  1. I've heard that there will be a big KGO Radio staff meeting Thursday morning to discuss changes in the station's lineup.

What do you know about this?

    1. They always have staff meetings --I think they have more staff meetings than every Walmart in America combined.

That said, I'll check my KGO people as to whether this staff meeting is of anything of substance.

    1. Enough for Comcast to stick a few cameras in and provide them cheap programming instead of boring filler and infomercials.

      Delete
    2. Well we know Stan is watching, that's 1.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, we know Stan watches. Think he's listening to KNBR radio at the same time so he doesn't miss those small bits that don't make it onto Comcast.

Think Stan must nap during the afternoon so he's alert enough to pay attention to every minute of Radnich on KRON newscasts later in the day. Think he must record that so he can study Radnich's interaction with Pam Moore in slow-mo.

  3. Do you think that Comcast will be willing to modify the terms of their contract with the Sharks? And on the subject of the Sharks, do you have an assessment of Jamie Baker's work as color analyst on their telecasts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They, (Comcast), already have --remember, Comcast needs programming and sports affiliates is a part of that --Baker, I've not heard a lot of, but he's replacing Remenda and that's a load because Drew was incredibly popular--what little I've heard of Baker he's pretty good and has Randy Hahn beside him which never hurts.

      Delete
    2. Jamie is a straight a head analyst and Drew added a lot of flair to his analysis which I thought provided good entertainment. Randy seems more straight forward without Drew to me. I really enjoyed those 2 together and the telecasts seem a little duller. I think that is what the Sharks wanted. Maybe they thought the broadcasts needed to be more focused on the team itself?

      Delete
    3. I REALLY miss Drew. The chemistry between Randy and Drew made watching the Sharks a joy.

They now have them separated during home games with Jamie at the bench. Jamie does not seem to do analysis but more observation.
Brett Hedican analysis seems more informative. I feel like Jamie is afraid to say what we are thinking.

All I can guess is Drew said something in the back room that pissed off the coaches and they gave an ultimatum to Doug Wilson.

I have a great desire to listen to the Edmonton side of the broadcast when the Sharks play them just to listen to Drew again.

Are there any petitions out there?

    4. Baker is a sharks cheerleader. Exactly what they wanted when the fired Drew

    2. color as is if you met her how is she in person? How is her career path? She appears to be a very nice person. How did she get her start at KRON?

    3. I believe @8:43 is referring to her extremely pale skin. She makes Dracula look like a brother.

    5. I think she is hot! Pale skin no. She is a light complexion Blonde. If you traveled outside the city you would know northern europeans are very light complexion and blonde.

That's cause you idiots are used to fake ass tans.

My only question about Jacqueline is, real or enhanced?

      Delete
    6. Jackie was not as ghostly pale as she is now. She's Nusferatu pale now. I believe she's enhanced. The perk on that rack points to double D bolt ons. Nice!

  5. What happened to Janine De La Vega? She (was)is the daily South Bay MO2 field reporter on KTVU. She wasn't very good but, at least, consistent. Replaced by Cara Lin perhaps?

  6. Why do you censor so many posts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You call it "censor"--I call it editing and moderating --I try to get all comments in but not ones that go off on their own MO or are merely making personal attacks without their name--in that case, yes, this is a dictatorship, not a democracy.

      Delete
    2. If you censor comments that "go off on their own MO or merely making personal attacks" why do you continually print comments from Stan? That makes no sense, that's all that he does.

      Delete
    3. Rich, you are being dishonest. You routinely censor comments that merely disagree with your opinion and are not personal attacks.

Can you kindly address that point or will you censor the question.

      Delete
    4. Amen 11:01. Rich routinely censors questions or observations that contradict him. He will readily post any pats on the back or attacks on Owens or Radnich...

      Delete
    5. I've addressed it this time, many times in fact, as best and as civilized as possible--so if that's not good enough, feel free to do what you have to do, I respect that, and I'm done on the subject.

      Delete
    6. Why do you print Stan's comments. All he does is trash Radnich, sometimes for nonsensical reasons. Is it because you also despise Radnich?

      Delete
    7. Because when he's opining, (not often lately), I find him highly amusing --when he goes on way too many times, not so much.

      Delete
    8. Stan adds a good comedic break to the seriousness. And 50% of the time he's correct, every time.

      Delete
    9. Rich, I think you are starting to get a tad "soft" You haven't told anyone to go get fucked in awhile.

      Delete
  7. Okay, Rich, we have KGO-TV winning all of the news hours, even over PIX, despite their networks' ratings being opposite (CBS still leads ABC big in the rest of the country). We have KTVU not changing their 2 logo, even after FOX made them O&O. And all the Cumulated info has already been covered by you.
So besides PIX laying off Karnow, do you know of any other major staff or even format changes coming real soon?

  8. Why isn't John Rothmann not filling in for Dr Bill anymore?. Ever since KKSF Talk 910 dumped Bill Wattenburg, John Rothmann hasn't been heard since. I love his take on Politics. Maybe it's too Liberal to get ratings. Wish him luck on his new gig if he gets one.

    1. TRN, which is the BK syndicate that distributed the show, is no longer involved with Dr. Bill, (and others); if it were Wattenberg alone, Rothmann would be on --one of Dr. Bill's favorites.

  10. I listen to Savage and am curious how he is doing in the ratings.

I heard he was soundly beating Hannity head to head in NYC. But your recent article
said that Savage's numbers are way down.

    Is Savage's program safe?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, not at all. Nobody is safe anymore.

I had written many times that Savage was entertaining because his program was not limited to repetitious anti-Obama political talk--the public is fed up with partisan bickering and right-wing radio, (like Hannity, Rush, Levin, Sussman), REPEAT the same, un-entertaining drivel day in, day out--no wonder their ratings are way, way down.

Savage presented funny, alternative, solos and definitely not the usual domain---past few months, he's used his program to promote his book and broadcast same old, tired, anti-Obama material. It's not funny, it's not unique and his ratings are down across the board.

      Delete
    2. That's why I'm puzzled by MZ's insistence of right wing trash on his little radio station KSCO. Holy God! Rush, Charlie Frieedman, Georgia zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ. Bring back Lieberman Live now!!!! All this trashy Obama bashing is boring as hell.

  12. Rich, I noticed that Certain News Reporters like Amber Lee and Joe Vasquez only work the Late Evening Newscast while Rob Roth and John Fowler only work the Early Evening Newscast. Why is that? is it the particular News Reporter's Personal Preference or is it the News Directors Decision? I would think it terms of Prestige & News Value it would be More Advantageous for a TV News Reporter to work the Early Evening as Opposed to the Late Night Newscast. Keep up the Great Work Rich!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Certain street reporters have different time schedules --you mentioned Vazquez and Lee, they happen to work mostly in the evening--other general assignment reporters work the day shift. Yes, some are better than others but that doesn't necessarily dictate their schedule. It should.

    2. I know some of them plan to work around their spouses schedules like getting the kids to school etc.

  13. Hey Rich, is this a comparison: Damon Bruce and 'The Game' to Kobe Bryant and the current Lakers. One great talent with horrible teammates and front office(program director) around him?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's hilarious.

Damon Bruce is at best a good broadcaster, B level at best, who you might consider Derek Fisher.

To suggest he has star talent is to not understand hosts in other markets. Just so happens the Bay Area has some of the worst sports radio in the nation.

Damon is good in a relative sense.

      Delete
    2. Uh, I've said sorta that on many occasions. This market is pathetic. So, sure anything even remotely decent is good news. That's no knock on Damon, just the God's honest truth.

  15. Rich, am I off base here?

Seems to me that KNTV's morning news allots a LOT more time to Mike Inoye's traffic reports than the other morning programs...so much so that when he comes on, I switch channels.

The indirect implication is that there's a lot less news.

    What is your take?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Funny, I thought the same thing. I'm not necessarily anti-Inoye but he doesn't exactly light up the morning, so great minds think alike.

    2. I agree, not a knock on Inoye. But it sure minimizes the time for news. Is that intentional?

  16. You're in charge of KGO, what does it look like and why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not sure what your angle is but I think you're asking me what it would be like, format-wise and why I'd have it that way.

And to answer that I would have left it alone or moderately tweaked it a bit but some morons thought they'd go their own way and look what they did and how's that working today.

      Delete
    2. That seemed pretty straightforward to me. This blog picked up steam when KGO flipped so why not tell us what your M-F, 6-Midnight look like? Are you only available to criticize or do you actually have thoughts of your own too?

  19. What can be done about KGO-TV slicing off the first 2+ minutes of General Hospital. to tell us it's raining then go on to plug their weather app. Day time always takes it in the nuts even though GH has turned around and is drawing very respectable ratings and making money for ABC.

Any program should be preempted for a breaking story that affects many people like a shut down of the Bay Bridge or a major BART disaster. But this is bullshit. Arrogant assed local programmers who think soaps should all be cancelled because they don't like them.

Is there any possible recourse raising hell directly with The Mouse? It's the only thing I watch on channel 7.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's called cross-promotion and the local station, (in this case, KGO), using its allotment of time to plug their news content. You seem to be an avid soap opera fan so I get your annoyance but this is not new, KGO isn't the only one that does this and it's not going away.

If you're that upset fire up a letter or e-mail to the GM and ask your friends do the same.

      Delete
    2. It's not really their time. It's the first two plus minutes of the actual program time. It's not between programs it's during. It's particularly galling as a few Nov sweeps storylines are wrapping up or I wouldn't be nearly as pissed.

Okay, horse is still dead. Thank you for your response.

    3. Try on line to watch the complete episodes. I believe the soaps are on there somewhere. Maybe abcdaytime.

  20. Rich, I'm pleasantly surprised -- make that that elated, but jaw-dropping shocked -- that Cumulus hired Angie Coiro to fill the 10 A.M. slot on weekends. She's the first talk host hired, since "The Bloodbath," who has any depth, maturity or who would, possibly, pass Jack Swanson "muster." (OK, I give Cumulus credit for hiring Peter B. Collins, but for a for a disappointingly short time.)

But, why? It's a bit scary.

A group of "Good ol' Boys," with no sense of talk- radio programming , who have displayed absolute disregard for the quality forum that KGO once was , and whose obvious passion is for the cheaply earned dollar --- suddenly opt for quality.

This is spooky stuff. What are they up to??

    1. I caught some of Ms. Coiro's presentation and was pleasantly surprised. She was measured, thoughtful, took callers and has a nice voice to boot. How revolutionary! No I'm not related to Coiro nor am I Coiro.

    2. She was Michael Krasny's main fill in on Forum for years at KQED and could run rings around most of the current batch of KGO Talk Hosts. Great to hear her on the radio again.. Also shocked they did something right. And I am also not Angie.

      Delete
    3. I'm very pleased to hear Angie Coiro on the weekends. I like her style. It will be interesting to see how Chip Franklin works out starting Monday. I didn't care for him when he filled in too much.

      Delete
    4. I'll give you a few reasons why this woman was hired:

      1) They will fire liberals, and want to make sure they have other liberals.
      2) They will fire women, and want to make sure they have a woman.
      3) She was local.
      4) She comes cheap.
      5) They think they'll steal some KQED listeners. They won't. They kept Owens around to hold onto KGO listeners. Did that work? No, that clearly did not work.

      Simple minds at work.

I've listened to her many times before, and she does a fine job at doing what she does. This is in no way a knock on her.

If you plan on re-making your weekends, or your weekday hosts, hiring Angie Coiro is not the answer. She has never achieved noteworthy ratings success, and again, that's not necessarily a knock on her, but it is a fact.

This to me means they're making changes, and Angie will be the example, or the cover.

      Delete
    5. I doubt any hiring strategy for weekend talent at KGO is meant to set the world afire. Weekend ratings are nice but just window dressing. As far as never achieving ratings success, isn't she a bit unproven? She was fill-in talent on KQED so there's no way of knowing how she'll do. In any case, based just on her basic intelligence and ability to run a listenable talk show, I'd say she's an improvement over the current stable....as much as it pains me to say KGO did something right.

    1. Because every stinking MOS interview is from that fountain--and it's only chosen because it's a happy, suburban white-centric gathering spot with a few token minorities that the reporters seek out, as if Walnut Creek was representative of the entire Bay Area. Far from it.

There's a hidden MO here and if has nothing to do with MOS--it's more the consultants looking for suburbia to help the station's demos and advertising, nothing wrong with that, it's just that it's so phony how they present it.

Rarely see MOS' in Berkeley, even some of the nicer neighborhoods in Oakland, Emeryville, always that damn water fountain in Walnut Creek. --thanks for reading, Sincerely, Not a Water-Hater.

  25. From what I've heard, that important KGO radio meeting will be to discuss a few 'minor tweaks' to the programming which probably means adding a weeknight talk show or two. Cumulus realized awhile back that they can't go head to head against KCBS with an all news format, so they are slowly getting back into a more talk-friendly format as you've been reporting here Rich for the last several months. Nothing really earth-shattering.

  27. Media is hyping the Sundy Raiders game against the 49ers. The fights at their last game together at Candlestick were ultimately blamed on woefully inadequate 49er security. Niners had loose tailgating practices that were called into question and the lack of security in the parking lot. Raider Nation pointed out that previous games between the two teams in Oakland never had these problems. Raiders detailed how much tighter security is at the Coliseum.

The people captured on video who were fighting were all wearing Niner gear. They fought each other and security. Niner season ticket holders were upset about preseason games being cheap enough to attract riff raff. And, this mess at the Raiders game was the first of many behavior problems with Niner fans, the latest at Levi where two brothers who were Niner Nation nearly killed a guy in the bathroom.

I'm bringing this up now because you know what happened will be rewritten to be an Oakland problem and will crescendo into shrill Oakland bashing.
