It Was Nice to Watch a Qualified, Talented, Experienced, Woman Calling an NFL Game Last Night; Beth Mowins Prowess Trumped PC Run Amok; Raiders' TV PBP Broadcaster Delight To Hear/Watch

Beth Mowins
It was great last (Thursday) night to watch and listen to a really good and talented female play-by-play broadcaster. For a change, talent trumped political correctness run amok.

Beth Mowins was the TV broadcaster describing the accounts of the Raiders-Green Bay practice game on KTVU.

Mowins is an experienced sports broadcaster having called college basketball for ESPN and she also did pre-season games for the Raiders last year. She also worked for CBS.

The game last night was irrelevant --as are most NFL practice games; that's not the reason I watched and listened. I wanted to listen to Mowins because I had heard she was good. Really good. Moreover, I had heard she was actually very talented and that her gender would be irrelevant, she could call a game not based on a gimmick or publicity stunt. That she was actually qualified for the gig.

Can you imagine that?

The thing I liked most about Mowins is that she sounded just like any decent sports, or in this case, NFL broadcaster who was there based on her knowledge and acumen and not because she happened to be a woman. Imagine that.

Mowins was calling the game based on merit --and merit alone. Oh I'm sure her client got some brownie points but I'm certain that that wasn't their primary MO. I think "quality broadcast" somehow was the intention. Can you imagine that?

This whole phenomena began as a result of the 49ers broadcast hierarchy wanting to give a shot to a woman, Kate Scott, with NO Pro Football broadcast experience whatsoever--not a big deal but Scott only got the gig to draw publicity (and succeeded) and inevitable buzz that not only was she a woman, but a gay woman too. Again, no big deal, here, there, anywhere.

Only there was a difference.

Talent, for one. Only that apparently never entered into the equation. Regale the notion of experimenting with someone clearly not ready for primetime but hey, she's a woman, she's the update lady on the flagship station and she'll even talk about the game! Talent? Experience? To hell with that.  And the publicity we'll get!

Scott's lack of experience isn't such a big deal nor is her gender or sexual orientation. I bring it up because she brought it up, and continues to bring it up...I could care less about all of that but it is ALL PRECISELY THAT that got the gig for Scott in the first place.

Mowins, to her credit, doesn't talk a lot about being a woman broadcaster. Sure, she mentioned it; acknowledged it, of course she did but having listened to her and watched her this is someone who gets work based on something foreign here: talent.

Furthermore, she doesn't have to rely upon phony sports-talk hosts who bow on their knees and offer fake praise so they can kiss their bosses' asses and maintain the PC run amok.

What BS.

    2. What does that even mean? Half the population of America is female, I'd say it's already "feminized."

    1. Jug Head Millen kept interrupting her and tried endlessly to talk over her.

She called a good game. The game was boring and a pretty shitty game by the Raiders but she made it interesting.

  4. Let's face it, Scott got her job doing PBP for the Santa Clara 49ers because of her LBGTQXYZAEAEIOU affiliation, not her credentials as a professional sports announcer.

  5. The commentary was fine (and who cares). The game on the other hand was a giant steaming pile. The second Raiders TD was a freaking accident. This looks like last year's preseason. Love the Raiders but to have all the right ingredients and still have the cake fall is almost criminal.

  7. Here's another Lieberman rant to add - O'Donnell is also kissing up to Scott (or at least he did last night on PIX).

  8. OT but sports radio" My first good listen to Lund and Tom.
Wow,does Lund miss Papa? Does Tom miss Ray? Both to the hilt.
Lund and Papa - shock- must have been made for each other. Because Lund with Tom is boooring. Nobody with Papa laughs and squeals like Lund did.
Typical Lund-Tom conversation: Tom- " Albania lost to the Virgin Islands 100-48"..Lund-"Wow". Tom- "Yep".
    That's today's farm news reports!.lol
Tom is going lon long, long, monolougues. If you didnt know it was a two man show, you would think its Tom by himself again.
Ray Ratto could get his two words in much more often then Lund.
Tolbert must have told Lund "When I give my analysis? Dont interrupt with your opinion". Because Lund don't.
    KNBR made a mistake.
Lund did sound better on FM.

  9. Kate "My Pillow" Scott. Tired of having her lesbianism crammed down our ears. Always has to work in "my wife". Enough.

  10. Beth Mowins is solid. She's a PROFESSIONAL PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER WHO EARNED HER SPOT. Unlike Katie "Not Great" Scott, who is on the pedestal because she prefers women over men and happens to like sports. Katie, stick to describing swim meets and water polo matches.

The Raiders have been doing a lot RIGHT lately. The Mowins hire was solid. Meanwhile, the 49ers constantly find ways to step on themselves. Scott is a prime example and then there's Rudy Rudy Poohay on the television. Between Katie talking about her wife and Fitzgerald being a pompous ass, it kills any desire to watch 49ers preseason football. Congratulations! Preseason football is akin to watching paint dry and this furthers that belief.

  11. I don't know where Lund went, but thank heavens. My enjoyment of the game at that time has shot up at least 50%. Yeah!
