Savage Destroys Hannity; KTVU and Vacar/Fowler Shop Talk; Highest-Paid TV Anchors; KSFO/KGO Blather; Darya Folsom/KRON Intrigue; Karel No Red Carpet in Ireland; Friday Nuggets

Michael Savage
Love him, hate him, revile at his rants, he's the highest-paid radio host in the Bay Area; Michael Savage, syndicated talkie that has destroyed his ghost rival, Sean Hannity not only here, (KSFO), but NY, (King of the apple), Chicago, Detroit, Dallas. It's not even close in the important radio demos that count although some advertisers are still weary of Savage's discourse. They might have to reassess that position.

Savage makes north of a million dollars but between his books and diversified business interests fortune, he's reportedly worth close to $100 million. Who needs radio?

*We've told you the inside story about KTVU's desire to rid itself of the services of ace, veteran reporters, Tom Vacar and John Fowler. A reader inquires why we don't see much of those correspondents. Fair question. Think age perception by management although both reporters still turn out quality work. One caveat about Vacar and why he's still on the payroll: They're afraid of showing him the door: he's a lawyer.

Tom Vacar
SPEAKING of KTVU and Assorted Media Notes: Heather Holmes: I don't get it, looks and all. Body of work? Meh...Where's Maureen Naylor? Mystery...Bill Martin looks kind of cranky and we wonder why: wait, everybody's in a crappy mood over there...Thank God for Sal Castaneda...Top 3 SF TV anchors in terms of pay, in order: 1. Dan Ashley, KGO-TV, $500K range, 2. Frank Somerville, KTVU, a little north of $500K and KPIX5's Ken Bastida in the $400K neighborhood...Just a hunch: Tom Tolbert will not be the Warriors TV analyst replacement for Jim Barnett next year. Radio is another story. Whoever ends up in Barnett's chair will have a tough hill to climb...Salary chat: Greg Papa gets about $300G from the Raiders and Comcast Sports Net Bay Area but he's nowhere near the high six figures of 49ers/CBS/NBC multi-platform man, Ted Robinson...Latest estimate time play when KRON's gear is moved to 900 Front: late Summer...Stay off my lawn, girl version: Darya Folsom and Justine Waldman. Cat fight with a central, certain male proxy...The only thing worse than a Jan Wahl report on KCBS is a Jan Wahl report...Mystery man still devoid of making the big change: PIX boss, Bruno Cohen who seems, temporarily, at ease with the Battery Boys...When KSFO puppets are boasting that "we beat KGO!" you know things are scary. Yeah, wonderful work. One albatross with Father and Daughter AM tag team beating the 810 AM little sisters of the poor. Terrific, go collect your Sweet Jack coupons...Sarah and Vinnie: you should hear what your slightly-disgruntled guy from IT told me! Gosh, better than I thought. But seriously, you'll never guess who, what, where, but good luck..."Hi, Welcome to the SF Zoo, er, KGO Radio on a Sunday Night!"...Breaking Karel News: No red carpets in Ireland. And a bunch of drunk weirdo-types asking: "Who the fuck is that asshole?" --Yeah, here's your free food and Guinness now get the hell out of our country!...Damon Bruce consensus: one year, tops...See, here's the problem: sure, in the room, Roberta Gonzales may not have a whole lot of allies but outside the hall she has a swarm of supporters who love her dearly whether guided or misguided, it's just the facts maam...David Weintraub has 50 lawyers lined up if KGO dare screw with him but I don't think they be that stupid. Yet...

  1. Rich,

Are you just making things up? Savage beating hannity? Show us #s. Is Savage beating hannity's old number? That's the measure. Neither has a sellable demo # 25-54.

    Who cares about Karel?

Bruce will be gone? Not unless station flips he won't.

Weintraub has lawyers? For what? No one cares! Overnight guy talking about irrelevant guy with neither having an audience. You imagining this or do you know this?

  2. Agree about Savage. Show us some numbers! A couple of days ago Savage was gloating about how he destroyed Hannity but didn't provide numbers. He said and I quote:"I'm not allowed to discuss numbers on air". I thought that sounded fishy because I've heard him discuss numbers in the past. My first instinct is his numbers and Hannity's numbers are shitty, but Hannity's are a bit shittier...

    1. Rich has no numbers. That's right. They both have historically bad numbers, but hannity's are worse. The question is whether Savage is doing better at wabc than hannity did.

  3. Funny that Savage pushes his degree (IF he really has one,as some have questioned) in nutrition..and he's made a fortune is a sugarwater- corn syrup and caffeine confection that's sure to kill off a few heart ailing people.
And now that KPIX is again putting Bastida on the air after paying him for years it seems to just hang around, I notice that Liz Cook,as nice as she is, is no partner to him in the usual ad lib warmth department. No big guffaws,..no Marcia Brandywine (She's a fine girl, what a good wife she will be...)or Ann Frazier.or even Pam Moore to Bastida. Ken built up all these years of being a witty anchor..and its dying on the vine, man.
And the big lawsuit at SJ State? I called that like I see the future here and on BASG's blog the day they hired Mo.

  4. Ted Robinson might be the hardest working broadcaster in the country. I kid you not, a couple of weeks back I was channel surfing and tuned to a tennis match between UCLA vs USC on the PAC-12 network. Guess who was doing play by play? You got it. Ted Robinson. You have to admire that about the guy. He seems to really enjoy the craft no matter how big or small the event.

  6. Good for Michael Savage. He did it his way and made it all the way to the top. Good for him!

  7. Rich, what you write about Savage's milion million dollars that would be a joke compared to any other major radio host. Or is it just for KSFO ?

  8. Ugh....so sad......."Little sisters of the poor" ?
Hey, KGO is trying hard..... In fact last weekend they borrowed a reporter from the "KSFO traffic desk"... doing traffic reports on KGO
All these call signs I almost forgot what station I was listening to. ???
    It's sad at the bottom......LMFAO

  9. "One caveat about Vacar and why he's still on the payroll: They're afraid of showing him the door: he's a lawyer."

So? Is he a recognized expert on California labor law? The fact that he passed the bar decades ago, and may, or may not have ever actually practiced any type of law means nothing here.

He'd have to hire a lawyer should he be fired and decide to sue, just like Fowler would. Consider thinking before you type, Rich.

    1. @2:47 no you consider thinking before you type. The fact that Vacar is an attorney means he's well versed on what type of evidence to collect as well as what may or may not be admissible. Whether or not he's a practicing attorney or whether or not he's a labor law attorney is besides the point. I see it akin to: that guy walking down the dark alley by himself is an MMA fighter. Do I want to mess with the guy regardless of whether he's an expert in boxing, jujitsu, karate or taekwondo?

  10. Sad stay of affairs, Hannity is all about Republican talking points, and guests, not too many original thoughts, Savage is original, very smart, but also very negative, and angry, who wants to listen to all his anger, he does not like anybody, not much pleases him. I came to the US in the mid sixties as an au pair from Denmark, one thing I liked about the US right away, was how positive everyone was, even through the turbulent late sixties and early seventies, people were positive. JFK projected a positive image, (whom I liked and admired) as did Reagan (whom I did not agree with) now if you listen to talk radio it is mostly negative. The right wingers, think everybody is after their money, and they are they only on who works hard. The left wingers think global warming is going to destroy everything, and that they can not get ahead because the deck is stacked against them. The truth is somewhere in between I suspect, and I just cannot spend my time listen to someone as negative as Savage. Typically the right has the mindset that we are all responsible for our own failures and/or success, which to a large degree I agree with, except, according to Savage and his ilk (Sussman, Levin) when we have a Democratic president, especially a black democratic president, then all of sudden everything is his fault.

    1. You nailed it perfectly. Savage is a negative prick. The only time the guy is "uplifting" is when he longs for the "good ol'" days of his childhood when Jim Crow was alive and well. You know the times when as he says: "the chrome was thick and the women were straight". Funny how he stopped mentioning his soft drink company by name when the boycotts were in full force...

  11. Savage has talent but if push came to shove, I'd take Levin in a heartbeat.

Gonzalez is exactly where she belongs, out of sight.

    1. I posted the blog at 6:59 and as far as I'm concerned Levin is as negative as Savage, and although they have many ideas in common, they HATE eachother, but then I don't think Savage like very many people, especially other talk show host, he is the male lion defending his territory, as intelligent as he is, there is something very primitive about him. They both come off as negative, nasty and to me not worth the trouble. I do listen to Tom Sullivan, he seem like a fairly reasonable conservative, although I don't agree with his politics.
Listened to Sussman this a.m. he was bitching about the money we might be spending on finding the lost plane (Malaysian) didn't think it was worth the money, since only 3 americans was on board. Since when has the US become all about money? It is not only the other 236 people on the plane, it is also what we might learn about the crash, should something be discovered. I don't think the US was thinking about money, when they help liberate my country, (Denmark) and most of Europe in 1945, nor did Brian Sussman have any objection about the money spend when Bush went into Iraq. He is trying himself into himself into a pretzel so he can blame Obama for the lost airplane. Don't you know everything that goes wrong in the world somehow can be traced back to Obama. Six degree's of seperations!!!!!!!

    2. 10:40, you seem to have more than your fair share of hatred, intolerance and anger. Have you ever considered a career in radio?

      Delete
    3. You are confused, and don't seem to understand the meaning of the words anger, hatred and intolerance. I said I could not listen to Savage because of HIS ANGER AND NEGATIVITY. How does that make ME angry. I don't like Savage, Sussman or Levin as talk show hosts, why is that hatred or intolerance. In no way did I suggest they should not be on the air, I don't know them, they are talk show hosts, they are suppose to inform and entertain, for me they don't do that. If you want to listen go ahead. Do I hate them, of course not, how can I, I don't know them, they don't do or say anything that affects me or my life. I think you need to rethink your wording or perhaps a dictionary would be of help, so you might understand the true meaning of the words you use.

  13. Savage has the best show on Radio!
    Hands down.
Levin sounds like a rap record over and over about Ronald Reagon and the constitution. Nothing Else. Hannity thinks every body is a great american and always agrees with Neo Cons. A republican mascot just like Rush.
Michael Savage talks about any topic from Politics, Health, Society, Cooking, animals etc. I have been listening to Michael Savage for the past 16 years and I will continue to listen.

  15. He would probably be dominating in Houston too if KSEV would air his entire show. Instead we get Dave Pansey the money guy. Houstonians are stuck with Hannity, who is on two other stations in the area here. Complete BS.

  16. Savage Nation is the most informative and honest radio show on the air today. The problem people have is that he has common sense and common sense is almost non existent today.
