES NOT talk about race all the time, I would say barely 1/4 of the time, when he does I find it interesting, because it is usually because something is in the news about race, and I like his take on it, rather than the perspective from a white person, not that I mind that either. Anyway Brian talks about local interests, does a lot of interviews with famous people (Ben Vereen, the daughter of Grace Slick and Paul Kanter and others) he has motivational speakers on. I feel those who complain about Brian talking about race all the time, is paranoid about the subject and don't really listen.

  5. Alexis Smith and Roqui Theus both came on the Bay Area scene about the same time. With Roqui being such a completely, disgustingly horrible traffic anchor, I felt Alexis was overlooked. Glad to see she is getting some Blog attention.

  14. Roqui Theus tossed to Roberta this week with, "GURL what u over dere smilin' bout?" Then it hit me. KPIX has an aversion to educated and professional blacks. That's why they cut ties with Robert Lyles and were fine with letting Dana King go. That's why Uncle Tom himself Vern Glenn holds a gig there. Management at KPIX must find strong, smart African Americans with chops a threat. They perpetuate bad stereotypes of blacks with Roqui and Vern. I am black and even I find her reporting disturbing and an embarassment

    1. Their promotions team is pushing her so hard... First with her giving a garbled and slightly insulting speech to new citizens, then at a cancer walk. None of this will work... Instead of pushing her onto people, use this time to teach her stupid ass where the bridge is
