Who makes what in the Bay Area?
Two years ago, I compiled a list of the twenty highest-compensated media people in the Bay Area.
Ronn Owens, (KGO Radio) was tops at just over $1 million, with the recently retired Dennis Richmond, (KTVU) second, at about $850,000. There are several mid to major anchors hovering in the $300-400K range, (Mark Ibanez, Dana King, etc) and Ralph Barbieri and Gary Radnich are in that neighborhood too, ($200-$300K respectively)
I'm not placing Michael Savage, (XTRA 860) nor Rush Limbaugh, (KSFO) in the discussion because they appear on local stations, but are syndicated. (Limbaugh is king with earnings hovering around $50 million a year, including his broadcast, book, and speech earnings; Savage earns a paltry $7 million or thereabouts)
Keep in mind that local earnings are considerably down from the good old pre-Internet days. At one point, Van Amburg of KGO-TV was the highest TV earner in the Bay Area, (about $900K in the mid 80's)
Someday soon, we'll post another Top 20.

Radnich took a near 50% pay cut of his $600,000 at KRON all local sources were reporting a few months ago. But,I wonder if Pam Moore makes much, if any, more?
ReplyDeleteI could slash millions myself as a GM as I find all of them interchangeable. And they would be paid like somebody who doesnt get their hands dirty and simply read the news to us.
Nobody is great anymore. A fine example of local news?-ch2 got rid of Mark what's his name after ten years and hired another guy who is just as dull and sits and reads the news next to a young pretty blonde co-anchor just like Mark did. A change of no change-they are all the same.
While they are probably all over paid, Gary and Ralph do it for a few hours (except for Gary's TV gig) and bring in some revenue and Dana is one of the lead anchors. Ibanez? A few minutes each night at the end of the broadcast 5 days a week. Hardly seems like a tough commitment. He doesn't get out there doing much radio or anything else, from what I can see. Glad they had him do some anchor work for that kind of money.
ReplyDeleteThey were half joking the other month when he and Radnich talked about Channel 2 (Cox) not celebrating his 30th year. Mark, ya got it easy! Keep flying under the radar and be glad they don't notice you. Coming up on my 20th with a Cox newspaper, I got my walking papers along with the whole department. And we were at about 1/10th of the salary for 40 hours of work. You got it easy.
Mike Savage must have had my Leiberman posts of his con job on his mind.He defended owning yaughts,Ferrari's,large homes by saying-"why not? I have worked since I was five"
ReplyDeleteMy point. He worked-and has been rewarded to this very second by a liberal government that he hates and rails against. So,the con job by the Savage Weiner is to do doomsday scenario for his knee jerk hater audience who eat that stuff up. He himself lives on easy street-not a worry in the world. His life's job is to create worry in you for money he can bank...suckers.
