A Lunchtime Chat With NBC Bay Area's Marla Tellez

Speaking to Marla Tellez from NBC Bay Area on her way to the Giants game...

Pithy questions from me: A. Marla, what are you having for lunch: "uh, probably the crab sandwich, a Stella beer and a bag of peanuts."

B. Do you eat tofu? "OMG, it's funny you mentioned that, I love tofu!" I think she was eating it in the car.  (This is not good.)

C. Are you single? Just curious. "Yeah." (hum baby!)

D. Obviously, you like baseball: "I LOVE baseball!" (OK, dumb question from me but in the course of my history of hard-hitting journalism, I occasionally go rogue.)

Marla is on 101 nearing Burlingame and I have to go. Ah, what beautiful symmetry.

  1. I've seen her at my Santa Rosa gym a time or two, probably in town visiting her mother.

Was watching Breaking Bad on Netflix and to my surprise see her in one of the episodes. Actress too!

  4. Welcome to the Bay Area Media, Marvelous Ms Marla. Now,,,back to me and my somewhat pedestrian concerns. For those who don't know but do care, 910am host TOM SULLIVAN IS OFF THE AIR, as of June 3rd. He has been ever so quietly replaced by some dude named FROSTY (one name, the nerve!). So I guess my Pal Tom was just not bringing in the numbers or the revenue. Too bad. I liked Tom a great deal. Tom has a very believable on air persona. He sounds like someone I already know. I've only heard a little of this Monseiur FROSTY, he sounds okay, at least he doesn't have an annoyingly high pitched voice like some on KGO. Will the Tom Sullivan DUMP be covered any? I know many here never tire of talking about Sports Anchors and Weather Girls, but I like my intelligent (non hysterical) hosts when I can get them. Does anyone know where Tom is now?

    1. I, too, miss Tom Sullivan. I wrote an email to the station expressing my disappointment in replacing Tom Sullivan. The response was that numbers and revenue did not add up for a syndicated host out of New York. Their opinion is that live and local will produce the results they want. My suggestion to them was to dump Rush and/or push Alan Colmes back to a later hour. Since Colmes is no longer live, his show time out here is tape delayed anyway. Why not delay it a couple more hours? They could keep Tom noon to 3 (which I would guess is a difficult time slot to get ratings no matter who is on), put Frosty on 3-6, give Gil 6-9 (or flip flop the two), put Alan 9-midnight and then coast to coast. C2C is on for a whole lot of hours already, so cutting them a couple of hours wouldn't hurt.

I have nothing particularly against Frosty, but I think they eliminated their best syndicated host.

I also expressed in the email that local talent doesn't really mean much if the local hosts don't take calls from local people. The topics are as much national or international as they are local and we don't get to hear opinions from any listeners, local or not. A few "experts" are OK, but most of them aren't regular folk just trying to get by out here in the trenches, so their opinions don't express the real life experiences people have.

The 910 asst program director said Frosty will be taking calls eventually. Wonder if that means they'll free Gil up to take calls as well.

    2. Thank you, 9;35, for your well thought out, articulate answer to my question. Tom Sullivan has such an 'everyman' essence to his delivery, I didn't know he was coming out of New York. Not all stereotypes are true, I'm reminded. Not all New Yawk-ers are loud, crude, and rude, like some portray themselves. Twas nice while it lasted. One year ago, I had never heard of Tom S. Maybe there is local talent yet to be mined and refined. Yes, terrestrial radio is smaller than it used to be, but this medium is not dead.

  7. I heard one of Tom Sullivan's last shows. The topic was taxing online business. He didn't seem to get it (understand the issue.) He sounded old and confused. Anything going on there?
