KRON Gets Snubbed at NorCal Emmy Nominations; The Award You Have to Pay For; Barbara Simpson Still MIA; Christina Loren Engaged; Thursday Starter

KRON staffers at the station were steamed Wednesday night as the Northern California Emmy nominations were announced and to everyone's surprise KRON was snubbed. Like SNUBBED! Not one, not a one nomination for those at 1001 Van Ness, which is sort of ridiculous from this end.

It's easy to pile on KRON. But even KRON is worthy of an Emmy nomination. An insignificant piece of gold-plated statue that you literally have to pay for, but we'll get to that later on.

KRON, as low-budgeted and resource-challenged as it is, is also very capable and adept at covering breaking news events and staying with a story when it's merited --remember the Chevron Richmond refinery fire in 2013? KRON's coverage of that disaster was first-rate. KRON was one of the few stations that provided thorough coverage all the way to the end while other stations left.

As for the Emmy, this over-glorified statue is nothing more than an ego figure. One reporter in town who's won about 30 of 'em placed them in his garage. Other than a resume builder, a NorCal Emmy is worthless and get this!, if you want to win an Emmy you have to PAY for it. Stations have to buy the award and stations pay for the yearly dinner. The NorCal Emmys are basically an industry event and a chance for some anchor people to plow through some cocktails on a Saturday night. So, KRON, don't get too upset on this one.

*Add KRON: Look as if there's a good chance KRON won't be moving in to the 900 Front ABC studios until October at the earliest.

*Barbara Simpson still has not been heard from and I'm told some of her family is worried. I'm going out on a limb and will say I think she's probably out of town and wanted to ditch the world for few days--think decompression. That said, it might be good if Simpson were to notify family and friends that she's safe and OK.

*NBC Bay Area morning weather lady, Christina Loren, is getting married.

  1. Bummer about Christina. She is so sexy and as NBC used to say, "Must see TV"

  2. Thanks for the NorCal Emmy breakdown. No wonder down here in Pebble Beach third rate KION anchors Marc Cota Robles and his semi hot co-anchor wife are overly excited by the nominations the station garnered.

  3. I find people who bitch about the vainglory of the Emmy Award never won a statuette. Yet, they enter EVERY year.

    1. Sometimes the station makes them enter. If they know what's good for them.

When you're Woody Allen you can get away with snubbing PR. Others can't.

  4. Hey, idiot. You pay for an Oscar, too. Studios, actors, and agents pay thousands in AMPAS dues.

    1. Which is one reason why those awards--all of them--carry no weight with me. Plus it's all popularity and politics--who owes who a favor, etc.

I used to say only the Nobels were the only awards that weren't politicized and carried some validity until I saw Obama get a Peace Prize for...nothing. Except his melanomin, I guess.

  5. When NATAS came up with the "local" Emmy as a revenue stream, the concept of the Emmy was devalued. Now, it is a doorstop.

  6. @9:06. Publish your name so we can cross-check to see if you've ever entered.

  7. We have some very talented local broadcasters who do great work. But this should tell you all you need to know about the local Emmys -- Giants correspondent Amy G. has TWO of them.
It says a lot about the recipient whether they include the fact that they won a local or NorCal Emmy, or leave that part out when they tweet/Facebook a photo with the prize. (They do look really nice though. Like the real thing, they're much heavier than they look.)

  8. So Rich, why didn't you tell us that Christina Loren had accepted your proposal? Aren't we family, Didn't we deserve to know before the mass announcement? May you have many years of wedded bliss.

  9. At 9:30am...struck a nerve? Too close to home? No need to post my name...entered and won...people who have won them when they mattered see how it's been cheapened.

    1. I call BS on you. If you've, indeed, "won," then your award has always had the same "value." Your argument is specious. The regional awards were NEVER conceived as a "revenue stream." NATAS is separate from ATAS (which gives out the National awards. The LA region being the only exception.) Look it up. So, at what point did the Award no longer "matter?" (Beside the fact that you either "share" an Emmy with several people or have never really won a statuette. I mean, you're obviously not a good journalist. You don't have command of the facts.)

  10. My daughter, a t.v. producer in Sacramento, has just been nominated for her third EMMY...for a show she produced solely, along with a great editor..So don't go dissing those emmy awards. She already has two wins..with hopefully more to come!

    1. Congratulations from us to your daughter, Christine. If being emotional in public is your daughter's nature, I'll bet she could give a Mother's Day Tribute speech to you as that Basketball player, Kevin Durant did. I was brought to tears by his speech, and I could 'give a HOOP' about most sports. Please write to us later on the Barbara Simpson story when you get a moment.

  11. Speaking of commercials that have legs..."California Soul" sung by Marlene Shaw, written by the renowned Ashford and Simpson, for the Dodge trucks. That's a 1969 recording.
I get more music from commercials then I do MTV.
Hey,I got on to Fitz and the Tantrums because of a Mazda commercial.

  12. I've worked with Barbara Simpson from here first day at KTVU. I know how close she is with her family. I'm sure she's fine and her family knows where she is. It's good to chill when these things happen. Don

  13. Who in Barbara Simpson's family is worried? That's the first post that has concerned me. As a listener for many years, I understand that she has 3 daughters outside the Bay Area. I thought she had just taken off and was visiting her daughters and decompressing and discussing the next chapter in her life. Do her daughters not know where she is?????? Her father, mother, and brother have died in recent years. I can't imagine she would worry her daughters like that.

  14. Chef Ryan Scott has been nominated for an Emmy according to his Facebook Page. The world may be ending.

    1. No way! Wow getting drunk on air and acting like a loud frat boy on air is all it takes to get nominated!?

    2. Cannot STAND Ryan Scott.....probably because for years, I was a fan of Gene Burns' "Dining Around". Mr. Burns probably rotates in his grave each time Ryan Scott's "cooking show" is on the air. He should take his "act" to the circus.....

    3. @ 1:03 PM. I don't know if the world is ending, but I heard on Coast to Coast AM that the thermostat in Hell has been dropping rapidly, ever since the Ryan Scott nomination was announced. And that George Noory is busily constructing an ice-skate rental booth, adjacent to the Gates of Hades.

      Coincidence? You be the judge!

  15. Like him or not,Stanley Roberts should be nominated for some kind of local investigative performance. After that, they get MTV like awards "Most laughing at unfunny sportsguy jokes" Pam Moore runs away with that. "Having a job on TV while being obese and with a beard" George Rasch bucks the system..give him that.
"The many have tried, none have taken my job those s.o.b.'s" award to Darya. She's one tuff cookie.
And finally "My job is my life" awards to Cathy Heenan and Raddy. Equally obvious.
Yep, KRON is our Prairie Home Companion TV news. Brought to you by Orchard Supply and Dr. Hypno for all you personal and barn needs.

    1. Stan, I'm not a right winger. In fact I'm a true Marxist who gets offended when mindless right wingers accuse Obama of being a Marxist. Anyway re-evaluate your stance pertaining Stanley Roberts. That buffoon was caught red handed a few weeks back attacking Oakland "sideshows", yet the fool was using old Los Angeles footage. He lied on air about MY city of Oakland. I lost what little respect I had for that bum on that day. Did he apologize? He does not deserve an Emmy nomination. In fact I wouldn't even nominate him as a candidate for the donut eating contest at the Pleasanton fairgrounds even though he's well qualified for it based on his fat ass.

    2. I can see that. I did notice that he seems to have zeroed in on my eastbay city with the dumped trash and bad traffic.
I still say..he should tape cops in Pleasanton spending hours guarding cow roads.
On the other hand, Stanley did show cops in Oakland- HP,and Sheriffs too, FLEEING, sideshow thugs, one of whom who shoots a gun into the air.
I'm shocked still..not a damn peep out of Oakland city hall about that. No looking into who ran,why no backups...just lawless.

  16. What "award" on this planet DOESN'T have a measure of subjectivity to it? Even some
Olympic events are scored by "judges" who apply their own criteria of excellence. It's nice to be acknowledged by one's peers.
Nothing wrong with that. (By the way: the SF Emmy's are judged by media folks in OTHER markets. So, then, judges, say, in Atlanta or Chicago did not appreciate KRON's product--not a local jurist. That's the way it goes.)

  17. KRON is still a joke as long as that dweeb Aaron Pero continues on as the News Director. The guy must have pictures of the GM in a compromising position to have stayed in his job this long. Either that, or no one is paying much attention. And he's a first class jerk to boot.

  18. Remember when Mike Pechner won an award and his acceptance speech said something about "This is the last I will win here,I've been hired by CBS news in New York!"...and critic Bill Mann (and the Chron's also who's name I furget) scorched that as braggadocio egotism?
Those awards were televised back then. What a treat to see Terry Lowery in a gown. But anyways,I didn't think Pechner'a speech was all that bad, But its as if he said "You love me ,you really, really, love me" ever since...

  19. Interesting about Christina..time goes on. I swear,I was watching HGTV,and a young couple wanted to move to France. The wife was stone cold identical looking to a KTVU 22 year old Susanne Saunders, pre Shaw. The same hair, sculptural nose, flowing lions hair, goddess look. Every closeup showed a perfect complexion. Not a flaw.
    I had to watch it.

  21. What happened to Janu Arasu? That was the only reason I watched KRON, on mute.

  23. @9:51pm Holy Shit, did we both watch the same sideshow video? How in the fuck is that Los Angeles video? What, did he photo-shop in Alameda County Sheriff patrol car into the piece. You have to be the biggest buffoon if you believe that bullshit! I'm not one of Stanley Roberts biggest fans but don't make up shit! Idiot. Watch the video closely the same man is in different shots wearing the same shirt, so unless Stanley Roberts is a fucking brilliant genius and hires LA actors it's Oakland video, dumb shit.
