Brent Cannon and Laura Garcia-Cannon's Downward Spiral at KNTV; Domestic Violence Charges Against Him Emerge; Onetime Southbay Husband-Wife Anchor Team Featured Players on NBC Bay Area

Brent Cannon and Laura Garcia-Cannon in happier times
Brent Cannon long ago left the KNTV (NBC Bay Area) morning show anchor team with his estranged wife, Laura Garcia-Cannon. In May, it'll be five years.

The move, according to my sources, was accelerated by Laura's initial attempt to take control of the program and to implement her status as the morning program's "engine." At the time and not too long ago, the show had positive ratings and was one of the NBC O and O's most-watched newscast.

But that was then and this is now.

Garcia-Cannon and her husband are separated now with charges of domestic violence against him pending in a South Bay courtroom. By all accounts, things have gotten out of hand with her accusing him of various pushes and shoves, and more extreme physical behavior. According to a source close to Garcia, she has visible bruises to prove it.

The whole case of nastiness is complicated by the couple's triplets --Brent wants custody rights; she's got the children now. "It's a very sad situation", said someone close to the scene. "Because I know at one point they were a close family with such adorable kids and a great family life."

That all changed in recent years as she took the main anchor desk at KNTV and began to position herself as the station's top air talent for one of its most successful news programs and newscasts; it was difficult because they both shared the set as a husband-wife team --initially things went swimmingly but soon began to dramatically change for the worse.

Garcia-Cannon's and the show's inertia had a noticeable slip. Ratings began to tumble and soon, a large disconnect played out with management wondering internally if the couple's emerging domestic issues affected the program. She was high strung as it was and he tried to soften her approach even as things between them got progressively worse. They were able to persevere, if only temporarily.

He was booted from the show in May, 2011. Rumors started circulating as to why HE and not HER was let go. In the ensuing years, he landed a few radio and media stints and settled in on a consulting gig. In the meantime, both of them battled work and non-work tensions which began to become increasingly more pronounced and disturbing.

A tipping point came last July when the domestic violence issue flared up. He was served with a restraining order after one particularly troublesome home encounter. Through various sources close to the matter (all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity due to the nature of the story) police were called in after she accused him of shoving her to the ground. And he argued back that she exaggerated the description. She had visible bruises to support her claim. He was told to leave the premises and today is living in a local cottage. The matter is headed to both a criminal and civil court.

Garcia-Cannon is still, somehow, anchoring the morning show at KNTV under obviously extenuating circumstances. "I don't know how she does it--what with all this over her head," said a source.

Attempts to reach out to both Garcia-Cannon and her husband, Brent, are ongoing.

  1. And why is this any of our business? Is this a "news" blog or a "gossip" blog??

    5. yessir, Jeff, I'm that guy. GF & I watched this couple every a.m. for as long as that lasted.....it was a unique & usually pleasant situation - he appeared so gentle & open, and she so strong & self-assured; then the trio o'babies[!] arrived, and next the oh-so-sad, gossipy current situation

like so many other [apparently] morning news junkies, GF & I've moved on from Ch3 to endless switching back-&-forth between Channels 2/5/7

      sigh......

  3. One can get 'news' just about anywhere. Gossip is more interesting as Rich puts a locale and a face to what he posts. First I heard about this was from this news and gossip blog. More interesting than local news programming - and - aren't we all a little nosysometimes?

    1. dick head,
Yes some people are interested in trashy gossip. There's a big demand.

If Rich Lieberman wants to put out a trashy gossip blog, fine, he can do whatever he wants. The National Enquirer, (not sure it's still around) is or was entertaining. But it's still trash.

You can't criticize local media for being undignified when you yourself are in the sewer.

    2. More trash, Rich! Please!

  4. Rich, have you thought about following local media personalities around and peeking through their windows?

Also you should think about sorting through their garbage. You might come up with some great new exclusives.

  5. I hate to say it, but you see some of this behavior among TV 'news' folks because their egos get so big. They think of themselves as 'minor celebrities' instead of responsible journalists, and therein lies the problem. That's why depending upon getting reliable, interesting and credible news from such folks is a crap-shoot at best. What's really sad here is that these two obviously emotionally screwed up and selfish people may make life miserable for their three children. That's just another reason why so many folks out there, should never have kids in the first place. If you're not going to commit yourself to their happiness and you're going to spend too much time being self-involved and lashing out at your husband or wife in some teenage-like pique, you're not worthy of being a parent. Why do you think we have so many screwed up and dysfunctional people in this country?

  6. My take on KNTV morning personalities is they are all non personalities. I think Brent was the better of the two but recall seeing the pair way back when in Fresno if I recall correctly. As for the triplets it would seem this day in age a fertility treatment went a little too far for this to happen...

I sense a remake of KNTV's AM news crew... What became of their cute weather gal they replaced with the current homely one?

  9. I think when you have two prominent people involved in a criminal case alleging domestic violence, it is a story. Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects people in every socioeconomic level. Whether it is a false claim of domestic violence or the real deal, it is a serous issue. Either he is a wife beater or she is making false claims of abuse. Either way, it is a big deal.

Clearly she works out and pays high dollar for cosmetic work, but some of this "showing off " brings down her credibility. And as a fellow woman, I want to like her for her bubbly personality and accurate reporting. This other stuff is too much of a distraction and makes KRON look trashy. You can be attractive without trying. It's all become some sort of cartoon

    3. I agree with you entirely. She needs to wear more appropriate clothes for her age. It would do her more justice than the way that she dresses currently. It really does take away from her reporting.

  12. Rich you are correct to report on media people and their behavior on and off the job whether they live it or not. The media make their living by reporting on the public and public events and many times they get the information wrong. If Rich Lieberman had an issue public or private and it became known to the media, it would be BREAKING NEWS. Do your job.

  16. To all the people complaining that Rich is just posting "gossip," these two are public figures who put their personal lives on display when she gave birth to the twins. It's remarkable that the Mercury News hasn't written a word about this. In 2002, all the newspapers reported when Terilyn Joe got into the police blotter for throwing eggs and tomatoes at tree trimmers who were making too much noise outside her Russian Hill apartment. And before that, the papers wrote stories about the alcoholism problems of KTVU's George Watson. This is all fair game.

  19. I remember when Laura and Brett first came on. More gimmicky than real talent, but as we got to learn more about their personal life through light chit chat, Laura appeared to put down Brett about little things he did laughing it off as a typical man. She was always right and he was the goof. I am sure he could have comments about her, but instead he took the high road. It was annoying enough that I wasn't surprised when they sent Laura on a month of remote news programs around the bay and returned without Brett...working on a sister station in some special promotion.

(I had the same problem with how Rosie Allen always put down Ed Baxter in KGO.)

Kari Hall is so much better than Christina Loren. Kari reports the weather...period. Christina rambled on about so much nothing and then would say embarrassing things to Sam Brock or Mike Inoye that I just hoped that when I changed the station to KPIX I wouldn't run into Roberta (dramatic breath...) Gonzales. Kari is great.

    2. To 7:43. You are right that she never said anything directly against Ed, but when they "discussed", she never sounded like she believed what Ed said and always had the last word, like she knew better Just the impression I got when they were together. When she worked alone, she was excellent. Maybe it was their thing together, but I stopped listening to them.

      Delete
    3. I remember one time Ed was going on about how hard it is to pay bills. Rosie chimed in that she paid all her bills the day she got them in the mail. Ed taking the other side said that not everyone is able to do that...whether he was talking about himself or the listeners was unclear. But Rosie responded that he shouldn't buy things if he doesn't have the money to pay for it. Easier said for a single woman than for a man with a large family, so her comment was not necessary and felt sorry for Ed. Just stick to the news and spare us the Oprah moments, Rosie.

  20. I wanna hear his side of the story. I remember when they were both on the air and he seemed to be the calmer one of the two. It could be she's just simply better at the public perception game and has become a mean arrogant alpha witch hell bent on destroying her ex and knowing it wouldn't be that hard as it's the bay area and who would second guess someone claiming abuse?

    Just saying...

  21. The media reports everyday on this type of event in the general population, why not when it happens among newspeople? Not reporting it would be unethical.

  22. To the "LieberSlammers": Wake UP!! He is doing what he/this site is SUPPOSED to do- report on things of interest to the ones who visit the site.

Media is a cutthroat industry. Big money, big egos, fast pace, driven by internal politics, not to mention demented executives (Are you listening, Mr. McVey of "the cloud"??). I considered going into media (Radio) but was thankfully talked out of it by Peter B. Collins in 1984. Too cutthroat for my blood.

Never liked Garcia-Cannon. Odd looking, overwrought delivery, comes across a cold. Fits the profile of a career-driven-to-the-exclusion-of-all-else type of drone.

Good luck to Brent, with that domestic violence pall. She really pulled a Nixon on him with that. Those poor triplets....

  28. Seems to be a very one sided version of the story. Based on this article we should just consider him guilty and move on. There is another side to the story and it is not being told. Typical Biased media reporting. Reporters, are all lazy these days. How about practicing some real journalism and present the whole picture. CA laws basically force the police to arrest the male in any domestic violence complaint. The complainants statement is just that - their statement. It is not an unbiased accounting of events.

To the poster above regarding custody. According to the story he wants custody rights, that's a far cry from "Full Custody".

  31. As a female I was falsely accused of domestic violence against my spouse. I lived with his abuse for many years. I'm hoping her accusations are true and not an over blown disagreement. Once a statement is made, no court will over turn charges against the accused. I wish I had fought for my innocence.

Good grief - the courts are full! These "stars" can get carried away.
