Cyber Monday Yawn; Ronnnn on KGO Comparing Himself to McDonald's Workers; KTVU Zombies; Why Roberta Gonzales is Solid; Media Notes

It's a good thing it's Cyber Monday because without it, nobody has a story to report. The lapdogs are out full force throttle giving a ton of FREE pub to the businesses that take part in this massively over-reported boondoggle that reeks of the yaybloobs stabbing one another outside the Walmarts over the weekend.

*Ronnn was complaining about the outrage over McDonald's workers wanting a livable wage. He compared his own pay cut to that of the fast-food worker industry. Like I said, maybe it's he who's slippin'.

*One last Owens anecdote: I REPEAT: No one bemoans the right of a corporation to change formats and go another way, and in the process ruin a great legacy radio station both nationally and locally renowned. NOBODY, including me, asked and demanded Owens quit--it's THIS and THIS alone which Ronnnnnnnnnnn failed and continues to fail to acknowledge: HIS RESPONSE to what happened. Or maybe should I say his failure to say anything nor acknowledge what had taken place just a day before the events of Dec. 1, 2011. Had Ron done so; even half-assed as he did last week, then Ronnnnnnnnnn's legacy would have been preserved and his lack of professional tact would have been diffused. That's it, plain and simple. It's not a matter of Ronnnnn having to kiss Cumulus ass--he could have and should have handled the whole matter in the proper context but was entirely incapable. Maybe it's the gadgets.

*KTVU zombies are beginning to find fault to the current management team and the grumbling is to the point where some of the non-zombies are bitching loud and clear. The problem: since Asiana NameGate, the GM and the ND have little to say if nothing at all. Some would say even when they spoke they said nothing. Long gone are the days of Zehnder, Finlayson, Richmond, Shandobil and Mann. When some staffers miss Special Ed you know there's issues.

*The reason why I like Roberta Gonzales and will continue to like RG at KPIX is because RG does a lot of charity work when the camera is off. It's not her fault she was born with movie star features; it's not her fault that PTA mothers and fathers are a core demo attracted to her style and substance; it's not her fault that men and some women find Gonzales a pleasure to watch report the weather and do so in a style that might be grating to some but wholesome to others. Sorry management and DR.

  1. And today, KGOs spin doctors went to work and got Lowenstein some Datebook time in the Comical. http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Ronn-Owens-reflects-on-his-long-radio-career-5026261.php

  2. Let it go at this point. Get a life. I feel like you are just an extremely jealous and bitter person. Focus on yourself. Maybe there was a point to be mentioned two years ago, but let it go man. I don’t think you know for sure how you would have handled a similar situation. Maybe better, maybe worse, but at some point, you need to live your own life. I worked at KGO for over a decade and was a part of the initial layoffs.

    1. Why should the people who loved KGO let go? We've been robbed of a format we treasured! And we want it back... Maybe our favorite Hosts have moved on
yet Christine Craft and Pat Thurston are examples of what WE want. Cumulus
can cost cut themselves right out of the Bay Area as far as I'm concerned. They Suck!!!

  3. You probably saw the interview with Ronn in the Chronicle today. He stated there that he has never been told what to say or not say. All the more disgusting that he still indicates that he seems to like the format change.

  4. Rich, did you see the puff piece "interview" with Ronnnnnnnnn in the Datebook today?

  5. Roberta's capacity for activity is pretty amazing. Family, "extreme" athletic training and events, commuting, radio, television (where her shifts have rotated, and she often reports from the field), science, social life, church, charities, avid sports fan, hockey mom. The lady lives her life to the fullest!

    1. I've never seen another post on this blog that waved a red flag like this one! If Roberta didn't submit this herself, guaranteed that it was a family member. The
only part of her resume that was left out was the pub crawling.

  6. Wow, I almost choked on my Pepsi when I read that RG has movie star features.

I worked with the woman. The only "movie star" feature she has is that she's a big diva.

    1. Agreed. And I'm supposed to like Roberta Gonzales because "she does a lot of charity work when the camera is off." PLEEEZE, pure nonsense.

I don't care what she does when the camera is off. She is a TV weatherperson, that's it.. Like I'm supposed to prefer performers who do the most charity work? Ridiculous!

  9. Please Rich, as a former KTVUer, I beg you, do not put Finlayson in the same sentence as the rest of those names, especially Zehnder, who was the real singular genius behind that station. Finlayson was and is a bean-counter who understands zero about news but can get a big erection looking at a ratings chart. The day Fred Z announced he was retiring and Andrew was taking over, it was like a funeral parlor in the newsroom. One of the vet reporters whispered to me, "We are so fucked now." She was right.

Andrew has, after a string of failures, continued to fall up. He's now VP of a "digital media consultancy" in LA that...well...you tell me what the hell it does. It's a lot of double-talk and platitudes, frankly: http://smithgeiger.com/. Oh, and Finlayson is also in some sort of web-based social media biz with another hollow suit, Brian Banmiller: http://fizwoz.com/ (click through the site and notice how there's...nothing on it).

  10. Yes Rich, of course this is an "over-reported boondoggle."

More and more, Rich, it seems that you yourself have nothing to write about beyond criticizing what others are writing about.

3:34-Do you really not see the irony in what you posted? You are jabbing at Rich because he's criticizing what others write about so your chosen course of action in response to the same is criticizing what he writes about.

Take a minute to ruminate on that.

  11. Owens is making it about himself again. During the BART strike, I heard
him saying times are tough and people are hurting but the BART workers
must take a substantial pay cut like he did when he signed a new contract
for much less to stay at KGO. What a putz!

  12. It does seem iRonnic Complaining about fast food workers wanting a better wage and taking Bart management side aginst workers, yet when he wanted more, when he was already the highest paid on the station, he went on strike himself. Micky should have let him go. He inflated salery probably help lead to the demise of KGO.

  13. Yawn. I agree. I don't need day-by-day reporting of retail sales. The news media simply have nothing to report and too much time to fill.

  14. News, big story news seems to occur in cycles of magnitude. This is nothing but my subjective opinion. For a couple of weeks now, people on this site have been gnawing on the same old bones, focusing on local affairs. Its' been sort of, well sort of like an angry block party, with lots of loud music and heavy drinking. Then, there is an big BOOM sound that makes everybody shut up for a minute or two. A lot of people seem to have spilled their drinks, knocked the salad plates off the picnic tables. That booming noise means the approach of a new story line. Just over the Horizon, the sun is coming up, throwing daylight on the new news of the day. I think before the end of this month, we will be wrapped up in completely different stories, probably non local, but of great significance all the same. Stay tuned, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

    1. You're not going to get anything worthwhile from the msm other than dumb stories and an occasional WAY overblown mini tragedy. Independent internet news sites are continuously covering important issues and events that may only get a 15 second spot elsewhere. TV is good for sports and thats about it.

  15. Anon at 2:54pm....very true....Andrew and Brian both married "well", enabling them to play while the real money makers worked. But you weren't quite right on BB....he isn't just am empty suit, he's a bad facelift in an empty suit.
Their crapola website fizwoz in a thinly veiled ruse to get content for BB to turnaround on his mail it in reports he does for cbs radio....his level if detachment and entitlement is something to behold.

  17. Rich .. it appears 960 is changing formats to Far Right Radio and by doing so is determined to go the way -- in the ratings anyway -- the same as KGO 810. No more NorMan Goldman at 3 pm, and the rest. In fact no progressive leaning commercial radio during the work week in the Bay Area at all. No left leaning radio at all? In San Francisco? Sigh. Rich, are you going to cover 960 AM's motivation for this change?
