72 Hours Of Angst at KGO Radio

*Angst in the KGO Radio newsroom; senior level reporters and PM news anchors are especially weary of something happening

*New PD Anthony rumored to begin his game plan (whatever that is)

*Source: Anthony doesn't want an "old KGO"--meaning, hiring some of the old talk hosts isn't part of the playbook, for now

*Anthony vs. Lee Hammer; Anthony is PD, but Hammer is Opps MGR. No power struggle but its known Hammer has final say on most personnel moves

*Ronn Owens future ever more murkier as health issues surface

*Cumulus last day of the month is notorious for surprises --especially Feb. 29.

*Developing...

  1. I hope they wipe the place clean & really don't care what happens to them. Especially that fuckface Lowenstein. I'll never forgive him for being the only one not affected by the Great Purge of 2011.

    1. Hopefully no one criticizes you for how you feel, 327. I understand totally, having been a victim of corporate bullshit myself. Lowenstein needs to go. His time passed like the pizza with double cheese that I had last night. KGO is a shell of its former self. And that hoity toity Bristow can go too. Might as well have everything originate from Dallas or Bombay. India has taken over the Bay Area. Might as well stay in line with the majority out here. In due time, they'll outnumber the Mexis.

  2. 50 years ago, in February of 1966, RKO General launched KFRC as a Top 40 station. Here's a link to a few memories of the golden days of that station.

    2. Indeed KFRC and their ticket giveaways to Rolling Stone concerts.
And lest we not forget, KYA and their brand of music.

    4. Oh,man, that was a time of radio meaning something, reflecting the culture & giving the people what they want. "The Big 610" sponsored & promoted "The KFRC Fantasy Fair + Magic Mountain Music Festival" held June 10 & 11th, 1967, high on the south face of Mount Tamalpais. At least 36,000 people peacefully took part in this 2-day event which featured The Charlatans, Mt.Rushmore, Canned Heat, Dionne Warwick, Every Mother's Son, The Merry-Go-Round, The Mojo Men, The Seeds, Blues Magoos, Country Joe and the Fish, Captain Beefheart, The Byrds with Hugh Masekela on trumpet, Tim Hardin, The Sparrow, The Grass Roots, P.F.Sloan, The Loading Zone, The 5th Dimension, Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Spanky and Our Gang, Kaleidoscope, The Chocolate Watchband, Jefferson Airplane, Sons of Champlin, Tim Buckley, Steve Miller Blues Band, Country Joe and the Fish, The Mystery Trend, & New Salvation Army Band
The Fantasy Fair was also The Doors' first large show and happened during the time that "Light My Fire" was climbing to the top of the charts. What a long strange trip it's been!

    5. That's an incredible lineup Travus. Better than Monterey Pop? I didn't know Mt Tam had such a music festival history!

    6. Way different than Monterey Pop, which was held at the much larger Monterey County Fairgrounds featured more groups, was filmed, & lasted an additional day. It would be mighty fine if "Fantasy Fair" soundboard tapes & accompanying video just happened to "turn up" sometime, somewhere to properly document this psychedelic surrealistic "flash in the pan"!

  3. What about KCBS and KGO merging?

  4. I don't think Ronn will go on his own so he really needs a good kick in the ass to realize it's over. He had his time and did really well bucks wise so I don't feel anything for him, but have a good retirement. I also hope they get rid of this Chip guy, he is beyond listening too. It didn't work in San Diego and it hasn't here. It seems that KGO has gone for the RADICAL LEFT WING COMMUNIST fore-mat that wants to hate the moderate right that lives in the Bay Area.

  5. There will never be a power struggle with Lee Hammwr. Lee would rather Anthony make all decisions as long as theyre not his own. Everyone knows Lee wants to do as little as possible and lay the blame on others. Lee is weak.

That Owens even has a show says everything about the state of cumulus and kgo..I'm just glad they don't play it on the office.

  6. Do you think Cumulus wants to write another big check if they lose a wrongful termination suit to Ronnie a large Barbeiri?

  7. Franklin is dull, banal, and none too intelligent. With a lousy radio voice/persona. They have to make a move in that slot.

  8. @Anon 749pm....KGO's a lot more moderate then it use to be, when Karel, Ray, Rothmann and Bernie were on, which happened to be when they had great ratings. I'd say lean more left and they'll get higher ratings but it may be too late.

  9. I hope the new PD can do even more PSA's for recycling phone books at DEX or how many lumens an led bulb generates. You can never enough of these PSA's back to back, hour after hour, day after day.

  10. @ 6:53: Syndicated programming is cheaper to run than local content, but syndicated content runs on a fixed clock; there are "n" number of spot-minutes available to local stations to sell. If you don't sell them all, they still have to be filled, so... PSA's.

    1. Thank you for that explanation. No matter what, they are better than hearing "1-877-Kars4Kids", but not by much.

  11. You're right. I think the big surprise was dumping their country station NASH. I heard they are off the air, gone, finished, dumped. Everyone is shocked.

  12. I could not have said it better myself about Kate Scott. Completely over-rated. She just gets in the way.

  13. I've noticed that Ronn Owens is now back to stuttering and losing his train of thought - like before his brain operation. I would say that it only had temporary results.
I call Chip Franklin the whiner. It is really annoying to hear him keep repeating the same phrase or sentence over and over again. It is the mark of a very poor talk show host when he can't seem to follow one cohesive sentence or thought after another.
