Bay Area Ratings Out; Michael Savage on KSFO/National Dominate; Savage Kills on A25-54 Demo; Most Entertaining Show in Bay Area and Beyond

The RATINGS for the SF Bay Area May, '16 book are out; no surprise that KNBR dominates thanks largely to the Giants early successful play and Warriors playoff run.

Mostly, every station is stagnant. There's a few exceptions.

KCBS flatlines, but still is the top news station in the Bay Area.

KGO, after changing formats in March, stayed largely irrelevant --it's going to be an uphill battle no matter what.

*SAVAGE NATION RULES --KSFO is Happy; So too Cumulus.

The BIGGEST takeaway was the continued strong advance by KSFO, which, with an emerging morning show and dominance midday --thanks to a scorching performance by Michael Savage--has become the de facto TALK Radio leader in the market.

Michael Savage's Noon-3PM tour-de-force delivered on all platforms, including the key A25-54 plus Savage dominated the all-encompassing streaming sites; turns out Savage's fan base includes the significant younger demo who tend to listen to radio on their smart phones and lap tops.

Savage has been nominated for the National Radio Hall of Fame.

A local broadcast observer told me he wasn't surprised about Savage's popularity from the so-called millennial crowd. "He's controversial, A., B. he tends to have a more 'entertaining show because whether you like him or not, he really does move the needle, and C. even though he's syndicated, Savage's template is really quite SF-oriented."

How so, I asked the broadcast observer. "Have you heard his rants about 'Pelosi (House Speaker, Nancy) and Dianne Feinstein?" Well yes, I have, entertaining and funny as all get-go and I'm usually on the same political fence so politics really doesn't matter.

See, that's the thing about Savage--give a listen. His own predictability is his unpredictability. Take this radio tapestry from May (Click here on May 18th broadcast for full show) Savage built an entire show on the theme, "What is the truth?" There's heavy-duty thinking, a virtuoso of thought-provoking rants and some riveting callers with real-life encounters. Savage is at his best here using a non-politics model to perform, (he is, after all, a performer) one of the very best shows in his multi-decade tenure.

Savage does it his way, the only way he's comfortable, with or without mainstream approval but even they have come aboard. With this latest ratings report, particularly his killing in the younger demographic, even the industry has taken notice.

Savage has another advantage; instead of wholly concentrating on politics and the election --he can go off traditional and, frankly, boring repetitious tripe like this and broadcast a segment about his favorite Chinese restaurant or my thoughts about him being blackballed and his response.

I'm a little biased; those of you that come here know I'm a big Savage fan and regularly enjoy "The Savage Nation." It's the BEST radio show in the Bay Area by far and it's easily the most entertaining and provocative show in the nation.

Savage doesn't mince any words nor allow any PC mosquitos to hit his skin; he most ardently tells it like it is without the slightest bit of fear; you may disagree with some of his takes, as honest and genuine as they are, but you will most certainly LISTEN.

The ratings confirm this and ratings don't lie and have no political bent either way; the suits at KSFO and Cumulus are delighted about all of this, why shouldn't they be.

  2. No mention of the huge jump after KISS-FM became The Breeze? 10,000 songs in a row and a heavy TV campaign helped of course. Talk910 goes .8, .7, .4, .3. Yikes. Not looking good for the "new" KFOG either.

    1. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that the songs The Breeze are playing now are a completely different genre than what they played "10,000 in a row." Lots of similarity between The Breeze and 103.7 all 80's.

    2. I agree. The biggest takeaway is the huge jump in ratings for KISQ-FM, 98.1 The Breeze. It went from 2.2 to 3.6. Who would of thunk?

East Bay JAPs for Trump 2016!

  4. Agree that Savage is, by far, the best in Bay Area talk and maybe America. He is unique, non-PC, smart , unique and INTERESTING! He is more older, wiser and more seasoned than other talk show hosts and even plays the good music and talks about the good times, yes good old days, if you will 'when the chrome was thick.' Unlike others who don't have the historical base, Savage doesn't concentrate on only politics, which sets him apart. Hope he's around a long time because, otherwise it's a wasteland out there with boring people we call Softy, Dreck, Chip etc etc.

  5. Agreed. Love Doc Savage. He puts those libtard weenies on the roaster and calls out the Democrats for their two faced bullshit. It's just sad that so many here n the Bay Area and California as a whole don't have the intelligence to see how they're being manipulated. If ignorance is bliss this is Eden.

  6. I've met him a few times I like him. His anti-semite positions are the truth. Israel is dangerous and the Jewish agenda in this country is dangerous. And his feeling and mine is Israel must fall.

    2. TROLL FOR SURE! That's how these liars operate... skew truth, turn things upside down, misrepresent and pretend that good is bad. We know YOU "Savage Fan" and YOU are dancing to the tune of the DEVIL! JEW HATERS WILL BURN IN HELL!

    3. Savage fan, just whom are you listening to. Savage is a huge supporter of Israel, he has some harsh words for liberal Jews in the US, but that is not the same. Years ago when I first listened to him (kind of by default) he would at times come off as anti-Semitic, but I have not heard that in years. Granted I don't listen a lot to Savage, since I'm not a fan, but I have listened enough over the years to know he is extremely supportive of Israel, one of the very few issues I agree with Savage on. Despite being fairly liberal, I too am a huge supporter of Israel, having lived and worked )on a kibbutz)in that beautiful country when I was very young.

    4. Savage "FAN" you are no fan of Dr. Savage! Michael Savage has always supported Israel and the Jewish people because he is a voice of TRUTH. The exact opposite of you.

  7. I'm not familiar with his show.
I'm guessing he regularly skewers liberals/Obama/Hillary. But unless he also skewers Trump/Christians/the GOP, then I won't listen.

    1. He's a true equal opportunity offender. Listen, you will not be disappointed. Yes, he supports Trump, bot not because he's god. Just because he can seal the borders and repatriate American money and jobs. Savage is actually very critical of Trump's new GOP advisors.

Hey, they're doing just fine, holding at #20 on the list! That's only 19 spots below where they were for decades before Cumulus came along to fix them.

  10. Listen to Savage almost every day. Its blunt force truth at its best. Language, boarders and culture all the way. He's an American firster, what the brian dead "let's create 37 new genders" left likes to label as racist. He see's the future and it looks like Baltimore,a welfair state on steroids. Blue lives matter!!

  12. My day is incomplete without Savage! I am LOST on the weekends! Michael offers breadth and depth on any subject. I love his lessons in history as much as I enjoy his references to literature. When he uses words I am unfamiliar with, I get a kick out of finding out more about them on the Internet. I have learned a great deal about things from Dr. Savage, but I will be most grateful for his insights into politics. At least I know that I am not the only one who has similar thoughts and feelings. He keeps me sane. THANK YOU, Michael Savage, you are one of a kind!

  13. It will be curious as to what KOSF will do in the next ratings book since they just went all 1980s. I don't think it will last 6 months. Foreign language station next?

As for KFOG it should flip to KNBR-FM.

  14. I listen to him here in Ohio. The show is great for San Fran.

  15. Disagree with him on a few subjects, but acknowledge that he is astute, articulate, and audacious. Part professor, part provocateur, part pundit, all presented with poise and passion.

  16. I don't agree with Savage, but he is very intelligent and articulate unlike Rush Limbaugh, who likes the sound of his voice.

  19. Hillary would love to get rid of Savage and "all" of Right Wing radio. We can't let that happen!! I am a Savage "plank owner," have been tuned in since his first show in 1994. It's been a great ride, I knew he was going to be great!!

If you are anti-Savage, then you must be anti-America also. He speaks for America and the American people. This November we will all have a chance to exercise what he has taught us and he has taught us well!

  20. Listen Savage Nation everyday, like it, anyone has common sense will agree most his opinion.

  21. Regarding Talk 910's appalling, and falling, ratings, can someone explain how Gil Gross, Corey and Joel, and Doghouse still have shows on that station? This is a serious question from someone who is admittedly ignorant about the workings of the industry. How does the asinine "talent" at such a sucky station get paid? Why do advertisers go to that station?
Gil Gross, particularly, who has such a huge opinion of himself....how can he go on with a straight face, facing such horrendous ratings??

  22. KSFO has gotten way better now! the morning show is entertaining not a Warrior's love fest like on KNBR. if you look at the past ratings without Giants baseball on KNBR and the Warriors doing their thing, the ratings were subpar. But with Baseball back the ratings went up! people like me tune into KSFO for real news to get thru the morning!KNBR is only good for Giants and 49ers, the warriors are just overrated. Dr. Savage isnt afraid to speak his mind about the lack of border security and how the democrats are destroying america by Rewarding illegals for crossing over instead of kicking their ass out!

  23. I admit...I've started to listen to him...I'm in my mid 30s...and I don't think this country is going to hell like 8 years ago...but I think we've become too PC .. I agree with what he has to say...

  25. Okay Rich, what is the deal? Is it possible to have a little diversity of opinion when it comes to Savage (have to be for him) or Ronn (have to be against him). I listen to Savage for a few minutes a few times a week, sometime he rails me in, for the most part I prefer Tom Sullivan on 1530 Sacramento, he is also a conservative, and I'm a liberal, but I don't care for Ethan Bearman on KGO, I think Hannity is on 650 Sacramento, whom I care for even less than Savage. Here is the thing about Savage, as I see it, he can be entertaining, especially when he does not talk politics, however for my taste he is just too negative, always has something negative to say about almost everyone. To the blogger at 4:16 stating if you are anti Savage you must be anti American, that is just ridicules and extremely narrow minded, the US is made up of diversity, diversity of opinions diversity of cultures. When the gorilla was killed Savage went off on the mother and somehow tied illegals or blacks or both to the incident, absolutely no facts to support that. As much as I don't care for Savage, Rush, Hannity etc. I totally support all of these hosts being on the radio. As I said diversity of opinion is what this country is all about (and I'm an immigrant from Scandinavia)I don't want to see the fairness doctrine applied to talk radio, that would be a huge loss.

  26. There is so much one can understand or learn by listening to the one and only Savage. Many mistake him as a committed conservative. He is close to a free thinker one can get. He supports Trump for what he stands for. Trumpism is the political manifestation of what Savage is advocating for more than a decade. Many prominent politicians feared to appear in Savage Nation because his reputation as not politically correct. As far back as I can remember, Trump never hesitated to appear in his shows and they hardly differed on any issue discussed. I never thought that their long standing Talk Radio friendship will one day culminate in the meteoric rise of Trump.
I am a foreigner. I regularly download and listen Savage Nation talk shows just for his well articulated and intelligent analysis. It helps me to think and understand many issues in a much better way. We perceive certain things correctly, have certain intuitive feelings correct, but find it difficult to say it with confidence. Solution? Listen to Savage Nation!

  27. I'm very liberal (progressive, whatever) I listen to a lot of drive tie radio, and sometimes take in Savage for a few minutes - it is pretty obvious to me that conservatives run the table on radio when it comes to presenting their opinions in an entertaining fashion.

For some reason conservative success on radio does not translate to television, where guys like Bill Maher and Jon Stewart do really well. I doubt that Savage, Limbaugh, Levin and guys like that could do a show like Bill Maher does, they're far too used to going solo. Also, Maher and Stewart let conservative guests have their say, I can't imagine Savage and Rush doing the same.

    1. I'm very liberal too and just can't stomach the right wing hatefest on the radio. Limbaugh had a TV show years back but it failed. Dennis Miller too had a TV show that didn't last long. He'd be very funny if he flipped and was a progressive talking head instead of a Con head. Much more material too goof on, especially now with this jackass Trump.

  28. To the anonymous Liberals that can't stomach the truth:
Something is articulated clearly and plain that your sensitive souls don't agree with makes it a hate fest?
One track minds you have, incapable of clear thought.
You can always listen to Air America or Al Jazeera America oh - never mind...
