2012 NAB Marconi Radio Award Finalists Announced; One one SF station nominated

You want radio broadcast prestige? A Marconi is right up there. It's a biggie. Not too long ago when he wasn't hawking mattresses and abandoning courage, Ronn Owens won one.

The 2012 Marconi Finalists were announced.

Only KCBS was nominated for "News/Talk" Station of the Year. That's it. No individuals. No news people, not one sports station nor a sports broadcaster or personality. Am I surprised? No, not really.

It's common knowledge that the radio biz out here is in dire straits. Gee, I wonder who's responsible for that? Then again, as I've repeated here ad nauseum, they don't really care about radio.

  3. The reason Radnich says his awards are in some box is because he learned long ago his show is mostly crap repeated every day and any awards are rigged or they simply want him to make a free speech at a dinner or luncheon.

  4. KGO and KOIT used to be regular Marconi Award nominees...and winners. How the mighty have fallen.

    1. Well, yeah, it's true. However, you don't just get "nominated". One PAYS for those nominations and all the hours and time that go into putting the nomination papers and exhibits together for the esteemed "judging panel" to peruse.

Today, many stations just don't have the luxury of the past in "entering" these contests so ... they don't.

The judgement of the "Marconi" award-winners doesn't just fall from the sky. Stations spend big $$$$ to enter these things.

It's like a big classroom project.

  6. This can not be true! Rich is there a mistake? Radnich's paid mouthpieces came here to tell us Mr. No Neck is #17 on some rag. No Marconi nomination for him!? Whaaaaaaat? I thought his hard hitting reports on the Khardashians and the Hip Hop culture on a SPORTS show would've earned him a nod...

  7. @ 6:32PM, And Cumulus' stock is somewhat overvalued if you go by P/E ratios. It trades at a multiple (P/E Ratio) of 7. While Entercom is at 3.5. CMLS is down almost 20% year to date, while ETM is about even.

  8. The nomination of KCBS for a Marconi presents a great opportunity for me to bring up what a fine job Jeffrey Schaub is doing there as the new reporter on the block. The station management made a great decision in hiring him, in my opinion. He has definitely hit the ground running!

Clearly, the management at KCBS knows a hell of a lot more about how to run a successful radio station than their counterparts at a certain other "news" station do. They also have a really great web site.

  9. Is it just me or are some of the music stations just out and out terrible? It seems as though they play the same ten songs over and over and over and over and over and over again! Maybe I'm just delusional as hell!

    1. No, 7:31, you're not delusional. Unless I am too!

One of the reasons I pretty much became a "talk/news radio" fan is that our Bay Area music stations increasingly became SUCKY beyond belief! They seem to play a very limited song list, and insert loooooooong commercial breaks.

I am in the process of switching to a more 21st century means of getting music in my vehicle. I drive all day for work and NEED me some tunes!

  11. Must be a slow day at KGOne, KNBR, etc. None of the usual trolls have said a word about the Marconi awards.

  12. The reason there is no individual being awarded the award is the fact that so many of the past award winners were ruthlessly fired for being too old and too expensive. These awards are not worth the paper they are written on and for those doing the exemplary work will have to do it as a matter of course to ensure future employment not as an internal bellwether for failures to follow. Cumulus has apparently shown some fortitude these types to improve its bottom line. Ronn Owens is the only one left with such lofty wage which some young kid can do for minimum wage, saving the company millions of dollars or fattening Lew Dickies bottom line. Just Award Radio Stations, better yet just Award Corporations..To Hell with the Talk host & his team! Maybe the Marconi Award show go to owners who makes the biggest profit in Traditional Radio!!
