Stock Up and Stock Down on SF Bay Area TV anchors; KGO-TV's Daetz at top of the list

Ama Daetz
STOCK UP--STOCK DOWN

STOCK UP:

Ama Daetz: KGO-TV: Smart, charming, sophisticated delivery with award-winning smile and moxie. She's being positioned to become one of KGO's core heavyweight anchors along with Ashley and Carolyn Johnson. And she's, yes, beautiful.

Diane Dwyer: KNTV: She's been working the weekend anchor chair but my sources down in San Jose insist that management might be inclined to want her to eventually replace Jessica Aguirre. That's the plan, at least.

Mike Mibach: KTVU: I initially had my doubts about Mibach's ability to become a top-flight anchor; he certainly looks the part, but gradually I've come to enjoy the youthful, adept MO2 anchor.

Allen Martin: KPIX: Again, not one of my favorites at the CBS O and O, but you have to respect Martin's overall consistency and professionalism. And anybody who can get along with the news director is automatically arrowed-up at PIX. One more thing: Martin is a good news reader and working next to Liz Cook might grate on the nerves of others; Martin seems to be thriving. Good for him, good for PIX.

STOCK DOWN: Dave Clark: KTVU: Despite winning numbers in the morning, many viewers have never warmed to the ex-LA TV news vet. In spite a being a nice guy, Clark's quirky, on-screen scowls have become noticeably awkward. He's well-liked by a majority of the staff in the newsroom at 2 but I hope he finally got rid of his infamous picture of himself and OJ Simpson adorned at his desk. That was never liked by folks in the back offices.

Larry Beil: KGO-TV: Once and for all, the unmitigated arrogance from this ex-ESPN/KTVU tonsil has begun to erode his support. He has hardly warmed to KGO viewers; that's evident. The fact that he's being viewed from above by the ABC execs back in NY might portend for something negative in the future.

Brian Hackney: KPIX: Hackney has the backing of the ND, Dan Rosenheim, his good buddy, but the fact that Hackney hasn't found a permanent place at PIX's news desk is both revealing and pointed. More to the point, the folks at CBS O and O relations in NY don't feel kind to paying a guy big bucks to essentially float around and not have a firm place. That $300K salary might be Hack's undoing.

  1. I agree with all except Beil and Hackney. I watch Beil at 9 on KOFY and seems to do a good job. Hackney is the best "Science guy" since KRON's Anthony Moor. Hackney's earthquake specials are very informative and even as the third (wait fouth now ?) string weather guy, is more than able. In fact I rather have hackney than the Deanno guy. Just my opinion. Yeah and as the say... Ama can get that work My lawd !! Oh and she is a more than capable news deliverer.

  2. Awfully generous to say DC's stock fell. He's been at the bottom with no room to decline since his arrival.

And what's the deal with Hackney? He has the worst case of puppy love for himself. "My looks, my thoughts, the sound of my own voice...does the world deserve me?"

  3. Stock up: Henry Wolford, despite the early raddy like start,he's gotten his own personality out there.
Stock up: Paul Gutierrez, aka Mr.Amy G. Understated presence, funny sense of humor, its been a gradual ladder climb. Could be a long termer.
Stock up :Lowell Cohn. The only damn thing good on Comcast at 5 as a guest. The rest are vegetables you want to pick out of your plate. Ok,Ostler is good too. He's Broccoli..the one veg you can take.
    Stock down: KNBR.
Stock down: All white sports talk . 1955,is gone. Time to catch up.
Stock down: right wing Obama bashers and the economy. Its because of Obama I'm surfing like crazy on TV and radio--the ads,commercials!..Somebody has money to spend now.
    Later for more...

  4. I love Larry Beil and the 4:00 news. Watch every day. Beil delivers like a pro and has a terrific sense of humor. Interesting note: when Diane Dwyer parts her hair right down the middle she looks like David Bowie in drag...

  6. Such a deal!

Is anyone surprised that a 50 plus male would have as his top pick an attractive female news anchor with an "award winning smile." Sadly, that's what television news has been reduced to in our much maligned culture.

Hmmm... I didn't see KTVU's Frank Sommerville on your list. What's happened to his "stock?"

    1. Uh, you have some insecurity issues...I like Frank. I've said so about a hundred times on this blog, moron, I merely wrote a post highlighting some of the up and comers.

      You: stock down.

    5. Hey Rich: For a blogger who operates a site soliciting opinions, you certainly have very thin skin. Was there really a need to call 2:06 a "moron?" Are insults what it takes to get more followers these days? Although I've donated to your cause in the past, it will be a cold snowy day in July here before you see any more $$. Maybe you don't need any help any longer? 3:11 is right. Try to be a little more respectful of the people who post here.

  7. What, exactly, do you mean by these tired and well-worn cliches that came into use 30 years ago with local news promos:

    1) "core heavyweight anchor" (Ama Daetz)?

    2) "top flight anchor" (Mike Milbach)?

Style over substance, if you ask me. Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with the PBS News Hour.

    3. "Thanks but no thanks"

Who are you kidding, you watch the same local news that everybody else does, waste a 1/2 hour, then migrate to the garden of thinkers.

The 9er's cling to the idea that they operate on a higher level of consciousness. I got news for you, I watch the news hour too, and I'm an idiot.

  9. Ama has this huge personality, and she’s a natural leader in the newsroom.

It has became obvious that she was the perfect choice for this role on KGO-TV after a successful stint hosting the morning news on FOX affiliate KTXL-TV 40 in Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto.

She has helped create an even faster-paced newscast, putting an even stronger emphasis on owning local breaking news. That’s what she does.

Ama can hold her own with Dan Ashley.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Dave Clark deserves five stars.

Larry Bell has the most annoying voice on TV.

Mike Milbach: Please send him to a reputable dentist to have his false teeth re-aligned.

I only watch channel 7 because of Sandhya Patel.

Allen Martin is a breath of fresh air.

As for Ashley and Johnson: Unless they are reading the news, they add absolutely nothing, because they do not know their subjects.

    Alan Wang should get promoted.

  14. At one time, KGO-TV had the greatest pair of anchor-people in Dan Ashley and Terilyn Joe. Both were modern and fresh -- appealing to a very wide demographic.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Dan Ashley seems like a nice guy, although he goes a little bit far in raising his eyebrows rather needlessly while reading copy.

Carolyn Johnson is also pleasant, although she disturbs me because I can't tell whether I find her attractive or comforting.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Larry Beil is not only disturbing when he does his fluff (cough) reporting, but the constant head bobbing, twisting and turning are scary. He's far too animated

    ReplyDelete
  17. Perhaps the absolute worst news reader/attempted reporter not just at KGO--but in all the Bay Area-- is KGO's Ama Daetz. Sure she's a pretty girl and eye candy for Rich L, but she has a robotic delivery.

  19. Here is my fave: Carolyn Tyler. She cracks me up! I love watching her struggle and get words twisted. God forbid they put something with 3 syllables or more on the prompter for her. She comes off as smart as a box of rocks.

  20. Ok... So I've been staying up really late recently and my landlords did something to the cable so I've only been able to get Channel 7. Needless to say, I've starting watching Channel 7 until all hours of the night. At 2 AM the BEST news show ever. It's all rerun pieces but the anchors are soooooo funny. I can't stop laughing every time it comes on. All they do is joke around and make fun of each other. So you get all the regular news peices but with so much humor involved. It's like watching a reality show of Anchorman. I love it and am now a fan. If i get Tivo, this will be the only news show I record!

  25. "Award-winning smile?"

That's the stuff that makes for a great news anchor?

    What's this world coming to?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't stand dan ashley---so redundant and mentions unnecessary details which are not relevant to the news. Also, they would mention "take a look at that"---well it's showing the footage, just shut up!!! Reporters inform/notify the public, not merely "telling" the viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I rather see sandya patel than those ugly female meteorologists. Larry Beil is somewhat humorous and understands his sports.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Most of the reviews here make sense...even though I disagree with more than 75% of them. The following opinions are, well, only my opinions.

    * Channel 5 has Paul Deanno--the best weatherman in the universe. CBS Evening News put him on the spot just a few months after he took the job with channel 5 last year and he was flawless on network TV. The affiliate's executives must've known off the bat that they had the world's No. 1 weatherman, because they signed him as the chief meteorologist in practically no time. He won an Emmy in 2010...boom. And Roberta still rocks.

    * Ann Notarangelo is the station's best anchor.

    * You can tell Ken Bastida knows what he's doing; he's comfortable on camera. Whether anchoring a newscast, driving a car in bumper-to-bumper traffic or walking into a liquor store on live TV, Ken Bastida is an excellent journalist.

    * Kiet Do is inconsistent; he hits or misses his stories. The story on a woman who breastfed her baby and posted a picture of it on Facebook, for example, focused on why Facebook took the image down...but in the end, Kiet said CBS 5 "couldn't show" the image. In other words, he said the station censored the image after he did a story on why Facebook censored the image. Whoops.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hey, LieberMAN:

    I miss Dana King.

Allen Martin needs to crack more jokes. He's too nice.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think plenty people forget that just like them, journalists sometimes make mistakes. Still, chances are any journalist who makes a mistake never foreclosed on a homeowner. Journalists are righteous role models: They passionately seek the truth. And I bet that 99.9 percent of them love their jobs and don't do the work for the money.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @2:35pm Anchors are just the face of the station. They may have started out as righteous journalists out there passionately "seeking the truth," but now their job is to read a teleprompter, (that was written by someone else) be likable, and bring in ratings. The more ratings, the more advertising (commercial and web space) the station can sell, which of course means more money for the station. $$$cha-ching $$$ and possibly for the anchor (if they have a good agent) when it's time to renegotiate contracts. I do respect the hard work of print journalists, though.

  33. Ama is okay but nowhere near as good as you make her out to be. I could see her replacing Cheryl Jennings when she retires. But I don't see her as 6pm material. But I don't see Carolyn Johnson as 6pm material either. Not when compared to past titans like Elaine Corral, Suzanne Saunders, Terry Lowry, Wendy Tokuda, Leslie Griffith, Kate Kelly, and Roz Abrams.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The political reporting by KGO is so biased, that I will no longer watch KGO, and I was a loyal longtime daily viewer. It is unprofessional that a reporters own political views should be allowed to so shamelessly slant a story. 47. In his day, your boss and mentor, the iconic legend MZ was quite a TV news anchor! Props to Mr. Zwerling. I remember his newscasts on Channel 7 from Santa Cruz back in the 70s. First rate.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Getting rid of Dana King was a bunk move by a hack somewhere in the food chain. Best of luck to her.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My biggest complaint about Bay Area TV newscasts across the board: I hate how their news programs--especially the evening news--tries to scare you with the teasers. Seems like they're always saying something like, "what's in your cupboard that could cause cancer??" I don't need to hear things like that, especially when we usually learn later that there's no cause for alarm.

    ReplyDelete

  50. The news program on ABC 7 is too corporatized (-2 stars)

    ReplyDelete
  51. it's not uncommon to see the anchors, sportscasters and weathercasters to goof off every once in a while. I think they generally have good newscasts from the afternoon to the evening.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Overall, Channel 11 is my usual choice for the 11 PM news.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I used to watch John Kessler & Sydnie Kohara every morning on the Early News. I was so disappointed that the let John go & hired a very bland replacement. I used to enjoy having the news on as I got ready for work but I no longer watch channel %.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's sad to see someone lose their job, but one anchor person does not a news station make.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Personally, I Ama Daetz is a bit too amateurish for my taste.

    ReplyDelete
  56. CBS KPIX is awful without John & Cydnie. I don't watch, Frank is a stuffed shirt & co anchors are terrible. NO CHEMISTRY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ama Daetz is the MAIN reason I tuned into KGO 7 and can only hope that KGO is smart enough to renew her contract! She is a fresh face to an otherwise, sorry to say, 'aged' news show. In this day in age, it would behoove the station to do whatever they can to keep her.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Will some one PLEASE tell Raj Mathai that George K. pronounces his name as KITTYYAMA, NOT Kiriyama.

Everyone else at the station gets it right. Come on, Raj.!!

  59. Mr. Lieberman:

With all due deferred to your big ego and insider knowledge, it is impressive that KRON exists with no national affiliate but I am SO THANKFUL for this station.

  65. For the most part, i watch kron in the mornings before i leave for my semi crappy job. I enjoy trying to figure out which newscaster had a hard weekend. Bush Baby (traffic dude) is somewhat annoying but he does his job ok. I like how gary makes the evening blonde anchor feel uncomfortable. I see lots of people hating on Daria, i do agree she looks tired when she gets on at 5, especially on mondays; Her cocktail dresses make up for it.

The only thing i hate about KRON is stanley roberts with people behaving badly. It is stupid, immature and a total waste of time.

  68. Okay, this is the Bay Area and people come from all over the world to our area.

So when visiting business people turn on the television at their hotel to get the local news, our local stations' news anchors are an embarrassment.

They should all look, sound, and act like professionals.

Please, Mr. Lieberman. See what you can do with your influence.

  69. Like the news. HATE DARIA on KRON. This broad needs a good kick in the ass.

How far can I extend my arms so that my curvy body shows from the side?

Which cocktail dress can I wear for the 6 AM news?

How low can I show my cleavage?

How much bigger can I make my boobs?

How much longer can you make those extensions for my hair?

How much more phony can I look?

Daria, you old bag, stop trying to look 30. It is just not working for you. Maybe Pam Moore should take you aside and guide you back.

What is it that you are trying to prove? I don't get it. If your arms go back any farther, they are going to break.

  70. Welcome to the future of journalism! A seamless blend of news, entertainment and advertising that sucks at all three.

Advertisements in the news ticker scroll thing at the bottom of the screen, and frequent breaks to do infomercials with the broadcasters that are made up to look like news segments! Also devoting significant portions of the news day to some dude named Gary Radish so he can put his foot in his mouth and show off his cute half-his-age wife. And apparently hiring dudes who flunked out of broadcasting school to save money.

Hmm, what else ... oh yeah, segments that don't serve to do anything but advertise Apple and Motorola products ... I like that Stanley Roberts guy tho, 'cause I wish I could get paid to slouch around in a flannel all day trolling people on camera.

Bring back Evelyn Taft and I'll give it two more stars.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ahhh... Gary Radnich.

About 15 years ago I called him at KRON and left a voicemail message basically saying I had a huge crush on him and that I desperately wanted to meet him. I did my best to convince him that I wasn't a stalker and assured him I had never done any jail time. And guess what he did... He called me back!

He invited me to the studio for a taping of Sit Down! and of course I took him up on it. He could not have been more gracious and attentive. He gave me a tour of the studio, chatted to me while he applied his own make up (for tv) and made sure I was ok during commercial breaks.

We are so lucky to have Gary in our bay area world of sports. He's knowledgeable, down to earth, humble, funny and sooo, sooo charming. 15 years later and I still heart Gary... in a non-stalker sort of way.

You're handsome and sexy, too, Rich. Treat me to dinner at your favorite Chinese restaurant.

    Start coffee.

    Turn on KRON.

Traffic. Weather. More traffic. More weather. Gary screaming over the phone. The anchor team bumbles through technical screw ups. More traffic. More weather.

    Off to work.

KRON: I couldn't start the day without you.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh KRON 4 news. It is ridiculous, but oh so entertaining.

Thanks for the late night laughs.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Woe, we have some of the worse newscasters around. Why can't more intelligent reporters be put on TV instead of personality-types?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  82. I used to work at one of the big three San Francisco TV stations for a summer years ago. I was the receptionist. Haha ya male receptionist. So what. 10$ an hour for watching t.v and answering weird phone calls like when are regis and kathy coming back on? What is this tennis you're showing instead? Wow. I never got the crazed addiction retired people have with regis and kathy(now kelly) have until I worked here. There were people calling trying to hook up with the female newscasters. This one dude called every day and said "the bird has landed..the cougar is next" I got people arguing me about how some sunset beach show or whatever got moved to 2 in the morning and how that totally ruined their lives. It was an entertaining job. They had bay tv. back then and it was cool because I met a few minor celebrities like Linda Perry formely of 4 non Blondes. She was a total rock star chick. Met Dave Chappelle before he was huge. I asked him if he really smoked weed on half baked. He winked at me. Dude was hella cool and down to earth. Qbert...Sista Souljah. It was interesting to meet the newscasters though. Malou Nubla was a total snob but her sister Christina Nubla was so nice, remembered my name and always said hi and bye to me. But Pam Moore was the nicest! She even came up to me and introduced herself to me. She has the sweetest personality. Really relaxed and open. Wendy Tokuda was a favorite. Radnich and Vern were kinda funny but acted like they were bigwigs, Pete Wilson acted like he ran the place. I had just started working there the first few days and I was the one responsible for pushing a button that opened up the elevator to allow people to go up into the main building.

  83. Wow, that is some hard-hitting stuff, Rich: "How's the workouts going?" Move over, Ama Daetz.

For a guy who calls everyone in the media a shill-pot, meet kettle.

  84. Bottom line: best local news in the San Francisco Bay Area. KTVU, KNTV, KPIX, and KGO. Solid newscasts that are informative and to the point.

  86. Several "miss John Kessler" comments. He was very popular. It's flabbergasting he could not find another TV gig locally. Still think he could pull numbers for many news shows.

  87. Radish head READS MY POSTS,on this blog..and he gave some convoluted excuse of why his wife was giving him dirty looks...3 days later. You ask him,I'm not his PR guy. He also said earlier these posts by "texters" meaning me of course who blog post, in a real straight f-u voice, "Make me tear up". Oh, I know they don't get to him that way. That's my point..he's not what he says.
    Stan's posts move the blog.

    1. Also..anybody with a brain can figure out that when Kreuger says he read on the net he hates Kate...well,that would be my post. And today- Fred and Ethel said they would prefer to be named characters out of "Top Gun" Any idea where that came from?. Hell,Tim Kawakami only read Steve's blog to read what I said about him.

    2. TWO QUESTIONS FOR STAN

      1) You listen to Radnich in the morning on KNBR, you watch Radnich in the morning on his Comcast simulcast, you watch Radnich in the evening on KRON, believe that Radnich calls into KRON early in the morning, don't know if you catch that too along with replay of simulcast replay at night.... What do you do with yourself when Radnich goes on vacation?

      2) Why don't you start your own blog?

    5. Fake Stans? Why would anyone want to be Stan except for Stan? Do the other Stans obsess about Gary Radnich too?

  90. Just curious - do these anchors have to buy their own clothes? Do they get some type of allowance? Radnich use to look good in his suits - I do not think he wears one anymore. They probably do not fit since he has gained a little weight.

  91. I have so enjoyed Dave Clark's vacation from KTVU-2 the past two weeks. The newscast is so much better with Brian Flores. I wouldn't mind at all if Clara returned to L.A. We don't need him in the Bay Area. He's a real oddball.
