KTVU Did 5 Weather Teases On The 10 O'Clock News Last Night

 Seriously, I counted. Five times. 5! And that doesn't count the weather report itself at 10: 45. Mind you, this isn't because of the drought conditions--apparently KTVU has a weather fetish and figures by teasing it multiple times people will be glued.

I was annoyed. And I like Bill Martin but it makes Bill look foolish.

The consultants who couldn't tell the difference between a helicopter shot and a roof mounted camera tell the dickless GM's like Block, McVay, and Raponi, and know nothing news directors like Finlayson, Chapius, and now Rosenfeld that viewers are interested in weather. Do more weather teases, and our focus groups tell us that 'in the area where you live" is the phrase that hooks them. Tell Cox to make the check out in the amount of 10,000 dollars for that little gem. Thank you, and PLEASE come again.

  2. Unfortunately doing more and more weather on local TV is where things are going today. Oh, and endless traffic reports too. It's a way for a station to fill air time with simple "stuff". Whatever happened to hard news? Investigative reporting? The journalistic standards of a vast amount of television stations has unfortunately dropped to an all time low.

  4. I haven't been counting, but three or four or five teases seems to have been the norm at KTVU for awhile now. Also, it is annoying that they have migrated the full weather report later and later to 10:45 (though not as annoying as it would be if the weather conditions were actually "news").

  5. Rich was so aghast at KTVU AsianaGate, making fun of Asian names. Isn't it hypocritical for him to condone the exact same thing here in the comments of his blog?

  6. The local Fox affiliate in Santa Maria now starts their 10pm newscast with a short weather report. They do the full report about 15 minutes into the broadcast. They do 7 day forecasts, and use the very lame tagline of "we have a weekend in every forecast".

    2. You must be referring to the baldie weather guesser Norm Hoffman. That newscast was replaced in Monterey Bay with KTVU. Frank Sommerville and Julie Haener put to shame that goofy couple and co-anchors Marc Cota Robles and Jasmine Viel

    3. There are changes underway with the Cowles owned stations. News-Press & Gazette Company (NPG) has purchased KION (Fox in Monterey), KMUV (Telemundo) and KKFX (Fox in Santa Maria). In addition, they've entered a shared services agreement for KCOY (CBS in Santa Maria) with Cowles. NPG owns the ABC affiliate in Santa Barbara. Cowles has been terrible for it's news broadcasts - they're all done in Salinas, with much of the news broadcast being prerecorded.

      If you think Marc and Jas are bad, Jacqueline Tualla on the weekends is much, much worse.

  7. They advertise the drought, the "perfect" conditions for fire, and then are amazed, in sheer wonderment, when some scum-sucking arsonist sets alight a hillside that grows into an inferno. I cannot believe the sheer stupidity and irresponsibility of these "news" people on TV. Yeah, I can criticize. I'm a news veteran, radio and print. And, with regard to Rich's larger point, in the Bay Area, the weather is as predictable as Google invading your privacy. It's a no-brainer. All year. Unless we have floods, a tsunami, etc. The amount of money wasted on weather reports should be spent on investigative news. Real news. Weather can be checked on watches, bands, phones, tablets, etc. Who watches weather on TV? Waiting for all those commercial breaks to see what you can find out in 30 seconds on a phone, computer or tablet or watch?

  8. so tired of weather reports. KGO 7 has 2 plus a 1 minute or so into their 6 PM news. Devote more to sports or hard news. We live in an area that has basically very little real weather. 9 minutes of weather is not needed.

  9. Back in the mid to late 60's. Roger Grimsbt's weather forcast went like this..."Tomorrow's weather Fair (or rainy or cloudy etc), Hoping your news is good news, I'm Roger Grimsby." One word...no more, no less. Of course that was before Roger went to New York's WABC and Van Amburg took over with Polka Dot Pete Giddings doing the weather. The world has never been the same.

  10. Their "consultants," whom they pay a pretty penny, tell them this is what people want: weather, weather and more weather. The consultants lie, but by telling managers and owners what they want to hear, they get invited back to the party. Something a grade-schooler could figure out. But most of the suits that own and run the media aren't that bright.

  11. I have worked in broadcasting for nearly 40 years, and 'consultants' are a joke among those who work on-air and behind the scenes. They are usually failed news directors, clueless program directors, or lousy on-air reporters who turn to 'consulting' because they've exhausted the other avenues. I have to give them credit for one thing; their ability to BS people in management, and pull the wool over their eyes. If I told you some of the clueless and astonishingly bad decisions that the station where I worked made at the suggestion of consultants, you'd be surprised. Believe me, they are the bane of our world, but unfortunately they are here to stay, because most management types have no clue what it takes to be a broadcaster.

    1. Consultants BSing people, pulling the wool over their eyes, making unqualified/bad decisions, wasting time and effort, and making a small fortune doing it. Tantamount to what I saw in the High-Tech industry 20-30 years ago! They typify bunco in the business world, and are a bane indeed!
