KTVU News Is Unwatchable Unless You Can Talk Like a Pirate; Gulen-Loring Dueling Headaches; Assorted Holiday Cheer at 415 Media Wednesday

KTVU News --especially the new added hour in the morning and "The 4" has become a circus. Unwatchable, unless you like to watch the circus and a bunch of clowns --they might as well bring in animals, for heavens sake. Wait a minute! They have!

We knew this was coming with Fox taking over a year ago and ramping up its mission, apparently, to fuck up every known quality element that gave KTVU most of its prized status.

I have never been a fan of Gasia Mikaelian and her gushy-golly gee mugging of the camera for a former NFL jock was just plain embarrassing and ridiculous. I get the premise of morning TV News, extra-hour hijinks is, unfortunately, a part of the business model nowadays but this was insulting and hideous. Then again we're talking about the place where they talk like a pirate sometimes.

*I don't know either Leyla Gulen or Kerry Loring over at KGO-TV but they both look like big headaches. Gulen apparently thinks highly of herself, only KGO doesn't think so.

*Robin Winston is supposedly just a lovely, wonderful woman who is easy on the eye and works very hard. Well then, why in the hell is she working in TV and radio?

*You know, that KPIX wants us to know they're broadcasting the Super Bowl --I had no idea, really.

*One of these days KTVU will let reporter, Allie Rasmus get the anchor desk and show Gasia how a real anchor reads. And Rasmus has the looks too. Plus the chops.

*I've taken enough shots at Lee Hammer over the years so when I give him a little credit, it doesn't mean I'm sucking up. Come on man!

*It's a good thing Mikaelian wasn't interviewing Tom Brady.

*Bill Burton and Tracey Watkowski: birds of a feather...

*KPIX: anyone pregnant lately?

*Meanwhile, the sweeps weren't that good yet Bruno and the uptight ND that drinks beer pongs with the schmucky sports anchor still roll on. CBS doesn't care as long as they're making money --plus, the sales dept. is giddy over the Super Bowl.

*Joan Lunden and Kars-4-Kids: terrestrial radio diarrhea

*Gil Gross: slightly more interesting than a gouda cheese sandwich.

*Liam Mayclem: all the authenticity of a one-legged hooker.

*Jan Wahl: movie yenta everyone's worst nightmare at the Christmas party.

*Speaking of Christmas --it's party time; Cumulus SF stations this Thursday have instructed employees that the max at the bar is 2 drinks. Violate it and have to watch Chip Franklin read a "Rich Uncles" spot.

*In the Tenderloin during Christmas the old-timers have merry feelings about the Bentley driver. He had a Jag at the time.

*Ben Fong-Torres is, I guess, about to write his latest, thousand-word, coffee table press release on Larry Krueger.

*Ben works at the Chronicle so he's a "real journalist."

*"Talk 910": SF IHeart radio that has all the charm of a Pet Food Express in Chico.

*Armstrong and Getty: They really must have pictures.

*KNBR "Morning Show" latest "dude" count: 4,767 and counting.

  1. Hmph...speaking of assorted Holiday Horseshit, check with me later today about the 10-pound steak I ate last night. Time to crack the fucken toilet bowl!!!

  2. No offense Rich, but I always considered you the male version of Jan Wahl for your niche.

  3. This post only reassures us that telecasts are just poor excuses for original content these days. And management wonders why millennials don't watch TV...

  4. The Foxification of KTVU can be likened to Isis. Fox management has radicalized the on-air talent and has killed off its viewership.

  5. Leyla was an ice queen and that's putting it mildly. Good riddance to her cold demeanor and lack of traffic knowledge. Ch 5 is stupid for even talking to her. Her selfie demeanor she puts on TV is nowhere near the condescending attitude she gives off in real life

    1. "lack of traffic knowledge." I didn't know you need a trafficology degree to be credible. SHIT...I could even give the traffic report just by looking at Google Maps with my eyes closed.

  6. Rich, you teased the November local tv news sweeps. What are the results? Who's on top and who's not?

  7. Fox , Bay Areas own conservative tv channel. Any word on the Gun channel? And I remember when Frisco was Frisco.

    1. The gun channel is in the 300s, right next to the "we let anybody in as long as they vote for anything with a D and here take all these handouts just vote for the D", channel.

    2. So, 10:32, are you saying that San Francisco is not open minded enough ("Celebrate Diversity", HA!!!) to "allow" a conservative channel (and though KTVU is tanking, it's not conservative).

  8. 910's lineup fom hell: A&G, Gil Gross, Cory and Joel, JV and Elvis. 12 hours of crap. I think I'd rather hear the non-stop X-mas music on KOIT instead until Alan Colmes comes on @ 7p. Drex should hop over to 910, so it will be pretty much crap 24/7, (George Noory's Bigfoot/UFO show is more miss than hit).

  9. Someone else mentioned this in the previous Gulen post, but she seems to have vastly over estimated her market value and position at the station. Perhaps she thought her previous LA experience in a smaller market like SF would give her some cache with management. It doesn't usually come out in anyone's favor when they confront a supervisor and think he/she will win - always a big gamble.

  10. I agree with you on Liam Mayclem. He's about as credible as the Australian spokespeople you see on infomercials at 3 am in the morning.

  11. "one of these days KTVU will let reporter Allie Rasmus get the anchor desk and show Gasia how a real anchor reads"........She will never get that chance unless she gets Foxified first. Gasia wasn't goofy in the evenings until she got Foxified for the mornings. Allie and Gasia will sound just the same.

    1. Gasia was great when she first started at KTVU. To me, her coming-out party was when she brilliantly covered the San Bruno gas explosion. She was the only one at the anchor desk for at least the first two hours and she delivered - totally on top of the story without being overly dramatic or repeating herself. It's pretty challenging to do unscripted "real breaking news" and she made it look easy. I think Ama Daetz is one of the few anchors locally that seems capable of handling that kinda stuff.

      F**king Fox has ruined Gasia.

  12. Gotta fact-check; there is no Pet Food Express in Chico...there is one in Roseville, though, so close enough...and I feel you on Gasia; that was her shark-jumping moment for sure. Until I saw that I thought fairly highly of her...she's been FOXified...

  13. Benny Mixed Identity probably knows someone, so he gets paid to write nothing and hold a free lance gig. He's a shrill for the radio industry. He's worthless. He's not a critic.

It's all about pushing one's own agenda on TV and radio these days. Nothing else. No one cares about the audience. Soon more of the audience will go elsewhere for their news and programming. It's happening every day. More people are getting their heads out of their asses and smelling the shit.

  14. Kudos to Rich on this post. It takes a special kind of rhetorical talent to say so much and absolutely nothing at the same time. This entire post is just you whining. There is no story of significance, nothing breaking. It's only the angry, jealous ramblings of a mad man. Rich doesn't have any of the authenticity of a one-legged hooker

  15. I used to enjoy Larry Krueger but he has turned Gary's show into a sports version of Hannity. One second he's throwing out opinions off the top of his head and the next he's doing a commercial for some trinket. At times, you don't know what your listening to, but it makes the show sound like one long commercial. It also doesn't help that he keeps passing himself off as a football expert who is then mysteriously silent when actual experts (like Todd Husak this week) come on and contradict what he just said. Like I said, I used to enjoy Larry, but he just seems like some bloated, unprepared, cash-grab version of himself.

PS Larry - do you want to defend Kap for his three 4th quarter turnovers in the 2014 NFC championship game? This was the moment you started to lose me.

  16. One prima donna who thinks shes better then she actually is isn't enough for KPIX? Now they need one in the morning?

Leila isn't a local and it shows. Mispronounces street names all the time. No credibility or appeal.

  17. KGO is lucky to have Robin Winston. She's an ultra-pro, rarely makes any mistakes on the air, (I've never heard one yet), is great to work with and seems to like what she does. But yeah, I think when you're cranking out 25-30 traffic reports or whatever it is that she has to crank out, it's gotta burn you out a bit. She should really switch over to TV full-time, but she seems like the radio gig.

  18. Lets take a look at KPIX's recent hirings:

    JACKIE WARD
    EMILY TURNER
    LEYLA GULEN?

Im sensing a very disturbing pattern.........

  19. A lot of those you entertainingly bash are SF celebs, like Don Sherwood long ago who made it as far as Chicago, before flopping out there. I think Jan Wahl is such a creature. Does she have any fans other than herself? Gross is Grossly a bore. But he must have an audience, otherwise? Back to Cheryl Jennings; I found her to have great class and grace, and she strikes me as genuine. I don't think she is an act.
KGO once had Gene Burns and Pete Wilson (was it Pete? the guy around noon), both the best talk show hosts you could ask for. Oh, did Gene spoil us! These locals at the moment are generally are so bad, Good grief, I ended up trying even Glen Beck. Savage has a brilliant mind, but me thinks you overlook how he distorts it to contort extreme and irrational positions aimed at his flock. And his relentless self-acclaiming tributes make my stomach turn. Not yours, Rich? Don't get too easily enamored.

  20. I think Gasia is very cute. Like Kim Kardashian before she had plastic surgery. I do not know what kind of body she has, so I cant comment about that.

  21. If they have a TV station in San Berdoo (something like channel 41) Leyla Gouhlin would be a shoe in - someplace to go after being kicked in the ass...

I was on the bubble watching KGO AM TV news but Gouhlin pushed me off. I would sometimes look to see if adorable Lisa was filling or Sue Hall who I respect as a hard worker was in for the Gouhl. You gotta admit KGO has a knack for finding hipsters for our increasingly hipster market (look at the pix while listening to iTunes on your phone).

If we get Gasia some miniskirts and leave the sound off she might be tolerable. I will comment no one has told the story of why Tori C left KTVU - I'd love to hear the real story along with the prospects for the long time anchors staying or going with foxification...

  22. To Gulen's credit, Loring is the bigger headache. The newsroom folks LOATHE her, primarily because she frequently doesn't know what she's doing and comes off extremely manic-depressive. Very hot and cold. Very unstable. You never know what you're going to get from her at any given moment. However, the rank and file do a ton of butt kissing to her face because they're afraid of getting canned due to Loring's relationship with Burton. As a result, Loring thinks she's loved and super popular and the morning newsroom folk continue to mill around pretending to be happy when they are in fact...very, very, VERY miserable.
