Thursday Coffee Break; Who Would Want To Be KGO Radio ND; Talk Format Likely; KTVU New 'Sports Wrap'

 Thursday Coffee Pause

*In the immediate aftermath of Debs Munroe about-to-exit KGO Radio the question now is who will take over. Who would want this thankless gig knowing there's no highlight and eventual disappointment --all of that said, someone will take the position, however mired in mediocrity and uncertainty.

*Talk is now rampant that news will be pushed aside and that a combo talk--local and syndicated is on the horizon.

We agree.

*We neglected to mention that KTVU has added a new 10 PM Sports Wrap show that debuted last week. The show will air every Sunday night at 11 PM.

*At its peak, KGO Radio took in more than $50M in gross revenue. This year, they'll be lucky to fetch $1M. Go figure.

*Add KGO: What was KGO Radio's rank at the time of the format change in 2011? #4 --now, it's #24. Nothing else needs to be said...except Ronn Owens said "we're going to be great and you're really going to like this new format!" --The Voice of Reason at his best.

    1. Assuming the role of KGO Radio ND is like assuming the job of Morale Director on the Titanic; boy, are you screwed. Or, as Gavin Newsom recently said upon entering a Tenderloin elevator, "Goddam, who shit in here?!?"

  2. The Dickeys are bean counters.

Beancounters never create anything. They destroy.

They looked at the expense column and wanted to cut. However they lost sight of the product.

Lawyers and MBAs are ruining this country

    1. Large corporations, their lobbyists, and politicians are held harmless? Tunnel vision at it's finest.

There's nothing illegal or immoral about being bad at business. One company's failure is another's opportunity. Using local talent as apposed to syndicated is a death sentence.

  3. It is amazing how the Dickheads keep their jobs. They took a station billing over $30million per year and diminished the billing by more than $29million yet they have the nerve to give ultimatums to current employees. White privilege and incompetence at its ugliest.

    Pretty damn funny, actually.

    Late 2011:
"We're #4 in the market and that's not good enough! We'll move to an all-news format to turn things around."

    Mid 2013:
"We're #16 in the market and that's not good enough! We'll move to a hybrid news-talk format to turn things around."

    Mid2015:
"We're #24 in the market and that's not good enough! We'll move to a talk format to turn things around."

Dickeys, do you see a trajectory here?

    1. They're not going to turn ANYTHING around, as long as they keep employing “talent“ like drex!

  5. KTVU should have been doing a sports wrap/prep sports show long ago.

Every other major market has been doing them for years. No doubt Ibanez and Fonzi are being "forced" to do the show.

  7. I've seen Matt Steinmetz do special Warrior segments with Sal Castaneda. I can see as Sal talks, Matt's brain thinking "Why am I here listening to traffic boy tell me about basketball?"
I might be projecting a little on that. Or,dead on accurate.

  8. So that's what the Fox brain trust has been doing...planning and launching a new "Sports Wrap" highlight show after the 10pm news....must be the reason they have for the second consecutive month, put off contract negotiations with one of their unions. Just a little more stalling until new equipment is installed, and poof!!!! Staff cuts!!!

    1. There are a few openings at KRON.

Besides, all the money the union employees have paid in dues should be sitting in a big pile at the union HQ. Thay money is the bankroll for any strike or lockout that may happen.

Unless the union gave it away to the political parties of their choice.

Tell the union to "step up" like they promised.

    2. Anon at 8:17am...KRON...shows how little you know....and yes, the union should man up deliver...but they never do...yea their literature is pro-dem, but their actions when push comes to shove are anything but......the union leaders are usually dining with the management of the stations....the toilet clogging corpulent republicans who love hand outs of the corporate variety.

I remember that I came to this country in 1985 and was amazed at the quantity and variety of radio stations. Sadly they are all gone. This country is getting poorer in many ways

    and just call me WSM

  11. Why isn't anybody at Cumulus upset that as soon as they got control of KGO, they drove it into the ground? Are they so dysfunctional that nobody's noticed the drop in revenue?

    1. Spencer Hughes has been the steady fill in, for several weeks now, every once in awhile someone else has sat in, nobody interesting or of substance. Miss John Rothmann, but he is never heard from anymore, does Gil even have him on Monday nights to talk politics? Don't hold your breath that the program director at 910 will choose somebody interesting and intelligent. He seem to just want bland milk toast, but if you have listened to him and Joel on their show, you will understand why.

  15. New on KTVU Mornings on 2: "Sal's Traffic Jams." Sal Castaneda takes requests and plays favorite songs. Of course only about 15-20 seconds of the song is heard, with Sal talking up the intro rock-jock style. Seriously.

    1. Brilliant! I bet Sal has decent talk-up skills. And, as I understand it, if you play less than 30 seconds of a song no royalties are due!
