  1. Are the people that call in to KGO and say how much they like a host or how it is great to have talk radio back on KGO being bribed by the call screeners? "if you say so and so is great we'll give you some sweetjack coupons".

"It's a different kind of talk" they got that part right, at least

    1. I don't think it's reached that level yet but there are "professional" talk sshow callers --usually working for political people/parties that go on the air and talk about their man/woman/party etc. Happens all the time in many cities.

  2. Two or three weeks ago I believe I heard Chip Franklin drop an s bomb live on the air in a segment with a comedian buddy of his. Is that still against the FCC rules? What are the repercussions?

    1. The FCC used to go after such and such but the s word although dirty isn't the same as an F bomb...even at that FCC is pretty much incognito these days...

Repercussion? fines usually-- depends on the issues; what was said, etc.

  3. What was your take on the reaction of some of the local sports talking heads, most notably 49ers broadcaster Tim Ryan, to the Chris Borland retirement?

    1. I'm a big fan of Tim Ryan but I thought his "quit" comment was ill-advised and I would bet if he rethought it might use different language.

    2. Especially for someone who only played three years himself. I'd like to see Ryan's rookie stats against Borland's. Like Borland, Ryan was a great college player, but I bet Borland would've been a much better pro player than Ryan had been if Borland continued playing.

      Delete
    3. I had to look it up. According to pro-football-reference.com, Ryan had 0 tackles in four years while Borland had 84 in his first.

      Delete
    4. I think he was going for more "resigned" than "quit"

      Delete
    5. Ann Killion sent out a poorly-worded, totally out-of-context tweet that made it sound like Ryan was criticizing Borland for quitting. If you'd have listened to the interview, you'd have heard that Ryan was very understanding of what Borland did.

If Ryan should be criticized for anything, it would be for doing that interview with KNBR while he was driving a car.

  4. Whatever happened to KTVU Reporter Patti Lee? I haven't seen her on the air in quite a while. Also since the beginning of 2015 I have not seen John Fowler either. Fowler was one of the veteran KTVU reporters management wanted to get rid of. Keep up the great work Rich.

    1. Fowler is still there--could be that he's on vacation. Lee, I have no idea but I'll check around.

    2. I'm pretty sure Lee was/is just a daily hire, meaning a freelancer. I've worked with her, though, at other stations, and always liked her a lot.

The good ones never get hired f/t. What's up with that?

  5. What happened to the KGO podcasts?? the most current is from March 4th?? The Seven Day Archive is gone too?? thanks

    1. I saw the same thing--I'll assume it's because of their move but I'm not sure.

  6. Rich re: two of your all-time 'favorites' Murph & Mac; since the big move a lot of what they have talked about - for weeks - is how they 'lost' the stingers, beds, sounders basically all of the production library ( including Paulie's "alleged songs") If, in the days of tactile media (i.e. carts or CD's), those elements would be physically moved, then, in the present of digital storage why would these elements go missing/trickle out a little at a time? KNBR makes it sound as though they had to skip town in the middle of the night...thanks for your time

  7. What do you think the long-term prospects are that we, the American public, will ever wrest our TV/radio airwaves back from the filthy-rich, egotistical, politically conservative plutocrats, like the Dickey brothers, who now seem to totally control those airwaves?

We're rapidly losing the representative democracy that I grew up in, decades ago.

    1. Slim and none, Del. The FCC is useless --long ago became irrelevant. Sad times we are living in.

  8. How come you don't publish comments that question your opinions, even when they are polite and thoughtful?

Are you uncomfortable with diverging viewpoints?

    ReplyDelete

    1. As I've said before this is MY blog therefore I control the letters--yes, it's a dictatorship--not a democracy. Most letters that are counter to my opinion get printed, some of the personal crap doesn't and that's all on me.

I don't mind getting ripped but I'm not going to let trolls zap me in my own place. Pretty simple.

      Delete
    2. You say that you don't print personal crap but that was not the question.

The question is why you don't publish polite, NON-PERSONAL, divergent opinions. It's understandable that you wouldn't publish insulting junk. But you also ignore opinions that conflict with your own.

If you only publish responses from people who agree with you, aren't you presenting a distorted view of how your readers are responding to your opinions.

    3. I've said my peace and will leave it at that. If you feel really, really bad about it, then maybe this is not the site for you and I'm not going to put you through agony.

Here's a thought: why don't you just read the posts and enjoy. Or don't.

  9. I know your a Raider fan but wanted to know your thoughts on what is going on with the niners in terms of the transactions that are going on down there? York getting rid of a good HC, hiring a new coach with no NFL HC experience, players retiring and basically getting the majority of the fanbase upset.
You think Jed York basically does not know how to run a NFL team?

    1. Certainly the Harbaugh situation could have been handled a whole lot better and more professionally- I think many of the fans feel like they were hoodwinked and that may linger if they lose next year and beyond...Harbaugh is a tough cookie to deal with --from inside the organization but you, the fans, deserve better especially those price tags on the tickets.

Jed York? This hasn't been his finest hour --is he capable of running an NFL team? On the business side, yes, football--we'll see.

  10. The Paper Tiger aka FCC only prosecutes cases of whites insulting blacks in a racist manner, or being thought to have intended such an insult. If it's the reverse, blacks insulting whites in a racist manner, the FCC goes mute and invisible once again, like the Liberal's Tool of Harassment it has become. Everyone knows I'm correct on this.

    1. And now everyone knows you're a kook, too.

    2. Interesting. Can you provide some examples where the FCC did this?
      --thanks

      Delete
    3. Sorry to pop your delusion, but the FCC doesn't prosecute anyone. It is not law enforcement. It does (in theory) have an enforcement bureau that goes after people or companies that break the regulations, but it's only an administrative law proceeding. Anything that rises to the level of criminality, breaking of actual law (i.e., actions which would be felonies or misdemeanors) gets referred to the Department of Justice.

Or are you one of those shmendriks who attempts to put race and politics in every subject?

  11. We've all seen lots of pledge stuff on KQED at times. I'm curious whether much of it is just paid infomercials or really a pledge. Do the producers of those programs "pay" for being included in pledge drives? I'm thinking it's an infomercial if it's a straight purchase of time, with maybe a bonus payment to KQED based on sales that result. I'm thinking that those T.J. Libinsky 1950's & 1960's Oldies Music programs are probably really just infomercials sort of gussied-up to look like pledge drives pieces. What's your take on that sort of stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  12. No, it's all legit as far as I know --KQED has been doing pledge breaks for years. I actually don't mind them I'm so used to them and I do a pledge break every now and then.

  13. What do you think the chances would be that we'd ever see a return of a mixed format AM station? Say, with some rock oldies, one or two talk shows, and then maybe some sports(maybe the Raiders or A's)? It would appear that there's not enough audience for another all-sports or all-talk station, but someone creative enough might be able to pull off a hybrid like this. Older listeners would certainly feel comfortable with it as they'd remember when KSFO, KNBR, and others did that. I doubt KGO'd consider it, but if KSFO is indeed for sale, that's be an opening,

    1. No one listens to AM for music let alone anything else --maybe talk-radio but the days of the old KNBR/KGO are pretty much over.

  14. How are the rating on the new BAD BAD BAD live 105 morning show? I find it very unfunny and forced.

    1. Ratings come out in two weeks--I listened once and turned to KCSM where I'm frequently hovering.

  15. Why do you think Michael Zwirling sticks with stale right wing hosts such as Georgia and Charles Freedman on KSCO? This is a very liberal area. You'd think he would put on a decent liberal talk show host to broaden his audience. No wonder he relies on multi level marketing sales of vitamins to finance the operation. I know a ton of local folks who don't even bother tuning in. Why would they? To hear Freedman and Georgia regurgitate the same crap Limbaugh spewed for three hours earlier in the day?
    Your thoughts.

  16. Can you PLEASE explain the rationale behind the "shrieking lady" car commercials on KGO and KKSF? We all immediately turn the radio off and sometimes don't come back. I hit a button and go to KQED and if it's an interesting show, I stay there? Who gains if we're turning the radio off? The sponsor? The station? I simply don't understand the rationale. Please.

  17. I have a question, thank you.
If you can put down the alcohol for a few minutes and answer the question honestly.
Why all this preoccupation with Veronica De La Cruz?

  18. Anon 4:36 - I agree completely and do the exact same thing. I dive for the radio and hit the KQED, KCSM, or KPFA buttons. Most of time I stay there.
