KPIX/KNTV Stay with Huge China Basin Fire While Mysteriously KRON Goes back to ET

This has been quite a fire. A visual one made for TV News--curiously, only KPIX and KNTV, (NBC Bay Area), has stayed with the story while curiously, KRON, --a story, albeit one in which the fire is under control--went away from the China Basin scene and go to a stale syndicated "ET." Bizarre.

--KTVU also broke from the fire, but its sister station, KICU is continuing live coverage.

  1. Yeah,I caught that too. I went out to water..came back and rewound the DVR. NO sports..just fire, commercial and then the Gossip show. KRON now has intern news directors?...I can just see some 16 year old ND like a Comcast commercial calling for cutting sports.."The old grandpa guy just says the same things everyday"...

  2. What's the big deal? Firemen were getting it under control. We're not going to find out tonight if it was arson, construction workers, or a homeless vagrant.

Other than prurient interest, why stay with it?

    1. 100% agree. 2 minutes of looking at smoke along with the basic details pretty much does it for me..

    2. Yeah, it was a mop up operation after 6:30 or so. What are they gonna do...interview the overpaid firefighters and ask if it was hot or stunk? Resuming regular programming wasn't exactly another Heidi game.

A vagrant as the source is unlikely as they seem to gravitate to low key buildings with no regular activity. A 40 million dollar project gets locked up and probably has a watchman.

    3. In what sense do you mean "prurient" interest in a fire. Did you mean sexual interest? What is "phoney"? Is that something to do with a smart phone, or did you mean "phony", which is a word?

    4. I did say "prurient." Other than watching it for kicks, getting *any* sort of gratification from it.

  3. I didn't even know about it until I saw the headline on yahoo. The chief said they expect the building to collapse. I wonder if Jewer had it insured.

    1. JEWER? What's that supposed to mean? If it's an antisemitic comment it should not be published here.

    2. Do you feign such outrage when you see comments or jokes about Christianity? Demo's are always the first to yell racism.

    3. Since we're on the subject is the term "jew fro" anti-Semitic? If I were you I wouldn't watch Curb your Enthusiasm. You'd have a heart attack. Palestinian chicken anyone?

  5. KRON was using footage from the KGO chopper as part of their shared services agreement. Whenever KGO decided to end the chopper coverage, KRON lost their coverage. And sure, they could try and call in some reporters to go cover it, but most of them were probably already at their shifts at Radio Shack or wherever they work when they're not pulling part-time duty at KRON. For a station to cover news they need reporters and cameras and tech staff and those all cost money. But I'm sure Pero would blame everything on the staff and not lack of resources.

  6. I didn't switch channels so it's possible other stations did the same thing but KGO broke away from the Network news about 5:50 and spent the next 70 minutes strictly on the fire. They didn't even break for commercials, when was the last time that happened? Overall, they did a good job but some of the coverage did become repetitious.

  7. Who cares about a bunch of buildings that are owned by a bunch of rich, snobby elitists burning to the ground? They're lucky to at least have jobs and money in the bank and homes to go to sleep in at night, unlike many of their unfortunatel fellow citizens whom the GOP continues to demonize. And those rich folks will get every penny that those buildings were worth from the insurance and just build them again. It's no great tragedy. A much greater tragedy is a kid who drops out of school, a dad who loses a job and can't support his family, or a woman who has cancer at a young age. I'm not going to feel sorry for those cretins who drink from the public trough and get corporate welfare, yet are the first ones to bitch and moan about tax money going to welfare recipients. How about all of the money that is stashed off shore by these fat- cat rich folks? Now that's something to get upset about!

    1. You sound like one of the nuts who likes to block the buses taking folks to work in Silicon Valley.

That said, that was one hell of a blaze!
