KTVU And The Week That Was; Saturday Rant

The KTVU story involves a lot of sidebars. After the initial shock and horror; the broadcast itself; Tori Campbell reading those names on auto-pilot, uproarious world-wide laughter, (then shock); the firings, now comes layers and layers of heavy-duty lawyering, on both sides.

So far, only Roland De Wolk has spoken and it was a mere tongue-in-cheek response to The Wrap that a lot of people failed to pick up. De Wolk has a lot of cachet in town and probably will land another gig if he so chooses...Same for Brad Belstock too who had the misfortune of tweeting out a message many people at Channel 2 felt was about right, but the world of corporate sensitivity to social media and its implications says otherwise...Many of you have said firing 4 people, (actually 3, since one was retiring anyway), is an over-reaction. NO. I said from day 1 that "heads would roll" over this: You have a brand, an image to PROTECT. What happened to KTVU will forever be stamped on that Oakland TV station. In this digital age, that means forever. Like, FOREVER! Think of this story: A college student is at a local coffee café in, say, Columbus, Ohio and overhears, "KTVU"--what's the first thing that comes to mind? Yep, THAT thing. See, that's the reason why 3 people are gone and more might be seeing pink slips later on. KTVU, as someone put it, the "60 Minutes" of Bay Area TV News, has a major stain on its reputation. There's a fair amount of grief, commiseration and hell over what happened. Really? Yeah and the sad thing is that even the most hardened vets over there are miserable. They have to live with this the rest of their professional lives and they just lost 3 of their friends, many of whom are damn good journalists....

WHAT, Rich, was IT that cost them their jobs? I'm working on it. And I'm working on the "source" that sent the punked e-mail; there's a HELLUVA lot MORE to this story, (bear with me); we're dealing with a complex web of various things and people, the unintended consequences premise, the "perfect storm" stuff that is still in the studying process. I believe the person, (not a source), who told me, it was their feeling, (and this person has been there a long time), that the whole "joke" was just that; a joke. That it actually made it past 4-5 people that should know better is still a Major Befuddlement to me. I'm still dumbstruck. I mean, after 2 weeks, there's a general gaze of: YOU DIDN'T CATCH THAT?!! HUH?!!

WHAT ABOUT TORI CAMPBELL? There's plenty of why didn't that brain-dead anchorwoman, (white woman), get fired? Fair question. Campbell wasn't fired, (for now), in large part because she recently re-upped and for considerable money; if they bounced her, it would cost them a lot of money and they'd probably have to pay her more and then the lawyers...That doesn't necessarily mean she's safe--everybody is still under the gun save for maybe one of the sports guys and the weather people.
The fact is, yes, the teleprompter is a powerful weapon and when you're, (Campbell), pressed into the last-minute, ("BREAKING NEWS"!) reading what MOST OF US saw after the FIRST "NAME" as a stupid, funny, Internet list of names, would have begged Tori to say, "Wait a minute--let's go to a commercial break, we'll be back in a moment."Too bad 'cause if Tori does that we're not talking about this. Not a peep.

I'm sorry, Tori, but you blew it. You're human, I get it, but you blew it and there is no excuse. Of course I'm going to get lambasted, (again), over my opinion, but please, this is that case of pure common sense. If Tori Campbell can't STOP and see the obvious than there's something wrong--I don't give a shit about READING, TRUSTING, the copy on the teleprompter as if it was THE GOSPEL. I mean, if one is that deaf tone there's a problem here. She's not a rookie for heavens sake, she didn't arrive from Toledo with a banker husband--she's been in the biz for 20 years, gimme a break!

MANAGEMENT: Rich, they threw everyone under the bus to save their ass! Uh, I agree with a lot of that thinking. And to this day, Cox isn't finished its business. As I keep saying, this isn't over.

Lee Rosenthal isn't exactly looking good at this point. He's not entirely at fault for this but it happened on his watch. Moreover, his "FIRST, FIRST, first, first, FIRST" dreck has a lot of bad karma and he wasn't exactly blameless. Some people have told me Rosenthal has "lost the newsroom"--if that's the case, then he'll be gone no matter what...Tom Raponi, the GM, a "good guy" by all accounts doesn't know how to handle a crisis. Repeated silence, (shit-canned, bullshit PR releases don't count and benign no-comments are useless) is not how to run a TV station. To Raponi's defense, I'm sure Atlanta Corporate had a lot do with this but Raponi could have done himself, (and the station, for that matter), a favor and handle the situation a whole lot better.

YOU'RE GOING TO TRY TO ERASE THE VIDEOS FROM THE INTERNET? Are you fucking serious? !! That's just great strategy, guys. Maybe too you can get them to pull the planes crashing into the Trade Towers too while you're at it. That's piss-poor management. That's amateur hour work not the kind of activity that pros produce. ...And bringing Amber Lee to the AAJA to CYA is a major embarrassment. Great. Further muddy-up the already ingrained clusterfuck.

IT WAS A MISTAKE, RICH.: Yeah, it was but it was a mistake that CANNOT happen in a TV News operation, much less a station with the call letters, K T V U. No, see, yes, mistakes happen, every day, in every profession, that's why they have a "clarification" section in the newspaper. THIS MISTAKE is unforgiving, unacceptable, and should have NEVER happened. Trust me on this.

LET'S MOVE ON RICH--YOU'RE BEATING A DEAD HORSE!! Really, then you don't know the business. You're not a media person and you don't get nor can comprehend the severity of this; forget its massive traction, its sheer "Oh Shitnesss" here and beyond, you simply don't understand the ramifications of what THIS is and how it will ruin the machinations and goings-on of newsrooms across the land.

And the people who work in the newsroom across the land ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT THIS!...they chat in the lunchroom, they kibbutz out in the field during breaks. The chatter is endless. Go to Twitter. Take a peek at the message boards. You don't know how much the yakkers, the editors, the EP's, the ND's, the rank and file, the assignment desk--they're all over this shit, so, NO, you're tired of this, YOU move on.

That's why this is a media blog.

SPEAKING of this: I do not take glee in scooping an entire Bay Area News market over the axing of 3 people. I wished the subject matter was more pleasant. It speaks volumes that hardly anyone here is still covering this ONGOING story. Which is sad given the enormity of this story--not just the story itself but its endless sidebars.

Been an interesting week and there's certainly more to come. Keep it here for the latest developments.

EXACTLY the point Rich. It's no longer an ONGOING story. You have pulverized this dead horse.

It IS an ongoing story. Watch in the next few weeks.

    2. I will agree with you that it is merely my opinion that this is no longer an ONGOING story.

However, YOUR opinion that it is an ONGOING story is contradicted by your own observation that hardly anyone is still covering this. Why do you imagine that is?

After breathlessly covering this for weeks, yesterday you reported from your secret inside source that, "the fake, joke e-mail that wasn't meant for anyone other than in-house laughter found its way, remarkably to the air"

Yeah, that's what happened. Trying to blow this thing up into more than that is silly. Your overwrought rhetoric, "It's abhorrent and indefensible" is ridiculous.

  5. I've said it before. I truly dislike A LOT of what you do and feel you should be held accountable for previous outright lies on this blog but, I'll admit, you've been owning this story. I keep coming back multiple times a day for updates. It IS what everyone in the biz is talking about and it's not going away. So thank you for what you're doing.

    Keep on trucking.

  6. I'd rather read this KTVU stuff than all of Rich's KGO radio bits! Remember those? Yeah, I don't care about that station yet I had to endure his endless rants about Ronn & Co. on a daily basis...
And, I still don't understand these firings. I-Team producer? come on! What is really going on here? When will we find out if the lovely Asst ND had anything to do with it? Bottom line is someone made the template. Now WHO was it???

  7. Rich, I hear there is a book and movie deal coming your way over this. Who should play Rich? I was thinking Joe Pesci based on this line from Goodfellas which I think fits.

"You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?"

    1. Of course Lieberman imagines a book, a movie with himself as the hero a la Woodward and Bernstein.

I don't know who would play Lieberman. Rush Limbaugh is no movie actor but he'd be perfect for the roll both in appearance and temperament.

    7. 3:45...You are more than a little word dense...both on the air and off.The prior poster used the word "roll" when she/he meant "role"..ergo, it's not an attack on anyone's appearance.capice? As for your prayer to your imaginary deity,"God hope you don't have children", did you understand what you need to make that coherent? Were you trying to sing "Ol'Man River"? Do you mean,"God, I hope you don't have children? or " God hopes you don't have children"?
I too am surprised, that Rush, a great verbal pontificator about family values, has never impregnated any of his four or five wives.
I'm just very happy to have a t.v. producer daughter with two emmy awards to her credit and my sweet grandbaby whom I get to spoil.
To get back to the thread at hand, I thought Debra Saunders nailed it in the Chronicle re" Fookgate".
As for whether or not I look like Julia Child, I knew Julia Child who lived down the beach from us in Montecito and loved to walk and observe the splendor of Hammond's Reef. She was quite tall and very engaging just walking on the beach, or in our studio at KEYT. I'd be delighted to have a life as remarkable as hers, any day of the week. Did you know she died in her nineties after lying down to take a nap, her kitten behind her knees purring, and a bowl of her famous french onion soup still warm on the nightstand...remarkable, such a simple and non-dramatic way to go.

    12. dear 9:32..I've got some advice for you. when I started in broadcasting in 1974, I couldn't believe how much fun it was and I still think so. We all knew then, as you should now, that it is notoriously non-tenurial. I decided to add to my survival skills by using broadcasting income to fund post-graduate education. Whether it's medical school or law school, or some other licensed profession, you are the one who controls how much or how little or at what age you work. The gratification is often attenuated and not so instant, but you can derive great happiness helping people secure their rights and benefits. It pays well. Additionally it's is a good thing to have under your belt if you are considering a political bid. Have you thought about your future? good luck.

      Delete
    13. dear Christine, Thank you so much for intending to provide "some advice."

However, while working my way through the your subsequent digression, I couldn't for the life of me discern any coherent theme that would actually qualify as actual advice. You have provided a sequence of barely connected, vaguely self-aggrandizing, statements about yourself and flowery homage to helping people, but no apparent point.

One is left to wonder about the ambiguous antecedent that "is a good thing to have under you belt if you are considering a political bid." And who exactly is considering a political bid anyway?

Even if you can't write clearly, you still know your grammar, spelling, and love to demonstrate your superiority in that regard. You should consider working as a proofreader.

      Delete
    14. Let me make it really simple for you. There is no job in broadcasting that is ever secure. If you have another professional skill that helps you survive, that's a good thing.I'm a lawyer, we do a lot of proofreading, actually.

  9. Rich,

I must tell you that I am very proud of you. You hit it on the head.

The email or news release was a joke, but when you are dealing with producers who have a new boss with a breaking news boner, like get it on the air now, now, now, mistakes are going to happen.

How could it? I have to know.

Please uncover the blow by blow on what happened because this will be a lesson in every newsroom across the country. Screw you guys who say stop beating a dead horse, you're scared you're going to get fired, and I'm assuming it's coming from management. So stop reading his damn blog because we in the news business trenches could care less.

We in the Midwest have worked for Lee Rosenthal and were laughing, high-fiving, more than laughing when this happened. And I'm not trying to be insensitive. This plane crash was a tragedy. But what KTVU did is indicative of the culture that Rosenthal operates under. He's a kid who desperately needs Ritalin, he wants more, more , more , more, and he belittles EVERYONE BEHIND THEIR BACKS. And judging by the news release, shoving it down the competition's throat. He did it in Indy constantly.

The anchor? C'mon. Even if you got the script at the last minute you have got to realize during pronunciation that something is wrong. Be on top of your game. For crying out loud, you're getting paid six figures.

And when a graphics artist who caught the mistake (she being Chinese and knowing the pilots' names were Korean) said something, no one listened.

To add insult to injury, you bring Amber Lee to the AAJA meeting as what? your token Asian? What an insult!

Pathetic! Gag orders, shhhhh, don't say anything, hey, let's yank the video two weeks after we're a laughing stock.

Keep at it Rich, hold your head up high.

Let this is be a huge heads up to overzealous news operations who feel that by getting it on the air first, you are now a new journalism course at each j-school and everyone in the country is laughing at you.

  13. Regarding Tori Campbell; she did zero wrong reading those names. They were vetted. She made reference to that fact when she read them.

If an anchor was forced to instant edit everything he/she read, a few seconds prior, a newscast would never happen. But how could she read those obviously phony names? Pull out an SF phone book. There are hundreds (i.e Hu Yu Hai Ding; Phuc Dat Bich) of similar ones...

I have had several anchors do just that while one air and before going to air. You just drop the story and move on. The viewer at home usually never notices anything.

      They are the final gateway.

    4. 1:17: Wrong on all counts. The anchor is the ultimate, and final, editor of any news story the the public face of the entire news operation.
Any news anchor who has ever been burned by bad copy knows it's the anchor, not the writer, who takes the heat. Even when reading copy "cold" a good anchor's eyes always are ahead of his/her lips, so the anchor knows what's coming, hard-to-pronounce words, etc.
While I have sympathy for Tori Campbell, she is most closely associated with the unprofessional conduct of other employees, she does not get a pass for failing to do her job and catch what was obvious to ANYONE reading or hearing those names!
The anchor is the final "safety check" between the newsroom the the viewer. She failed.

Speaking as a former newswriter, I can tell you that is complete bullshit. First of all, who can afford better lawyers? But aside from that, there's no way an anchor can edit copy, especially when they're reading it cold because it was just handed to them? They read what's put in front of them.

I personally ave stood there while Wendy Tokuda, Darya Folsom, Ysabel Duron, Anna Chavez and/or their producers ripped a writer to shreds. The anchor is touted and hyped and costs millions. The writer is a day-hire from Fresno who makes $20 an hour. Who do you think they shit on.

    8. So someone (KTVU doesn't bother to get name & title) answering the phone at NTSB confirms "Haywood Jablome" as a name. That would let everyone involved at KTVU off the hook if they rushed it to air?

Especially since KTVU previously reported the real names of at least 2 of the pilots? It's expecting too much for a news organization to actually remember their previous reporting on a top story? Or to check this latest 'scoop' against their previous reports? Evidently.

      Delete
    9. Regardless if she read it cold or had pre-read her copy. The fact is, is that she READ THOSE NAMES ON THE AIR and didn't realize they were a bunch of bullshit (when any human being with half a brain knew it). For that, and that alone, Tori Campbell is, and forever will be, a stupid, fucking idiot. Whether she likes it or not.

The people who defend her because "she was in the moment" don't realize it's HER JOB to make sure she's reading what she should be reading. She failed.

Has "lots of legs"? They acknowledged it. They apologized. They fired the people who at least they say were responsible.

What else CAN they do? Please list your suggestions below my post, instead of telling me what an idiot I am. Please, list them. Be specific. Don't say things like, "They owe a lot to the community," or "They have to start rebuilding their tarnished brand today." Say specific things like, "They have to go on the air at such-and-such a time and do certain things," or "They haven't yet done X, Y and Z. This is precisely how they should do them." Go ahead. 6. Anonymous "10:54 AM",

Is racism the "intent" of the offender (KTVU) or is it the perception of the offended (Asian-Americans or others)? In a way, it's a little bit of both.

Even though I am Asian-American, I do not think KTVU intended this to be a "racist" thing. This isn't the deep south. Asians are well known and respected out here. Mayors of both SF and Oakland are Asian-American.

However, Asian-Americans are right to feel somewhat offended. It may not be directed at KTVU but what happened on TV had played out in real life for many people in their lives. Asians (especially immigrants) are made fun of the accents or (surprise) their names.

So while KTVU did not have racist intentions (in my mind), people have the right to be offended if they choose to be that way. Calling people names will not help the situation.

Personally, I choose to observe this carefully and want to know how this mistake got to the air.

  25. Tell us more about this disaster Lee... No we don't know why he was fired in Columbus. Now is your chance to let us know the real story. He is already loathed by all at ktvu. Even before all this and the firings.

    1. I have friends across the interwebs on Facebook who still, to this day, put up memes about KTVU. They've never been to our locale, but this fiasco is still making an impact. Benghazi, not so much......

    2. To Ms. Julie Mendelsohn. Hi Julie, this is off topic, probably won't get printed, but I wondered if you are a descendant of the Great Baroque Musician Felix Mendelsohn? I know you're tired of that question. I just know that his violin concertos were so, over the top intricate and dazzling. I still listen to his piece called Scottish, inspired by his visit to the dark, misty glens. For those of us who like that kind of music, there can only be one Felix. Most know him from The Wedding March organ theme. Anybody else into Bach and Handel type compositions?

  27. Yes it's the same MO:

    1. Ask questions,
    2. When those questions are answered ask questions about those answers,
    3. REPEAT endlessly...

This way there are always unanswered questions - pointless, unnecessary questions.

  29. Rosenthal is about 33 years old. Wonder if he is in over his head?

    1. Off course Rosenthal is panicking. He spent four years as a news director of a fox affiliate in Indianapolis that got zero respect and the staff hated him.

He went hog wild on twitter bashing reporters of other stations for bad stories, specifically WTHR, the powerhouse.

      Why is that?

The general manager of WTHR at that time fired him in Columbus.

When you seek revenge...dig two graves.
