415 Media: Angie Coiro Splitting From KGO Radio; Last Show Sunday; Paid/Canned Syndicated Shows Forces Out Respected Talker

Angie Coiro will be broadcasting her last show on KGO Radio Sunday afternoon. Coiro was awarded the 10-1 PM weekend program late last year but her time element has been interrupted by paid syndicated financial shows that have recently begun piling up on KGO's weekend schedule.

Coiro, reached by e-mail, confirmed to me that she will do her last show on Sunday. She didn't want to go into detail as to why she decided to split although it was well known among local broadcast sources that KGO/Cumulus' decision to begin its paid syndicated shows was a major factor in her decision.

Too bad some of the other KGO talk hosts didn't share some of Coiro's personal and professional ethics.

Coiro, who mixes news-talk and human-interest stories, is widely regarded as one of the most respected and up-and-coming broadcasters.

She will start new podcasts March 1 at http://indeepradio.com/

  1. I worked with Angie at Metro in SF back in the '90s and she was always great. It's sad to see to see this happen, but also not surprising. I think podcasting is where all the real talk talent is going to go, but how one tries to squeeze even beer money out of it is the question.

    1. "back in the 90s" contrasts a little with Rich's "up and coming." Seems like she's actually back out the door and not going anywhere.

Get it into your thick skulls that liberal women won't succeed in talk radio and you can say the same for most liberal men.

    2. I’m more green (as in $$) than I am conservative, and I don’t think you can make such a blanket statement. While there are many markets where what you say is true, if there is any market in American where that’s not the case, it is San Francisco (there are some others as well). It’s important to tailor the hosts for the market. The most important thing is that she does good radio, and she is a personality who many here can connect with. Look at the many years of success the late Lynn Samuels had in New York, for example. She was a female liberal who did compelling radio.

  2. So disappointed about Angie. Good for her!

Could someone tell me how paid advertising programs are going to attract the younger demographic? Especially the "how to retire" programs.

Even Michael Finney seems to be absent at 1:16 pm, unless there is a college basketball game.

    There are no words.

    1. KGO / Cumulus isn't selling young demos, no matter what they say. They can't. Young people don't listen to AM radio. And they don't listen to piss poor radio at that. These companies that buy time don't pay highest rates, but they do buy regularly week to week and they pay on time, usually. Audience doesn't matter - its the 50,000 watts and the market. Making $3000 an hour in a time period that makes less than a third of that is better than nothing. Plus, it keeps those expenses down at someone else's cost.

  3. So,that's the end of KGO radio those hours. Its down to KCBS and various other car radio presets.
Why would anybody spend time listening to infomercials? Vitamin supplements don't work, even IF they have what they claim to have, and recent studie's showed 90% of them have none or little of the bottle claims. On top of all previous studies that showed that even IF they have- they still don't work!.
And!..House Flipping at no risk? Waking up in the morning is a risk!..
Eat right, work hard, exercise, save, know the right people. There,I just solved all yer problems.
One more, don't get old. Its overrated.

  4. Speaking of vitamin ads anybody know what happened to Dave michaels over on KSCO? He was hyping all the vitamin sales for several weeks then suddenly nothing.
Rich, any news on MZ buying up an SF station as reported here last year? I heard he was in SF again all last week. Did you lunch with him? Bring back Lieberman live please.

    1. Dave is still pitching vitamin supplements from the KSCO garage as of yesterday. MZ is an idiot. Called his "friend", a doctor a "prick" on air a couple of times yesterday and made Bill Wattenberg's son, Eric, sound like an idiot on medical coverage. MZ needs to sell KSCO and that other dump he has. MZ is in no position to buy a station in SF to make it successful and has no leanings to. Calling your guests a "prick" and reading complaints about doing so doesn't get it done The worst broadcaster on the peninsula with the worst radio station. KSCO can't run on ego and vitamin supplements alone. Maybe he needs to be Karel in. I hear he should be pounding the streets soon. Entertainer my ass. Also, he slapped Pat Thurston down last night for "having a one topic hour. The powers that be don't want us to do that and she was told." He is jealous because she was talking the Oscars for an hour just before he did. What an idiot.

    2. Karel's boo-hooing about filing for bankruptcy every five minutes is getting old. It's everyone's fault but his. If he was so hot, he'd have money being a red carpet start instead of a low rated clown creep. $900 in the bank, gone, he says and 25% of his $4400 KGO paycheck docked as the bankruptcy gets underway. What a queer dolt.

  5. And I think Michael Finney's show has been cut to 2 hours - now starts at 2PM. This happened last week. This week the show is only one hour, 2-3pm because of Cal basketball. He sounded a little disgusted last week when the financial guy got two hours (even though the schedule says 12-1pm). I didn't hear the beginning of this weeks show but will listen to the archive or podcast when it's available to see if he announced a permanent change.

  6. Never mind that she's an excellent talk show host, especially for the Bay Area, that quick buck is there. Gimme gimme. If no one listens, they don't feel that it's their problem (morons).

  7. Well we saw this coming so it isn't a surprise. It's no surprise that the total dumb fucks that run KGO would do this either. Now it looks like Michael Finney is on the bump spot I would say. I have to also think John Hamilton will soon be able to play golf all Sunday morning too.

I like Angie a lot and will miss her. I think she is one of the best hosts in the Bay Area. I will give her podcasts a try.

@3:05 PM Why don't you and all your stupid teatard right wing friends just leave Northern California. Please make it a one way ticket to some place you and your kind will fit right in. Like Oklahoma or Alabama.

  8. The worst thing about all of this is some moron program director named Randall Bloomquist hired Angie while he was telling the sales department to sell the weekends. I don't know if he was upfront about it to Angie but considering he's a completely dishonest wife-cheat and office philanderer I doubt he did. No show is safe on KGO and no employee is either.

  9. And this is why I have Sirius XM

  10. You are probably right, there is certainly no week end radio left to speak of. Angie is not on this morning, instead it is paid programming about green tea and etc. boring, boring, I take vitamins and supplements, but I'll be damned if I'm going to listen for an hour, even half an hour, so paid advertising about said supplements. KSFO has some guy on with a horrible voice screaming about mortgages. This is an outrage that both of these stations has fallen that low.

  11. Thanks for the kind words here. I appreciate it.

I did not know when I first arrived that the weekends were up for sale. But that generation of management has moved along, and I've been treated with complete integrity by current local management.

Small corrections: the In Deep radio show and podcast resumes recording March 18th, at a live Peninsula venue that I'm not free to specify yet. We'll record two hours weekly, and it appears our previous radio stations in Santa Fe, Redding, and our Washington DC flagship will pick us up again, while Boulder CO is a likely new carrier.

We're in negotiation for a San Francisco station, but it appears that will take a while.

As for the website: we're just putting it up and hadn't expected it to go public so quickly. Like having guests show up while laundry's all over the place and the cat litter unscooped. ;) Please accept the site you're seeing as a work in progress, a repository for the show's 2011-2013 archive while we bring it up to speed. By the time the show debuts again, it'll be all shiny.

  12. Angie is gone! Good riddance! Another liberal lunatic bites the dust. And Michael Finney, who is supposed to be a CONSUMER reporter, has been contaminating the air waves more & more with his liberal opinions & views. It appears that liberal lunacy is on it’s way out, even at KGO, or should I say GAY-GO, and the liberal lunatic capital of the world, San Francisco. The lead liberal lunatics in the White House will be gone soon also. It’s about time! And there’s nothing more should be said about Karel. In fact, the less said about him, the better. Just when you think this loser has hit rock bottom, he always seems to find a new low to sink to. Maybe there’s hope for KGO yet!

    1. Think you can parse the difference between "bites the dust" and "resumes hosting a show syndicated to five cities"? She posted right above you.

      Reading is FUN!-damental.

    2. @12:32 PM: If you hate "the liberal lunatic capital of the world San Francisco" so much, why the hell don't you GET OUT, you homophobic jackass? If you have an objection to a host, attack the issue, not the fact that they're gay. Unless maybe you're trying to repress something?

    3. 12:35: Agreed.

Angie, the markets you mentioned are ones where you would likely play well. Also, there’s Seattle and Portland for large markets (besides DC) to look at, in addition to here. Best wishes for success.
And 12:32 you make it really difficult for calm conservatives such as myself and others to make a case that we’re mostly reasonable and objective. There are calm liberals who also want a reasoned discourse with us, but blind rage also blinds clear thinking, and you have succeeded in being quite unreasonable with some of your comments. All those people you mention have a good market here.

  13. She's pretty much just a slightly moderate version of the far-left Pat Thurston. Folks like her are almost like clones of one another. They almost look the same. Local radio doesn't need more folks like her, as the knee-jerk leftist types will never attract much of an audience. Just the way it is.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 12:32 and 2:54 you don't believe in a diversity of opinions I gather? Isn't conservatives all about the free market, if a Angie, Pat, John Rothmann or Michael Finney gets ratings, shouldn't they be on the air? How is Angie more of a lunatic than Michael Savage or Mark Levin, just because you don't agree with those views, does that mean they should not be heard. I have never even suggested that Savage, Rush or Levin should not be on the air, just because I don't like their views. I don't care for Karel, but that has nothing to do with his liberal views, I just don't care for his show. Angie, Pat Thurston other liberals are not knee jerk leftist types, they are intelligent hosts, who have different points of view. 12:32 you sound like you would rather live in a right wing dictatorship, where only one view (yours) is being heard. You sound afraid of different opinions, rather than embracing them, which is what democracy is all about. To 2:54 Sean Hannity, Mark Levin sounds like knee jerk right wing types to me. The 2 of you (12:32 and 2:54) don't seem to be able to comprehend a diversity of opinions, how small minded of you. However, reading your blog does not give me the impression we are dealing with intelligent life here. Here is a novel idea, don't like left wing talk show host, TURN THE DIAL, listen to Sean, Savage, Rush others, you have more choices than those of us on the left, so what are you complaining about?

  15. Angie is filling in for Ed Baxter on Talk 910 this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 910 has been a bit of talk heaven with Ed Baxter being out, not that I don't like him, I do, liked him a lot of KGO, just don't care for his and Gil's format on 910. The fill ins has been John Rothman (once or twice) David Weintraub and now Angie Coiro, Rosie Allen filled in as well, and with John being on with Ronn on President's day, there has been more decent talk shows to listen to than in a long time, which is not saying much. Only had a chance to hear Angie a little bit, but she mentioned she will be on a Bay Area station and a few others starting in the next month and so, anyone interested check out her website.

  18. Rich, am I understanding this correctly? The few remaining hosts on KGO have to pay Cumulus in order to have their programs continue airing?
