Bay Area TV News Stations: Pimping For Christmas Pictures

 PIMPING FOR CHRISTMAS PICTURES

This (Tuesday) morning, KTVU was asking viewers to "send in your favorite holiday photos --we'll post them on TV!" How thoughtful. KTVU is not the only Bay Area TV News station pimping for pictures. It's become a market-wide holiday tradition.

The reason KTVU and others are asking for your pictures is so they don't have to PAY their photographers and cameramen.

That's right, they're cheap SOBs.

If this sleazy practice weren't so comical, it would be downright serious business. And that's the key word, business. Budgetary cuts, newsroom slashes, reduction in staff--no wonder in order to get holiday pictures, local TV stations have to resort to asking viewers to send in FREE pictures. "Free", as in WE DON'T HAVE TO PAY YOU!

Cheap bastards.

  3. I think the main reason why stations ask viewers to send XMas pics is to lure them to watch their newscast....knowing that these folks will tune in just to see--and more importantly, to hear their name mentioned on-air.

    1. Exactly - in today's digital market, it's called "engagement."

That's the line of BS that management gives. I think Rich is right on the money here, there are x minutes to fill. If y minutes can be filled by free content, they'll only have to pay staff for
      x - y minutes.

  5. I never got paid for sending in my crayon drawlings to Miss Nancy on Romper Room.

KTVU was grooming us all this time.

  6. This type of plea to customers has been ongoing for sometime. For rain pics, temp pics, falling leaf pics - depending of the season. I considered it begging for free fluff fillers. Just another inane gimmick.
