Anne Makovec |
Worse yet: By their move, management seemed to say that Medina is better looking than Makovec!
A source tells me: "She's really pissed; she wants out badly."
Either way, KPIX has another disgruntled anchor who has worked her butt off and labored hard to make the Sunday show a good local alternative to the national talking-head programs.
Maria Medina |
More PC bullshit.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember the last time I watched KPIX for news. I won't be watching now.
She should be the new host for TV20's Dance Party. She's used to working with a room full of Tards, so the transition should be seamless.
DeleteTV 20 Dance Party, probably the "best" dancers I have ever seen on TV. I really like the yo-yo guy, he seems to be in a different dimension. I have heard just to qualify for TV20 you have to have had at least two years of professional dance instruction.
DeleteThe PC phenomenon is increasingly concentrated here in the Bay Area. I don't see it to anywhere near this extent in other markets. There's increasingly a narcissistic high schoolishness to this place. It seems to be getting worse especially in what we used to call mass media.
Delete12:47 -- The yo-yo guy is a total trip. I turn on Dance Party just for him. I saw him in the background one afternoon on a KGO remote in SF; he was just twirling away. I know Morris Knight doesn't host it anymore. I FB'd TV20 about it, & they said Morris got tired of it.
DeleteI'm very sorry to read this. Anne substituted on the noon news last week and the whole program was much better. She has a lovely presence while still maintaining professionalism. Shame on KPIX - once again.
ReplyDeleteShe's going to become what Catherine Heenan is to KRON: the best one who ironically doesn't have a permanent anchoring gig, while lesser people are on every day. That's why I got out of that business--management doesn't recognize talent. If anything it's drawn to mediocrity. I think a requirement to be in management these days is a lobotomy.
DeleteKPIX has a thing for hiring fat women...Gianna Franco, Andria Borba, Julie Watts, Anne Makovec, etc. If KPIX really wants to improve their news, they need to stick young and hot talent on-air. Some of these KPIX women are just...UUGGGGHHHH!
ReplyDeletePlease-- Makovec is nice, Julie Watts is HOT in a mommy kind of way and Andria Borba ? Well I like my women curvy though. KPIX ? Heck give me the curvaceous April Cummings back from the Cayman Islands. I'm not mad at all. Looks not with standing, all of these women mentioned above are capable. Especially Watts who has done some pretty good consumer reports (the baby seat thing) AND has transitioned to weather nicely.
DeleteYou wouldn't know what true beauty is if it hit you in the face and Anne and Andria are very beautiful women...idiot!
DeleteJulie Watts came from KCRA, Sacramento, where she was the main Weather Anchor.
DeleteI heard that it is in Maria's contract, that CBS will provide the False Eye Lashes
Deletelol, guessing you're hot, young and buff? Or maybe notsomuch. Save your pennies and buy a dirty magazine- leave the news to the grownups
Delete@2:15 Wow you're showing your age. Why the fuck would I spend my money on a dirty magazine when there's the internet? News is headed toward young cheap and talent whether you like it or not.
DeleteI agree- Anne comes across as a consumate professional and authoritative. She knows her stuff. While Maria Medina is skinnier, I dont find her to be a talent. KPIX is making some very rash hires- from no minorities to ALL minorities. That is fine- if they actually got the job on merit. It is increasingly obvious that the hack traffic "reporter" knows nothing of the area- and her style of speaking is simply not broadcast quality. I can name a handful of Black reporters way more qualified to be on air but aren't, including Kraig Debro, Keba Arnold, Erica Kato, Nick Smith, and Robert Lyles. KPIX should be ashamed of themselves
ReplyDeleteThe thing is Rich, Maria Medina IS WAY better looking than Anne Makovec. There is no contest, and Maria Medina is also a good anchor/reporter. I have seen her doing the noon news when she substituted for Michelle Griego during her pregnancy leave, and Maria did a great job. So put Maria and Anne side by side, and there is no question that Maria Medina is better looking, and is just as good of a reporter/anchor.
ReplyDeleteYou're crazy@better looking. They're a dime a dozen in San Jose. You need your eyes checked.
DeleteSo what if there's a dime a dozen, she's still super hot. From the pic above, Anne Makovec looks good too!
DeleteBoo, what a shame and waste of talent. Since when did looks (although I'd argue that Anne is better looking) trump competency? Believe it or not, some viewers actually value brains. Good luck with those ratings.
ReplyDeleteIf you value brains try twitter or facebook.
DeleteAre you joking? Yeah, twitter and fb- the bastion of intellectual excellence...
Delete'Since when did looks trump competency?'
DeleteAlways has, always will.
Seems like all management wants today is Latinas, and preferably Latinas in their 20s. Maybe their "research" shows that Latinos are the only ones who still watch the news.
ReplyDeleteWhat Latinas? Maria is Asian and Roberta Gonzales is the only Latina on the news staff and it is Asian women that they are bringing in.
DeleteRoberta and Michelle Griego, 11:46.
DeleteWho would you rather wake up next to in bed on Sunday morning, Marina Medina or Anne Makovec? I think KPIX has figured out the consensus.
ReplyDeleteI don't.
DeleteWell, both...but I'm greedy that way...
DeleteFat women? Anonymous, you are an f##king jerk
ReplyDeleteUgh oh...we got a bad ass here! Sir George Mathews, White Knight of the ALbany Kingdom. Here to defend the rights of fat women!
DeletePretty funny. Curvy women are great. And Anne looks good
DeleteMatier looked none too enthused last weekend being paired with Medina. Nothing against her. She DOES look good and seems capable. BUT nothing wrong with Makovec either... in either looks or capability. I for one love the curvaceous Makevec and she had a good rapport with Phil Matier.
ReplyDeleteHaving worked with Anne in years past I can assure you she has good rapport with everyone. One of the genuinely nicest people in the business. Unfortunately, the survivors in this industry tend to be the most ruthless and unpleasant.
DeleteI suppose this kind of thing applies to men too. The proper look can be more important than experience and savvy. Funny, it was KPIX who stuck with one of the Bay Area's most popular anchors, Dave McElhatton, who was as frumpy as they came, and people loved and felt at home with his frumpiness. But of course that was a zillion years ago.
ReplyDeleteAs a woman who works in the fitness industry, I find some of these comments disgusting, and enforcing of unhealthy body ideals. Anne is a classic (and classy) beauty-since when is being average sized too much? What does someone's shape have to do with the news? I would much rather hear the news from someone who knows their stuff and is engaging and relate-able, vs someone simply reading off a screen. Subscribe to the playboy channel if young and hot is all you're after.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately "average" these days is overweight.
DeleteBig ratings equal big bucks! Don't have to subscribe to Playboy, I just turn on Fox (cable). They have more beautiful, intelligent and gorgeous women than I can keep track of.
DeleteFox (cable) number one in the ratings for 16 years in a row and the women put them there!! If you are going to play the game, you need personnel that will help you win the game! Fox figured it out 16 years ago.
On another note... I post his here because it is the current topic. WHAT THE HELL happened on KTVU this morning ? Pam Cook was off and Claudine Wong was substituting but the entire set seemed to have an attitude. The forced banter REALLY looked forced this morning. Sal and Steve ignoring jokey cues. Something was off this morning. Ironically Dave, Pam, Steve and Sal, (and Alex) seem to get along just fine WITHOUT the forced banter and IT used to be a natural comradery. Now you can tell someone MADE them make up forced banter. It was fine the way it was (year or so ago before Fox took over).
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Dave Clark's "banter" only consists of "Yeahs" and "uh-huh's." This morning he was doing the 4 a.m. hour.
DeleteNo belittling intended, sorry if it came across that way. Just using it to call out the fact that she really is a true journalist. Anyone who's ever chased a story with her has no doubt about that.
DeleteI had the good fortune to work with Makovec on her first gig out of college years ago. She's still a good friend, and is undoubtedly one of the best "news" people I've ever worked with She was an absolute professional from the word go, and is still as good as you'll find.
ReplyDeleteAs for hotness....it's pretty disgusting that it even comes up. Really, are y'all a bunch of 13 year olds?
Calling them 13-yr-olds is an insult to real 13-yr-olds.
DeleteWhy is "news" in quotes? She is in news...no need to belittle her with the quotes.
DeleteFor heaven's sake, Anne Makovec is not fat. When I worked at PIX a lot of guys would get whiplash every time she walked by. OK maybe just me. Because day-um. Ain't none of the other women ever got that reaction, especially Roberta.
ReplyDeleteI think they're both very professional and good when anchoring. I get the feeling that Mackovec is probably a little quicker on the uptake and can handle things on the fly better. Just my opinion on watching both through the years. I sensed they were grooming Medina when she anchored more over Mackovec while Griego was on maternity leave.
ReplyDeleteWhat I used to value about KPIX WAS their commitment to using local talent. There is nothing more valuable than the connections to the community and following of a reporter born and bred here. Hearing the mispronunciations especially in the morning make me turn the channel. I really hope 5 gets it together and returns to what is tried and true.
ReplyDeleteIf she really wanted out..KPIX - like all local stations today- would hold the door open. Somebody cheaper and less seniority.
ReplyDeleteKRON let their best up and coming reporter Kate Cagle just walk to soucal. Just like that.
Kate went there for personal reasons, "Observer." It had nothing to do with KRON.
DeletePersonal reasons like no future advancement at the KULT and better pay down south.
DeleteThe usual "personal" reasons.
You just wonder sometimes how Stan comes to his conclusions without a shred of evidence.
DeleteNo, dummy, personal reasons having to do with a husband getting a job in LA.
DeleteMedina is a closed-mouth talker. A bit of a monotone.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid the damage to the KPIX brand is so extensive that only a complete management shuffle could save this sinking ship. The recent hires, including the new morning ep (and her traffic hire), have been beyond disastrous.
ReplyDeleteAs in "Survivor", one vote for Medina..... Makovec is, well, overweight to me (but Americans tend to be. .. especially if you go overseas, then you will notice that more)...MM is qualified to be the replacement anchor though.
ReplyDeleteIf any of you had the intelligence, you'd know that most women on TV are thoroughly UNDERweight. As per the game they feel they have to play to keep up "appearances". It's totally insane, on their part, management's, and we the viewers.
DeleteYou apparently have reading comprehension problems, 6:31. The OP didn't say most women on TV were underweight; s/he said Americans tend to be, and they are. S/he said if you go overseas you tend to see thinner people, and you do, though that is starting to change there too, albeit more slowly.
DeleteThe thread here is comparing Makovec to Medina 7:26, or didn't you read ALL the posts. In the real world Makovec is not overweight. Medina, like most women on TV, is underweight.
DeleteCohen & Rosenheim are clearly acting like fat cats, showing little interest in changing their status quo minds and adjusting their thinking, and as long as that's the case, the ratings will continue to struggle, even with CBS' strong network lead-ins. BTW, it was inevitable that Medina was going to get promoted to a higher reporting responsibility. It's a shame that Makovec took the hit for it. And yes, Matier didn't care for the move, either, but he has seen much worse at the Chronicle, so he'll adjust to this fine.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to tell Anne's politics which is a no-no for any reporter or anchor. Good for Maria.
ReplyDeleteAnn is a good reporter but has a shitty presence. She makes me gag when she talks on air. In person she is much better but when the camera is on she just looks like shit and is constantly adjusting herself. Maria is all around a better anchor/reporter. Sorry Ann, you suck!!
ReplyDeleteMaria Medina is a wonderful reporter. I seen her reporting on KOVR 13 weekend evening news a few years back and surprised she join KPIX last April. She is beautiful and does not show a bitchy attitude when reporting. Just natural, serious reporting. She should become the morning news anchor. She did a wonderful job when the current reporter, Michelle Greigo went on maturity leave last year. She got a main anchor spot for 3 months and I was hoping she will replace one of the reporters, but this never happen. Putting her on the weekends is just a waste for a good talented reporter. The surprising thing is putting her on weekends, KPIX is going against her good friend, Chris Nguyen on KGO who also reports on the weekend mornings at times.
ReplyDeleteLOL!
ReplyDeleteI love it when White people start whining/cryin' whenver a minority replaces a White person! The same White folk shoot down complaints by minorities who complain about Fox News hiring only pretty blondes.
Mackovec was unspectacular--just "competent." Medina is also unspectacular-yet-competent.
But she's cheaper. And prettier. And guess what? When she is deemed too old or starts making more money, KPIX will probably move her off the set and let her go. By this time, PIX will probably be on an all-blonde binge--and replace her with a blonde.
And I love it when minorities start crying whenever something doesn't go their way. "Must be deeescrimination!"
DeleteTo test this, I recently changed my photo on LinkedIn. I found a headshot of a black person and put it up instead of mine. I changed nothing else. By the next day there were six perfect strangers who wanted to connect with me, and two of them urged me to check out the job posting on their company's websites. I never received such attention when I was white.
It's tempting to apply for one, and when I inevitably get the call, go in and let them see me in all my whiteness. I want to see their faces drop.
The thing is, those people on here who say that Anne Makovec isn't fat, are probably fat themselves, because it is obvious that Anne IS fat. Does she have a nice face? Yes. Is she a good reporter? Yes. But none of that matters in today's media markets, when salaries and looks are the bottom line. Maria Medina will work for less than Anne. Maria Medina is a good reporter/anchor, as she demonstrated when Michelle Griego was on maternity leave, and Maria substituted for her. Maria Medina is also totally hot to look at! Sorry Anne, but like other good people before you, such as Sydnie Kohara, John Kessler, etc, being good isn't enough anymore.
ReplyDeleteThe morning Train Wreck of a Traffic Reporter seems to continue to get worse. You're only as strong as your weakest link. She single handily brings the Morning News down to a disgrace of a major market Newscast. Simply despicable.
ReplyDeleteI just opened up the site and saw one large photo of a middle-aged female who isn't that attractive. Below her was a very attractive young female.
ReplyDeleteI read the story because of the attractive young female in the photo, I wanted to see who she was, what the story was.
I think it's pretty simple these days. Local tv is not the powerhouse it was just a few years ago. People go online, be it their phones, computers, whatever, for everything they want. The only way people will watch local tv is if they are old, or, they happen to be at home, want to get some local insight, and channel flip a bit. When you're channel flipping you're going to stop at the beauty as opposed to the normal looking woman. It's just human nature.
Maria Medina is young and beautiful, she has a window to work in this industry. Sadly, in a few years, she will lose her looks and be tossed aside like the others.
Frank Sommerville wrote a scathing denouncement of the naked Donald Trump statue as "disrespectful"
ReplyDeleteGee Frank, get a sense of humor. It wasn't even realistic.
Could some station do a split screen newscast? Half of the screen would be the usual presentation and the other half a rear view of the anchors for homies like me. I like 'dem big butts!
ReplyDeleteLOL @4:05 That is what Facebook Live is for.... you get off broadcast shots of your favorite female news personalities. Mine is Olga Ospina....
ReplyDelete
