John Madden Might Be Back For Football Season at KCBS But 5X a Week Goner; 415 Media Exclu; The Skinny on Lee Rosenthal's Blow-Out; 415 Media Already Knows KGO-TV Traffic Chick; NBC Bay Area Not So Happy As Rio Coverage Begins; Mitchell 86 Has Staffers Ticked; I Like Liz Cook; KPIX Still Clueless; Tuesday Quickies

IF John Madden comes back to KCBS --and it's still a big "if" he'll return for the football season only and will only do limited chats, not his full five-times-a-week schedule. This from a knowledgeable source.

Madden has been recovering from both open-heart surgery and hip-replacement surgery --his last broadcast was Thanksgiving, 2015.

*Yes, it was Wonder Boy himself, former KTVU ND, Lee Rosenthal, was blown out at Boston Cox station, WFXT...here's the skinny, from 415 Media sources: "Cox came in and spent a lot of money. And hired lots of new people and the ratings shot up. Then, they let some longtime people go, including a very popular female anchor. In the last ratings book, the ratings had a sharp drop. Cox, you see, wants consistency. They demand success and it was not delivered."

John Madden
Maybe Wonder Boy should call Special Ed.

*KNBR and Cumulus are about to encounter the wrath of SF's political establishment in regard to their unlivable wages paid to station employees who sometimes do news updates, produce, screen calls, and shlep the bloated Bentley driver's personal belongings --one such worker, a vocal complainer but loves the gig so much is filling in as a sidekick to the Tenderloin guy this week.

*Barely a word from the Bay Area sports media Toy Department over Warriors' star, Draymond Green, sending a picture of his Johnson out to the World. Hey Mr. Jenkins? Hello? You too Killion. Scott Ostleranybody? No wonder it's the toy dept.

*I'm getting all this email over Circle7's new traffic reporter; please, if you read me, I already had the news months ago.

*NBC Bay Area will occupy the top of the Bay Area news and sports programming due to the Rio Olympics.

That's natural.

But if you were wandering around the studios down in San Jose you'd swear the mood was anything but festive.

August blues and a lot of it centers around ex-ND, Jonathan Mitchell who was shown the door a few weeks back.

Mitchell had a going-away party recently and some of the station's big wigs were there; 30 Rock isn't happy. Neither were a few San Jose hotties.

By the way, figure out, guys, it's either SJ or SF, make up your mind. That said, yes, Mitchell was screwed.

Elizabeth Cook
*I'll say it again: PIX's lead news reader, Liz Cook, has improved dramatically. She READS THE NEWS. They don't pay her to resemble Diane Sawyer. She may not have the brains and she got the gig thanks to her connected dad, hardly a crime and she's not the only one. I like her. She beats smarmy Alan Martin any time.

*That said, once again, KPIX has not a clue about how to program its news operation. Thus, the numbers are terrible and the morning show is a wrecking crew.

Maybe Rosenheim should hire another Hawaiian.

*MIA: Bruno Cohen.

*A new traffic hire, PIX, that doesn't even know how to pronounce street names, yeah, that'll move the needle.

Alan Martin
*See, here's the problem, Alan Martin: you look angry and pissed off, en fuego. Like you're entitled to look and sound like you're Mac only Dave would have kicked your ass. He didn't like phonies, Martin, he would have been wise to you the minute he saw you.

You don't come across as warm, Alan, you appear like everyone is beneath you and that's why your Q rating is in the toilet. You have all the warmth of a Millbrae Taco Bell.

*QUICKIES: KGO's Larry Beil will be doing some ESPN work, with authority, beginning Wed. nite...some major news talent at KGO caused quite a storm over the weekend: "When is this fucking set gonna happen!?, "they uttered in the newsroom. A few gasps and then a quick return to normal...Trixie was notified, I'm sure. Speaking of which, her highness has quietly begun asking a few people if they talk to me. She's not dumb enough to put it in a memo. Hey, Trix: even your snitches hate you...PIX: One black full-time anchor and he's in sports. But hey, we got your Asian women and blonds!

  1. Does Rich ever inform or present relevant news on this blog or is it just a page for him to constantly bitch, moan, and complain about local media?

    1. Funny, there's an irony here --someone I'm sure will point it out.

    2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was a great movie. That's what you get at this sight, Good, Bad and the Ugly of the News and Sports media. That's why it is a "great" website, actually a whole lot better than great!! Keep all of us informed Rich, we like the Good, Bad and Ugly stuff. That's why we come here!

No more verify tests, I guess all my calls to the FBI did some good!

    3. The irony is you calling Allen 'smarmy', which is exactly the word I'd've used to describe the dimbulb Disney girl.

WTF is it with you and Allen, one of the warmest, most genuine goyish anchors we have? Sheesh.

  2. Hate to say it, but the KPIX traffic person was hiring an African American for the sake of hiring an African American. It is painfully obvious and the managers should be ashamed of themselves for letting such a no-talent on the air. Letting that poor girl cluelessly suffer makes them look even more racist than they did before

    1. What happened to Jianna Franco? I thought she did just fine with traffic. She's cute, knows the roads and has a really nice voice to listen to. I remember her from KCBS radio a while back, obviously experienced. She also came across as friendly & down to earth, rare for a TV person. Did she leave KPIX?

    2. I think it has more to do with her father being a former NBA player/coach. She probably has good social media skills too which seem to be more important now than actual talent and experience. She was working in Reno just a year ago.

    3. She's not horrible, but holy crap!!!!!! What a slap in the face to Liza and Gianna

    4. Good lord is she awful. Probably nice, but denser than a sack of bricks. Not particularly attractive either. She is just not a broadcaster

    6. If they needed a darker complexion black person so desperately, why not get keba to replace michelle? Atleast she is a real broadcaster!

  4. Don't expect any righteous commentary coming from Ann Killion regarding Draymond Green's tasteless pictures.
She is too busy practicing her best Giants cheer.
Go Giants, go! You show them Ann.

    1. Ann is on with Tolbert and Lund right now, she is currently in Brazil about to cover the Olympics. Probably a bit too busy to write a commentary on Draymond's junk.

  5. All the TV stations are just hiring younger and cheaper and they don't care about your experience or lack thereof

  6. with Durant signing and ''rio'' hype, sports writers don't want to upset the golden apple cart, maybe? but this draymond ''thing'' is the most interesting of all his ''incidents''. shows how ''media'' isn't always objective(huh?) the toy department has nothing to say about dray's ''toy''. wow, just remembered the giants are playing.the season has reached ''the drama point''.

  7. Draymond? When he talks? His nose gets the erection. Penusocchoi. Always the same "I learned" speech.

As far as Radnich? If he didn't brag to higher ups at KNBR and KRON that he got the Shop steward of the Union to jump at the bone he was tossed?,then I have no idea what Radnich is like.

  8. One return you mentioned a few weeks ago? Jesse Gary? has been getting more and more reporting time at 2.
Do you remember when he broke in at KPIX? He had a beard and look identical to Ed Bradley..Jesse even wore the trench coat and Fedora like Bradley.
All that is now gone and he wears plain light blue shirts-lol. Ed wouldn't have been caught dead in those.

She may even get a shot at a spot on a Nat'l Talk Show!

  11. Two thoughts: 1) Madden likely recorded his Stabler speech at his Pleasanton office inside the Hacienda Business Park (west side of the park off of Hopyard Road) - a once-a-week in-season chat each Friday before the NFL weekend is the best both Madden's doctors and KCBS can hope for; and 2) As long as Allen Martin is mistake-free with his copy, his contract will be honored. Broadcasting with VDLC probably makes any snide comments more subtle while still there. Haven't read any off-air trouble about him on this blog or anywhere else since the Night Nyuk pairing was made official.

  12. Is it me or is the Olympics just one big "meh"? Being in Rio is about as exciting as getting to spend a night in Salinas. There's so much hype about everything these days that some things just get a big yawn.

  13. Alan Martin's problem is that he won't close his mouth after a sentence falls out. He just leaves his mouth agape and his lips parted while he looks to the monitor to see if the package is rolling. Watch him, I ain't lyin'. Once you see it happen, it's all you'll see from then on. You won't hear the words he says in anticipation of his pie hole staying open.

    1. Agreed...Mallicoat at KTVU has the same problem...won't close his mouth after he's done speaking...annoying habit.

  14. Rich - Totally disagree with you about Martin. He appears more interested in reading the news than Bastida. At times the latter looks and reads like he's ready to retire.

  15. I am watching the KTVU 10PM tonight....and Heather is on instead of Julie (humm...) and of course, totally sexy in dress and standing too....and then Rosemary, also looking hot and sexy too (and yes, almost a cleavage for those that want that).
