Exclusive: The Game Wanted KNBR's Larry Krueger to Team with Damon Bruce; Inside Story

During their negotiations to bring Damon Bruce over to  3-7 PM, Entercom's 95.7 The Game courted KNBR personality, Larry Krueger to work as a two-man team with Bruce, according to several broadcast sources close to the story.

Kruger was interested enough to weigh the offer seriously and Bruce, who normally doesn't like being a part of a "team set-up" was OK with the arrangement.

But Krueger balked, according to a source, over the specifics of the contract, and continues on as the co-host of the popular "Gary, (Radnich) and Larry Show" on KNBR from 9-Noon.

At that point, The Game finalized their deal with Bruce who, according to my sources, got a four-year contract worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $200-250K a year. Only the first year is guaranteed.

Bruce begins at The Game from 3-7 PM beginning March 31st.

  2. I like Larry. I say go wherever you can make the most Lar...with the future in mind of course. I'd turn the dial to listen to Larry. Damon? Probably not. Egotistical in my opinion. Entertaining? Sure, but his opinions rub me the wrong way. And no, the female-gate didn't bother me.

  3. Wow 200-250 K for him? What a waste of money!!! They need to fire the PD immediately

  4. Larry is smart to stay at KNBR and his show is also on CSN California. He'd have no exposure on 95.7

  5. Larry Krueger ... ol' marble mouth. I swear, I can't listen to him. Always sounds like he's got about 22 Skittles in his mouth while he talks. Not as bad as Tolbert, who always sounds like he's eating.

  6. And the story only gets more interesting.
    Krueger is worth pursing.

  7. Why would Krueger balk? He can't have any more job security at knbr and Radnich is a much bigger jerk than Bruce.

  9. Why anybody would want to work with or even listen to the racist Larry Krueger is beyond me. He showed his true colors and did the old fashioned back pedal and apology but I guess he's saving the trip to rehab for his next hateful rant. Maybe people listen to KKKrueger the same way people watch NASCAR - waiting for a crash. Once Radnich leaves the building or gets sick of him KKKruegers KKKareer is over. No matter what the guy does he's already told everyone how he feels and nobody should be surprised if they know his background as a spoiled, silver spoon, private schooled snob. Except Larry was never the brightest or most well liked when we were in school, he had one friend for 12 years, so he never made the scholastic achievements or contacts that have propelled his peers through life to seven figure salaries. Meanwhile Larry enjoys Raddys' crumbs and wonders if that small pool has room for both him and Sarlatte.

    2. By definition, most kids in school are not "the brightest or most well liked," so even if that is an accurate depiction of Larry's school years it means nothing. The man obviously works hard, and, as sports guys go, seems to have sufficient aptitude and talent for this, and perhaps, any market.

The accusation of racism (4:26 PM) is interesting, in that it is based on criteria (spoiled, silver spoon, private school snob) that effectively infer his racial background (white) while questioning his intelligence -- the very thing that Larry did when he criticized the "brain-dead Caribbean hitters"on the SF Giants.

Is calling someone a not-so-bright white guy really different than what Larry did in 2005?

Seriously, if Kreuger actually gave this some thought, then he's stupid. He has already returned from oblivion once, why tempt fate again? That much for D. Bruce, seems high, no wonder only one yr. is guaranteed.

    6. 7:58 - apparently these days that if a non-white person takes a cheap shot at a white person, it's not considered racist. Because saying so would be non PC.

    7. Everyone likes to yell racism lately whether it be Demo's manipulating the masses or people on this blog. I think the country as a whole needs to stop being so "politically correct". Ten years from now the accusation of racism will lose the stigma. People will tire of it. What will be your go to insult them lefties?

    8. How about you just stop with your fucking closet racist comments? "Sounds like a brown person with an axe to grind? Why do we have to be so PC all the time? Because assholes, people are tired of being disrespected. Especially by shitheads that are too scared to put their names on comments.

    10. No no no @8:54, @7:21 is man enough to put his name on his postings!.....I mean his initials....well most likely the initials of his neighbor but yea! He's more manly than the rest of us!

Back to his comment....if anyone has the right to be sick and tired of being disrespected its white men and women. The war on white Caucasian men,,,where we have to apologize for anything and everything,,,and where programs are tailored to hire every other skin color but ours when we will be the minority in 5 to 10 years....if anyone has a right to be offended it is us.

    11. Back to the original comment at @4:26, it really does sound like someone with a personal axe to grind. Throwing out Larry's past and what I believe is his wifes name? It is obviously someone who is jealous of what Larry has accomplished in his life. For him to keep using KKK and all that other nonsense is juvenile.

      Not a genuine white person.

    12. DW @ 7:21

First of all, "Sounds like a brown person with an axe to grind" (Anonymous @6:16 PM) qualifies as a racist comment using only an extremely narrow and, frankly, questionable standard. There is nothing inherently derogatory in opining that a complaint sounds like an "axe to grind," nor is it racist nor ignorant to speculate that a commenter who demonstrates such an emotional reaction to an eight year ago insult of Latins, and then goes on to depict the person who leveled the insult as a "spoiled, silver spoon, private school snob," just might be a person of Latin heritage. Deductive reasoning is not a crime (at least, not yet).

Secondly, for you to lash out so viciously at those you refer to as "assholes" and "shitheads," at the same time you demand respect for your own kind constitutes good cause to question your intelligence. That you then go on to embarrass yourself by equating anonymity with cowardice -- on a blog that voraciously feeds off the input of in-the-know anonymous participants, constitutes the same kind of swing-and-miss mentality that got Larry Krueger in so much trouble in the first place.

    14. Arse, you are still living up to your first name. "Sounds like a brown person with an axe to grind" (Anonymous @6:16 PM) is facially a racist statement, no matter what nonsensical standard you chose to apply.

You then go on to launch some ugly, uninformed racist comments of your own.

Apparently you imagine that your pretentious, long-winded drivel is oh-so fascinating, (love your "deductive reasoning"), seems more like a collection of words in search of a coherent message.

      Delete
    15. 3:57, trouble with reading much? Or just a short attention span? Two paragraphs is "long-winded"?

      Delete
    16. NOT @ 3:57 PM -- You accuse me of pretentiousness after you declare, without qualification, that the statement in question is racist. Who the hell elected you Language Czar? Check yourself, you are an arse.

You also accuse me of some "ugly, uninformed racists comments" but don't even have he courage to identify them so that you might be contradicted. Your response here and elsewhere -- name-calling and knee-jerk, identify you as a product of one of those brain-numbing gulags currently passing themselves off as institutions of higher learning. You should demand a refund... along with a clean install.

    17. I think most of you chumps that responded here just proved my point. "If there's anyone complaining it should be white men and women?? Ha !!! You honestly think I care to play tough guy games with some closet racist clowns I will never meet? LOL @ 11.36 Thank you Mr. Anonymous. Where is your fucking names? I mean even Rich might like to know that one. You people are a fucking joke.

    18. Arse, It doesn't take courage to identify your ugly racist comment, just an IQ over 95. Guess I was giving you too much credit.

As for your buddy @4:32, "long-winded" does not refer exclusively to length, it also applies to excessive verbosity and that's Arse Nardmann in a nutshell. Check out his last paragraph.

  12. Damon Bruce got a four year deal worth about 1 million dollars total (if he works there four years)? That's insane! The guy was only being paid 50 to 60 grand a year by Cumulus. Why in the world would Entercom want to pay that kind of money for such a mediocre talent? I guess it shows how stupid the broadcasting profession is. They fire capable veterans who have been trained properly and have credibility, and then hire loud-mouth idiots like Damon Bruce, who would have been laughed off the air in years past. This latest move just shows once again how far broadcast industry has truly fallen!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That would have been great. With the news of Bruce (who I don't like) going to the Game, and the firing of the Rise Guys (who I liked), I've taken 95.7 off my radio presets. With Krueger gone from KNBR I could listen to Gary again. Time to brush up on my Spanish and switch to ESPN deportes 860 I guess.

    2. I agree. I started listening to the Rise Guys and thought they were much better than Murph & Mac. The Rise Guys talked sports but kept things fun for the morning commute. I'd have to say that the recent changes make 95.7 less of a destination station. I'm disappointed.

  16. This is some blog. Either the ravings of a madman or the total obsession with small time sports radio. What is it up to now, like 6 post on Damon Bruce going from a station no one listens to to another station no one listens to? Meantime, KFOG, a station that still has some ratings, makes a change in mornings and mid-days and there's not a peep. Yeah, we know Rich, you don't listen. In fact, you don't cover anything other than sports and news/talk, which leaves out 98% of the radio dial. Useless.

  18. Let's get real. We are talking about sports talk radio. No one ever said you have to be a genius.

Both Damon and Larry have big mouths, they are both loud, and talk a lot. To me, Damon is a little smarter, a little more well-rounded, and a little more amusing. Larry is just too belligerent, he's too angry, doesn't come across as a likeable guy.

What it comes down to is whether you like the guy, whether you feel comfortable listening to him or not. I just don't like Larry.

  19. I think the reason that some white people are pissed off with all of the 'PC stuff,' is due to the fact that they don't like it that they're not in charge anymore. It's the same reason why we've been seeing a 'backlash' from a lot of right wing Republicans, who don't like the fact that they're now a minority. What goes around comes around however, and they should have expected this after the shameful way white men generally treated minorities and women for many generations. You reap what you sow! Now deal with it like men, and stop whining like poor little babies!

    1. If you want to throw stereotyped/racist commentary ("the shameful way white men generally treated minorities and women for many generations") around, then let's discuss the way latinos treat women, or how Mexican culture is so open to black people.

    2. I didn't treat anybody badly. Previous generations have nothing to do with me. You are the racist for keeping the race issue going.

Damon is the one I have absolutely no use for - next year when 95.7 is finished, he'll end up in a market where he belongs, like Jacksonville, Florida.
