Of course now the mainstream trades have joined in to report the transaction involving the longtime Bay Area KGO-TV news anchor. She will be missed at 900 Front. She's also being forced to worked the last days of her contract.
I reported that Johnson was not keen on accepting a 20% pay cut affecting the majority of air-talent at KGO. Once Johnson's dissatisfaction was known in broadcast circles she was immediately on the radar to help sagging KNBC, a once-legacy station in Southern California and in the need of a big-name talent like Johnson.
Make no mistake: Carolyn Johnson is a MAJOR loss for KGO-TV here. She leaves behind a nearly 20-year run at ABC-SF and all in the name of budgetary slashes by the O and O Disney division --KGO makes lots of money and is neck and neck with KPIX in the ratings in the early evening but this departure is a significant setback.
The Dan Ashley -Johnson duo is one of the best pairs in Bay Area TV News and a great source of cohesion for ABC's Bay Area presence. Of course they'll survive--they all eventually do, only this will hurt a whole lot more.

She is a pro, and will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI agree. KTVU does keep repeating the same stories over and over again.
ReplyDeleteKTVU Stores
ReplyDeleteShooting in Oakland
Stabbing in Oakland
chaos in Oakland
shooting in San Jose
repeat every 20 minutes
KTVU is starting to hit repeat on the tape over and over again just like HLN
You forgot... Fire in San Jose
DeleteShe is a bright light in that newsroom and for it to be extinguished in the manner it was is downright foolish. The people who come out smelling in this situation are the corporate puppet GM and his minions running the newsroom. Meanwhile, Carolyn
ReplyDeleteJohnson comes out of this looking like the rose that she is.
Congratulations to her!
Please!! she's a pretty face that reads a teleprompter and is paid well. There's plenty of pretty faces in line to take her seat.
ReplyDeleteApparently you've never seen many of the segments she's done over the years. There are teleprompter readers and there are journalists. She comes across as a true professional with a personality. Yeah she's a beautiful woman, but losing a talent as her will be difficult to replace. Good luck Carolyn.
Delete99% of the time, she reading a Teleprompter and she does it well.
DeleteLook- we all know- Carolyn has that "power blond with a heart" that TV GM's salivate over. They give off a "It must be true if she says it" vibe. So,she wont be easy to replace here in the bay area since they also have to show a understanding of our multicultural bay area. The FOX news type that insist Santa is white wont do here. She must have wanted a change too. Its not like 20% makes her want to pull up roots.
ReplyDeleteWho to replace?..Hey make an offer to Laura Logan of 60 minutes...She might like SF.
Ah Stan........Laura Logan is off 60 Minutes for not vetting her sources better. Is she who u really want?
Deletelol,I knew. That's how you get her to work here cheap. She then helps rebuild her reputation in the liberal and accepting bay area.
DeleteI could have been a ND/GM. I get what people like..and what they like to look at.
My local paper, The Daily Review gave you credit today for breaking the Johnson departure story. Good work, Rich..
ReplyDeleteThe money coming from KRON4, which I understand will be renting studio space from KGO, will probably help stem the tide
