Up and Comer: NBC Bay Area's Marla Tellez Brightens The Morning; Thursday Starter

Marla Tellez is KNTV's (NBC Bay Area) morning 11 AM anchor and host of its morning news show, "Today in the Bay." I've been watching Tellez for quite some time and wondered aloud why she hasn't become a star. Not that Tellez needs evening primetime to legitimize her journalistic TV wares but she's sort of under the radar.

When you show a lot of local TV news vigor you tend to catch the eye of the network honchos and word on the street is Tellez certainly more than capable to report on the national scene. Tellez  is a two-time Emmy award winner.  Her first came in 2006 for "Outstanding Achievement, Education Program" for a 30-minute show she produced on alternative fuels.  She earned her second Emmy for "Outstanding Achievement, Arts/Entertainment Program" for "Six Degrees of Love," a true Bay Area love story.

Beyond body of work, Tellez has a personality too. That's good. Often times ego has a way of permeating the entire human TV torso--Tellez is a sure-fire winner for the San Jose NBC O and O. If you haven't seen her, take a look. I promise you quality viewing time, seriously I do.

    1. True, very true, but that makes me skeptical. The national news outlets generally hire the attractive folks and expect them to tow the company line. They can't pass up the money or exposure and become part of the problem. Women sports reporters? Certainly there are more beefy/less attractive women with better opinions but they get the radio or print gigs. Yes a double standard and there are exceptions to the rule, but still a mostly true statement.

I can think of one woman news person dumped. She thought she was a 10/looks, 10/personality, 10/intelligence. Survey results came up something like 6,2,2. Bye Bye! She never recovered from the harsh reality.

I used to patronize supercuts and hoped for the least attractive snipper expecting a better effort rather than a woody.

Good luck to Ms Tellez (10,10,?).

  2. Local Santa Rosa girl, was also in an episode of Breaking Bad, playing a newscaster reporting the plane crash. I think at the time of filming she was working in Albuquerque?

  3. Thanks, Rich. I'll give her a try. I am so discouraged with the others - especially KPIX - that I've given up watching the news; the Web is my source now.

  4. This time you got it right Rich. You praised KPIX's Anne Macovec and Christian Ayers in the past, and I was left scratching my head. But Marla is the real deal. Smart, personable and attractive.

  5. I like Marla. Didn't care for her raspy voice at first, but got over that. Won't miss her partner, John Kelley; he's patronizing.

  6. Thanks Rich, I follow Marla for a while, she is a hard working, sharp, and talented lady; works extremely well with any setting (either with Jon Kelley or Laura Cannon). No doubt, she is a star packed with a pleasant personality, an appropriate work ethics and her cuteness... #WatchOut ...she will rock any prime time opportunities... She always gonna be my all time favorite!

  7. I love Marla.... noticed her first in the KPIX show with Liam Mayclem! Maybe it is the half Hispanic that she has in her [because I really like racial mixes]. But mostly, I like her cuteness and personality and enjoy seeing her on the desk on the 6AM at times [I can't watch the 11AM]. At times, she exudes some girl next door sexiness also!
BTW, that photo above is hot and was on her Facebook page a couple of years ago. It was shot by a fan, if I am not mistaken.

  8. The problem with TV is it's mostly about your 'presentation' and your appearance than what you are actually saying. I know because I worked on-air in TV off and on for ten years in small, medium and large markets, and it's sometimes comical how people worry more about their appearance than what they are actually going to say or read when the red light goes on.

But this has been the case for some time and it's not going to change. Men like to see good looking women and women like to see good looking men on the air. It helps though, if they actually can do a credible, job. I hope this young woman you're talking has a productive and successful rundoing her thing on the air.

Unfortunately, she may be out of the profession by the time she hits 35 or 40 years of age, when guys are just hitting their strides. By the time a woman reaches abour 35 or 40, many of them get burned out and are also moved out of the prime spots, because they programmers and the consultants (what a joke those people are!) may believe that they might be attracting fewer viewers than before. So they are replaced by someone who is usually younger, reasonably talented, and 'easy on the eyes.'

Much as I like Erin Andrews, she's a prime example of this. She is okay on the sidelines, but her studio work is not network, or even major market quality. She'll hopefully get better with time. She seems confident and likeable and has a good, general knowledge of what she's talking about, but only time will tell. I believe Erin Andrews is in her early 30s, so unfortunately, she's probably not going to get a whole lot better.

    1. I have watched Norah O'Donnell for awhile now....I would say she will be 40 soon, but that is the hottest newswoman on national TV that is not a FOX b*i*M*b*o...

    2. Hmm...Marla is probably about 36 or so, but with Hispanic blood, she may look younger for awhile yet....In the local market, Roberta Gonzalez is much older [and is still credibly hot], ...or how about Vicki Livikakis ...who is still VERY hot!
