Are you a Team KNBR member? I just found my fan club card/credit card they used to send out in the early 2000s.
ReplyDeleteNo, but thanks for asking.
DeletePersonality aside, do you think Tori Campbell was attractive a few years back?
ReplyDeleteYeah, at one point I thought she was actually Kim Bassinger.
DeleteHow drunk were you?
Delete(Hey, psst, I was kidding.)
Deletedo you think that the morning show on the game 95.7 is going to last?
ReplyDeleteSure, it's on the 90-day watch officially which is about SOP on The Game's "Morning Show" business model.
DeleteDo you find it difficult to actually pay attention to anything Jacqueline Bennett says in her weather report? After staring at her profile I find that I can't remember a thing she just said
ReplyDeleteYeah George, it's a perplexing situation--she's devoid of personality and charm, I wonder why she's so popular, wait a minute...
DeleteEnjoy her while you can, Jan 28 is her last day on KRON.
What is Dan Dibley up to now? Last time I heard him was on Wheel of Fortune where he won a few grand.. Does he still have a radio job?
ReplyDeleteHe does fill-in traffic reports for KCBS last I checked but have not heard him for some time.
DeleteHe’s still there which is a plus for those of us who found his sports commentary annoying and dreadful. Too bad there isn’t a traffic reporter opening for Bob Fitzgerald.
DeleteWhat are five pressing issues in 2015 for Bay Area media? Can you separate them by radio, TV and newspaper? Just want to see your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot to answer but I'll do my best --1. KGO Radio's direction: in spite of its corporate incompetence it's still 50K watts and dial-worthy although it gets worse by the day...Haven't seen this type of butcher ever...2. KFOG: much like KGO, only FM and still carrying considerable, albeit waning interest from its diminishing listeners. 3. KQED: there's a lot of internal troubles at the local PBS outlet, more on radio than TV --rancor galore. 4. The future of the SF Chronicle. It has deep pockets in Hearst ownership but if it continues to bleed the millions of dollars that those in the know say it's bleeding, then ultimately, there's a end point. Finally, 5. on a sports radio note, the future of 95.7 FM, "The Game". Entercom's SF radio station is barely holding down a 1 rating. I've been saying for months that there HAS to be a management shake-up. If the Raiders and/or the A's leave them, somebody's gotta go.
DeleteWhere did your salary information from a few days ago come from?
ReplyDeleteIndustry source that gave me the information and agent familiar with market compensation.
DeleteIn a battle of former KRON 4 weather babes. Who would win in a knife fight between Jacqueline Bennett vs Evelyn Taft?
ReplyDeleteTaft, not even close.
DeleteIs 95.7's decision to ignore all college sports + hockey, a call from the PD or are a majority of the hosts clueless?
ReplyDeleteProbably from the PD--as much as I respect your passion, college sports here is a tough sell, especially on talk-radio. Hockey too. I know the Sharks sell out virtually all home games but there's simply not enough interest. Plain and simple. No bias. And both Cal and Stanford have to have great years just to elicit a drop of interest--Bay Area isn't a college sports market, that's just the facts.
Deletebut they are a news outlet. Would KRON ignore fires around the Bay Area to talk about the bigger fire in New York City? or would they talk about local fires and then mention NYC?
DeleteNo one expects 4 hours of college hoops, football and sharks talk, but if KNBR can update people on the scores, etc., why can't 95.7?
This is not a hockey area, and never will be. Even KNBR hardly talks about it, at least not until the playoffs. And keep in mind that, while the Sharks do draw well, San Jose would fill an arena for tractor pulls if someone told them it was a major league sport.
Delete"San Jose would fill an arena for tractor pulls if someone told them it was a major league sport."
DeleteCongrats on typing one of those most ignorant statements ever. As for this not being a "hockey area", San Jose just happens to be home to the biggest hockey rink facility west of the Mississippi. And Sharks Ice has plans to expand. But yeah, this isn't a hockey area.
How do you sleep at night after posting the salaries of people on a public forum? Have you ever heard of the word "privacy"?
ReplyDeleteYeah, and maybe you shouldn't spit outside your car window too ..ever heard of Matt Lauer's salary? You can get it by going on the Internet. Brian Williams too. And Ellen DeGeneres. And Diane Sawyer. And ...see PUBLIC people have no "privacy" in terms of things like their salary, I hate to ruin your life.
DeleteAnd if you work for the Federal Government anyone can go on a website and see your salary. How's that for privacy?
DeleteFunny how Rich never posts his salary, probably too embarrassed.
DeleteYou mean like YOU, Mr. "anonymous." I'm doing OK, not great, but I have more readers than ever.
DeleteAnd you? You're a coward. But have a nice day.
Hey Rich, how many paid subscribers? Perhaps you could make that public just like newspapers and magazines do.
DeleteNot nearly enough.
DeleteBut thanks for the notice, Nola
Why does KTVU field reporter, Tara Moriarty never use the names of the anchors, Tori and Dave, when addressing them? Alex Savidge and Janine DeLaVega will always say, "Yes, good morning TORI and DAVE, or back to you TORI and DAVE. Tara never does this. Is there some bad blood between Tara and the anchors? Is it just the latest example of the dysfunctional group at KTVU?
ReplyDeleteNah, everyone has their own personal style. Come to think of it, I like it when the reporter just gets to the story. Nobody cares about addressing the anchor, at least I don't.
DeleteDespite Moving to 900 Front, KRON News is Still Having Continued Major Technical Glitches Issues Especially on their 6-7pm Telecast. Just last Night at 6:30pm Grant Lodes Announced a Charles Clifford News Clip and instead first Maureen Kelly & then Haziq Mahoun Frozen Faces were shown. Also on Radnich's Sports Segment he started talking about "Deflagate" and then did his Don Rickles Act when the Clip never came on with the story. Why are these Major Technical Gaffes Continue to be so Commonly Prevalent on KRON News? Keep up the great work Rich!
ReplyDeleteKRON's new location has nothing to do with their technical issues --they just have chronic problems and apparently are incapable of correcting them, thus they will always be on the pariah status until further notice.
DeleteKRON is so cheap they probably buy their equipment at Best Buy and have it trouble-shooted by The Geek Squad.
DeleteActually Best Buy might even be too high-end. Radio Shack might be more like it.
I gotta disagree here. The technical glitches shot up 1000% once they moved. Master Control isn't in sync with the set because they keep coming out of commercial and Pam Moore is already talking. That NEVER happened before the move. On Christmas Day KRON ran 8 minutes of commercials and PSAs because of some studio glitch that prevented them resuming their morning newscast.
DeleteThey've knocked down a lot of the glitches but not all of them. But some issues can't be corrected because they aren't glitches. The interplay between Radnich and Moore has been terrible since they moved Gary to his standalone spot. On Fridays when his wife is on they have to drag out a stool for her to stand on because they no longer have a table to sit down at. Some of the camera angles are still bad, especially during segments when someone is sitting with Pam, for reasons I don't know since the cameras are moveable. I've gotten used to the weird lighting.
Much as I hated the old studio and the crappy upscaled TV picture doing lousy 720p, in a lot of ways things were better prior to the move than they are now. Some really bad decisions were made regarding the set and the setup. KRON will be paying for that for a while.
Yesterday KGO radio from 9:00 to 3:00 must of played the Wounded Warrior spot well over 100 times. During segments they played it and then a few times some lame music. Twice I heard it repeat 8 times in a row. I was listening via the Internet. What was going on with those fools?
ReplyDeleteLACK.OF.ADS.
DeleteI think the radio station has something to do with it.
What is up with Dan Noyes (KGO)? He's only on the air every couple of weeks with one of those investigation reports. Is he just a part-timer? Or does he fill up his day with sweeping the floor or catering to Dan Ashley?
ReplyDeleteNo, he's full-time and pretty damn good actually. Must-see TV and I'd like to see more of DN.
DeleteIf you played KGO Backwards would it make more sense? Ok real Question The Dicky's are smart and dripping number are not smart. What is Lew and Company's "End Game" for Bay Area Radio? Stations coming in at 45 don't make real money and would be hard to sell.
ReplyDeleteI don't have one clue figuring those guys out. They were born to a rich family and KILLED SF radio. Anything else, I'm not aware of.
DeleteDid you know that The GAME is ranked 3rd in the market with their primary demo of MEN 25-49? Why would you think they would make management changes with a ranking like that? The station is a cash cow.
ReplyDeleteI never said they're not making money --hell, even KGO makes $. It's just that The GAME has NO listeners and w/o Entercom's cash cow to subsidize it, it would be gone-- and when the Raiders and A's leave, it's TOAST.
Delete"Did you know that The GAME is ranked 3rd in the market with their primary demo of MEN 25-49?"
DeleteCare to provide proof of that assertion? Via stationratings.com, KGMZ ranks 25th in the market overall. Where's the documentation to back up your claim?
What are your thoughts on "deflategate?"
ReplyDeleteI'm already sick of it. CNN just had a "Breaking News" on deflategate this morning.
I think it's a legitimate story otherwise the network news wouldn't be covering it.
DeleteIf it has legs beyond next week I'd be surprised --but if the NFL tries to bury it they're in trouble.
Most of my radio listening is internet radio and I'm pretty sure it plays different ads than over the air. I seldom hear local spots. So you get a lot of repetition.
ReplyDeleteI’ve noticed on the KRON morning news that the traffic guy, George Rask (?), never appears to be on a regular schedule. Is he part-time, have another gig or some personal issue? Come to think of it, KRON seems to rotate their traffic and weather roster daily, so maybe it’s just the way they do business.
ReplyDeleteYes, all of the above basically.
DeleteYou seem to get a fair amount of comments by the Anonymous crowd about censorship. On average, how many comments aren’t posted-1 out of 10, 2 out of 10...?
ReplyDeleteDepends on the content ...many people who post anonymously may work in the biz and want confidentiality based on some things they post which is perfectly understandable --it's the ones who post personal attacks and hide behind their laptop I have no use for.
DeleteWhat about those of us who are both? ;-)
DeleteHave fun.
DeleteSip champagne while you're at it.
Just save some for me.
I post as Anonymous because it's faster than going through one of my accounts. That's my only excuse.
DeleteI think you should do a "real names" article similar to the salaries article. Just like actors a lot of the local anchors and media personalities have fake names. Is his real name Karel? No. Is Darya Folson really Darya Wojkowski? Mark Ibanez? Is it really Joaquin Guerrero? Is it really Rich Liberman or possible Rich Clooney? Inquiring minds want to know!
ReplyDeleteAnd who is Anonymous January 23, 2015 at 4:00 PM. We'd really like to know. Will s/he step out of the shadows. Many of us Anonymous folks are just a bunch of anonymous cowards, most are probably ashamed of what they post, I know I usually am.
DeleteWhy? So people can stalk them?
DeleteGood idea. Might be fun to hear how hypocritical some are.
DeleteThis is not a story. Karel is his given MIDDLE name. But, using air names was, for some reason, standard procedure in radio for decades. Sometimes it was done to "de-ethnic" someone or to create a character, almost everyone did it. I know a guy who used to work in major market radio in the mid west. His "real name" is John Meyers, a fine, generic name...but on-air for some reason he was Michael Scott...just a s generic...???...
DeleteRich, have you tried listening to the "Three Amigos" on the Game on Saturday morning? It is Hip-Hop sports talk. The worse I have ever heard. I believe one guy is a rapper and the other two won a contests to be on the show. Unlistenable.
ReplyDeletePlease.
DeleteI'd rather torture myself--I don't need that show.
This isn't Ask Rich Lieberman but Tell Rich Lieberman: Did you see KTVU 6:00 Fri Jan 23? They did a sports segment that showed clips of sports figures talking during the game but they overdubbed funny, cartoon-like voices. This went on for over a minute. This is what Fox is doing to "The Bay Area's News Station."
ReplyDeleteDuly noted.
DeleteThey ran it again at 10, and again the anchors chuckled and laughed like they were seeing it for the first time. Oh my God, KRON is starting to look good compared to KTVU...
DeleteI saw the same thing at 10. The same night that Klay Thompson had set an NBA scoring record for the Warriors. Unbelievable. I was wondering if KTVU was having technical problems, and needed to use that idiotic clip as filler.
DeleteWhat's happened to Mark Kreidler and Whitey Gleason, the former RIse Guys of 95.7 FM?
ReplyDeleteSacramento radio.
DeleteHave you heard that Whistling Noise? I hear it on 910 am and others at night. Improv Theater aka Pan Theater has been advertising upcoming classes and performances in the east bay. I'm one of those people with very sensitive hearing, and that annoying whistling throughout the radio commercial are driving me up the walls. I can hear the voltage when someone turns the TV on, even with the volume muted. I know, it's both a gift and a curse. Is this their first and only commercial? I sure hope not.
ReplyDeleteThe whistle is a problem for 910 stations nationwide. It occurs because of a heterodyne inside the radio, with the 910KHz incoming signal beating against the 2nd harmonic of an oscillator found inside your radio (that oscillator is at 455KHz). The difference between the two frequencies can be an audible signal that sounds like a whistle.
DeleteRIch...have you heard anything about KCBS news director Ed Cavagnaro retiring? A job opening for Director of News & Programming was just posted.
ReplyDeleteRich - A couple questions for you...#1 - Last week's KPIX 11:00 pm news had a rotating crew of anchors Veronica De La Cruz and Allen Martin one night, Elizabeth Cook and Brian Hackney (who also did weather) another night, just Ms. Cook alone last night with (Mr. Hackney on weather alone). Any insights as to what's up? Where's Ken Bastida?.... #2 - What's up at KFOG? Things seem to be changing. New morning show, no more Friday "all request" hour, etc. .... Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAs for PIX, There are these days, maybe you've heard of them, they're called VACATION days. People do take time off.
DeleteRich - How are the Comcast Sports Nets (Bay Area and California) doing? It seems like they have lots of overhead in terms of reporters/on-air personalities, but few people are watching those stations more than a couple of hours a night. Given the rights fees that they have to pay the teams - are they viable for the long-term or do you see them cutting back in the future?
ReplyDeleteKCBS News Director Ed Cavagnaro has announced his retirement effective in April. May go outside the station to fill the position.
ReplyDeletePerhaps he can join his old buddy Paul Hosley who got run out of KGO by Cumulus, along with Ron Escaraga a few years later. Oh, and I forget that they didn't have to get rid of poor Kevin Metheny who died before they could fire him. Maybe he was lucky?
ReplyDeleteCan someone please buy Brian Hackney, CBS anchor a large bottle of Visine, please!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous January 24, 2015 at 9:08 PM, your snarky reply to my question for Rich suggests it hit a chord or nerve. Indeed, I have heard of VACATION days, although I don't get many of them as a small business owner. Hopefully, the PIX crew enjoyed their time off.
ReplyDelete
