 BREAKING: BANG BUYOUT

I just learned that Bay Area News Group is buying out some of its veteran reporters.

Last day for many is tomorrow (Friday)

  1. I was bought out once, early retirement with a $25,000 dollar incentive. The Feds took 40% of the 25k. Take a serious look at what you are being offered!!

  2. It always seems to be reporters. I guess they need to find a way to pay for the Orange County Register somehow, but you would have thought the Salt Lake Tribune would have taken care of that.
The truth is though, any reporter now working knows the clock is ticking. Never good to be the oldest person in a newsroom even if you're shy of 50.

  3. Let's hope the entire Mercury News editorial board is bought out.
They refuse to admit that the Alameda County DA will not press charges against the Pleasanton officer who shot a robber.
Message to the Monkey News, what goes around . . . comes around.

  4. They did recently merged many of their papers into the East Bay Times site with an annoying paywall when you try to read so many articles. Like cable, only gonna be few publishers.

  5. Herhold, Pizarro and Richards?

Did they get their well-deserved 25k? (less 40%, of course, to support their left-wing proclivities?)

    1. Good riddance to them. I stopped subscribing to the San Jose Mercury years ago, not because of internet access, but the constant biased agenda of their "reporting".

    2. Mr. Richards and his "left-wing proclivities" doing the Road Show column? Get a grip, man. And "biased agenda?" Yikes.

    3. Mr Richards may not be a left wing nut, but that editorial board most certainly is.
Here's a question to the Monkey News editors.
How much are you forcing your writers to contribute to their health plan? Is it 80%?

  6. Here is how to get around the Mercury News or any other BANG site paywall. Use Google News to search the headline. Click on Google News result. You're in. Unlimited # of stories. I think that's the deal with Google - to be aggregated you can't block the content.

    1. Thanks for the tip, you are 100% correct. If you buy lotto tickets, I hope you win millions and if you do, I would like to borrow some money. As Sheldon Cooper (Big Bang) would say, Peace Out!

  7. So they ended up whacking a dozen copy editors. Used to be a news story received multiple looks. An assistant metro editor, and then on to the desk where it would get at least one more read before being plopped onto the page by someone else. The lack of respect for their own product (let alone customers) is pretty telling.

  8. Rich-- this is happening in other places right now too. For example, in Seattle, Tegna has given "early retirements" to almost all the longtime figured on KING 5. We are talking about people like Jean Enerson, Dennis Bounds, Jeff Renner and Linda Byron. These people are legends in the Pacific Northwest. All the people given this "deal" were over 50. It's happening in Austin too.
