Greg Papa's 'Bruce MacGowan joke'; An Insider talks about 'Insiders'

From today: The Raiders own PBP-guy, Greg Papa, who may have had access to real Insider info was nowhere on the scene. We will assume he was on vacation.

From an anonymous Bay Area sports figure:

"He, (Papa), was on 95.7 doing his radio show when the news broke….when asked by his partner if McKenzie’s sweeping changes might reach the radio booth, he jokingly replied, I’m Bruce MacGowan, and welcome to Raiders radio……”

---Earlier today from moi: Not a knock on Gutierrez, who I'm sure is a fine fellow, and CSNBA, but seriously, when was the last time one of their "Insiders" broke a really big story? YOU TOO CAN BE AN INSIDER!

From same anonymous Bay Area sports figure, reacting to my Gutierrez/CSNBA post about "Insiders."

"I recently half-jokingly said to a Bay Area employer of these so-called Insiders, “Geez, I’d like to be an Insider, like everybody else on the face of the Bay Area media planet.” The reply was, “Do you KNOW anything?” My reply was, “Do THEY? I mean, do these so-called insiders ever report on anything that leads you to believe they’re the fly on the wall at high-level meetings or in closed locker rooms? All they are is beat writers without newspapers.”

My point is this - the term “insider” has replaced the old term, “beat writer,” because there are no more newspapers."

Correctomundo.

  1. I'll say it again.
REAL insiders do not announce themselves as insiders.
REAL insiders go to great lengths to hide their insiderness.
REAL insiders only talk to REAL reporters... and only in underground parking garages in the middle of the night.
REAL insiders are in witness protection programs.

  2. Given all the business relationships between teams and media companies these days, I think I'll trust an "outsider" more these days for unvarnished truth.

  4. 4:17 p.m. is right on the money. "Insiders" are nothing but shrills for the teams. They will avoid controversy. They will write the slant as per the wants of the team they're covering. There's plenty of conflicts of interest if the media outlet is a team sponsor or if they have partial ownership of the team. No matter what the spin doctors on the teams say. No matter what those overpaid E-level marketing people on the teams say. That's the truth. It's all about money and protecting one's interests. The "truth" is controlled. Wake up people!

  5. In an earlier time, PBP announcers would not have other gigs going that would conflict with one another, and would not have to cross-step delicately so as to avoid offending employers...Bill King was the broadcaster, period, not an apoloigist or flack.

    Ouch. But true.

It seems to work like this: the sports organization puts out a press conference or press release, and one or two "news" organizations who actually field staff pick it up. The rest of the "news" organizations rip-and-read (or whatever the technical equivalent is for their medium) without any fact checking or additional reporting whatsoever, and publish it and call it news -- in hope of a few ad view clicks and a whiff of relevancy.

Add one or two pre-scripted interviews and a calculated star-player trot-out our two in front of the cameras and look, it's McJournalism!

The whole slickly varnished package is spoiled only by a few OUTsiders who dig up some real dirt and put it out in the blogosphere, forcing the "media" to look at it a day late and a dolla short.

Nor is this phenomena limited to sports coverage.

  7. KNBR's Larry Krueger-the idol of asshole's everywhere, has been advocating that the 49ers hurt Drew Bree's but, "Not after the whistle" he says to cover his ass-in his demented mind. Radnich..trying to make that irresponsible talk as "Just good fun"..sure,like Japanese tsunami jokes I suppose.
Krueger gets more bizarre by the day, more twisted in his comments. I'm sure Radnich just is enjoying hearing Larry more and more...And sad-Kate Scott going along. Some people sellout their beliefs faster then others.

  8. When did the comments box here change from portrait to landscape?

OK Rich and Others, which story can I leave this on?

What in 'gods' name is up with - wrong with Radnich. Today, talking about whether it would be GOOD to have Drew Brees out of the game via a hard lick - Raddy asks listeners whether they will side with Larry-Satan WTF.
Krueger almost had a coronary ON THE AIR, stammering oh no let’s not relive that moment.

Radnich awkwardly back pedaling, apologizing - stumbling - mumbling under his breath. Thought I heard him mumble "Alou".

What is going with Radnich's thought-processing ability...?

  9. The term "Beat Writer" would apply to any reporter covering Ross Murkarimi.

  10. If the obvious data is in front of the public, then there is no value.

A "Real Insider" can subtly connect the dots while quietly reaping the rewards. ... Can you connect the dots?

  11. By the way...what happened to Bruce McGowan? After he got fired by KNBR in 2006 did he resurface anywhere? I heard someone say they heard him on KGO the other day and a friend of mine recently told me that he was doing the Raiders pre game radio shows. Miss hearing his enthusiastic and friendly approach, a far cry from some of the nonsense that's on the air these days.
