Saturday 415 Media Breakfast; CNN on KPIX Ayers; Julie Haener's Cough Fits; Radnich-KNBR Union Factoid

 SATURDAY BREAKFAST CONVERSATION

*CNN is indeed looking seriously at KPIX ace reporter and femme fatale, Christin Ayers. Just a matter of time before they decide to make her an offer she can't refuse. Or not.

*Speaking of PIX, they are, yes, that desperate to leak rumor of a Dana King-Ken Bastida reunion. I'd love it to come to fruition but I don't think PIX has the money and I'm quite sure that King wants nothing to do with sitting behind the desk again. Oh, and this is my opinion: It wasn't so much King wanting to split the biz yearning to perform art and pottery so much as having to work for the boss. A certain boss.

*Did anyone notice KTVU's Julie Haener multiple times hacking-cough episodes? On-Air. I can feel your pain, Jules, I've been trying to get rid of that cough for weeks now, it's the worst.

*Ronn Owens: At several points last week I didn't recognize his voice. I hope you feel better Ronn, no jokes.

*The thing about Garry Radnich (which you'll only read here) is the fact that almost every sports TV anchor in town can't stand him. They won't say because it serves no purpose. I will.

*I don't doubt Kate Scott knows her sports; she just never says anything of significance and when she tries, it comes off as amateurish and contrived. Her frequent "Nobody cares"--which she ripped off from Radnich --is hallow and Radnich, to his credit, finally had enough with it on Thursday and told her to can it.

Scott is the benefactor of happening to be 31, blond, slightly attractive and ohhhh, gay. Too bad she's d-league content and a glass of milk and white toast substance. That's right, I said it.

*KPIX won't say it but I will: With daily revolving anchors and no identity it's no wonder that they're tanking in the ratings. Plus, the year and one-month VDLC experiment is a certified dud. So is "NightBeat", which continues to bleed red ink and is toxic to humans.

*Radnich can hate the union as much as he wants to but when the KNBR board ops and producers he talks to and banters with on the air are making about 15 bucks there's something wrong there. Of course that hurt wouldn't apply to Raddy's $400K salary and Bentley medical plan. Everyone has a right to live.

*Many, many thanks to all of you who have donated not just once but multiple times. Thanks for your incredible support. ALL of you.

  1. I have and will continue to donate, small amounts, with the intent to pay "the bills".
Beyond that, your so called "LIVE", if readership is so high as you say, banner residuals should be engaged.

    All my best.

BTW, thanks for banning Stan, now lets ban Christine. She's pictured in Webster's dictionary next to the word, pseudointellectual. What a bore she is.

    1. I thought Christine was a top-notch always-busy workmen's comp lawyer in Sacto.; how could she possibly have time for grammar correction & assinine blog comments?

    2. She's now in the legal-beagle world after she got hit by a car with a colleague or two. She did elder law in Sacto. She was also on Letterman thirty years ago, failed on a CBS sports show in the 1970s because she didn't like her hair dyed blond and she ultimately lost a multi-court lawsuit in the midwest. She wrote a book about it.

  2. Kate Scott is attractive in comparison to a massively overweight acne ridden beast with a bagworthy face perhaps, but overall, she's not actually attractive.

And D-league content is a compliment to her, she's TERRIBLE! And when I hear her on the advertisements, I change the channel and now I think "Nobody cares!!!!"

  3. Two thoughts for Rich's Blog - 1) I know how fortunate I am to read Bay Media information I can't get anywhere else - austerity measures, unfortunately, still continue to get the better of me, so I can't donate and must be very careful with my money; 2) Notice that Rich said Almost Every Sports Anchor can't stand Radnich. PIX's DOD is not one of them - still sounds like a Raddy protégé after all these years, even after two-three recent weeks fishing away from the station. It does grate, but thanks to CBS' continuingly phenomenal success, it doesn't faze PIX.

  4. Remember when cities had 3 and 4 newspapers?

Well it's time to thin the TV Herd.

If ESPN can lose 3 million subscribers last year, just guess how local news is being hit.

CBS is in the middle of some serious cutbacks in both tv and radio. The "rumor" you hear may be true...a hail mary before a slow and painful death.

Topless anchors is the only answer, both male and female. KPIX should be preparing a FCC waiver to make it possible.

  5. Board ops making $15 per hour...

    What are they complaining about?

Seriously that's damm good for a board op.

    1. For SF? You can't live in a cardboard box for that.

I don't expect them to make enough scratch to have a cliffside house, but Starbucks workers make that much. Or more.

  6. On the subject of PIX...

In recent weeks, Liz Cook seems to be improving. More continuity and fewer mistakes, and more confidence (at least during the telecasts that I have watched). Perhaps the upcoming delivery situation is helping her frame of mind while she is delivering the news?!

    1. Not a Liz Cook fan but I have to admit she has improved quite a bit this year. How long did they sign VDLC up for 2 or 3 yrs?

    2. 2 years is the standard for unproven local talent tv contracts. If she shines she can maybe re-up for 3years.

  7. I actually think you have it COMPLETELY backward with Kate Scott and I have absolutely no reason to care.

It seems to me Radnich is just a joke. He provides so little in the entertainment category it's laughable. He really just seems like that weird Uncle-type you'd want to avoid. Then there's Larry, who doesn't seem to know a single thing about the world if it doesn't involve someone throwing or catching a ball. I guess that's fine because after all it is sports radio, but when someone is seemingly vacant to the rest of the world it really makes for an uninteresting show. And that's what Gary and Larry is: an extremely uninteresting show.

Then you have Kate who is seemingly intelligent, but you can tell she's just exhausted by the lameness of Gary's humor and Larry's inability to be interesting. When Gary is dismissive of everything it seems she just resigns herself to either making fun of him, or not giving a crap about what they're doing.

But as far as I'm concerned she is the least uninteresting aspect of that show and station.

    1. If you'd listen, you'd have heard Kruger making comments about teachers not being paid enough, and a lot of other comments that shows he knows about life outside of sports.

Radnich, though pompous and apparently not civil with his parking, is still entertaining on radio, and still can do great interviews.

Kate Scott always tries to focus things on her which is bad enough (I don't listen to the show for her), but worse, she will pull out the "nobody cares" routine on interesting topics on a regular basis. She is the WORST part of that show by a long way!!! (I even prefer commercials to her "contributions", so long as she's not the one selling something...)

    2. I find the entire show boring and lame. In fact the station is the worst programmed major market sports station I've ever heard. A bunch of boring cheerleader types. Every time I turn on Tolbert he's talking abstractly about nonsense I don't care about. Rod Brooks is awful. Gary and Larry boring. Just terrible. If not for the teams that station would be in the gutter.

  8. I enjoyed Dibley's kids doing "Nobody Cares" 10 years ago more than I do Kate's current version. Kate comes across as kind of mean-spirited and she doesn't back it up with anything interesting of her own. She seems better suited to just reading scores as opposed to being a "personality."
