San Jose Police auditor in firing probe is KPIX legal analyst; Update

LaDoris Cordell, the San Jose Independent Police Auditor, involved in a controversial firing of one of her employees, is KPIX/CBS5's legal analyst.

Might that be called a clear conflict of interest? Nothing here indicates the folks at 'PIX nor Cordell have any sinister intentions, but if the station reports on the story, or any legal story, for that matter, should they not use a disclaimer noting Cordell is a SJ police auditor?

Better yet, should not have Cordell's other job been mentioned when she commented on the Mehserle/BART murder trial, given her position as an independent police auditor?

Most legal analysts that work in TV news are lawyers or retired judges; John Burris, for example, is the attorney for the family of Oscar Grant, and regularly analyzes for KTVU, but obviously not on the Mehserle murder trial.

Cordell, for the record, hasn't commented for Channel 5 on this story, (and presumably, one would think she'll pass) and by all accounts, she's a very talented legal observer.

If the San Jose firing probe picks up steam, then KPIX will have to make a decision.

UPDATE: Dan Rosenheim, KPIX news director informs me Cordell is no longer at the station; she is still listed on the CBS5/KPIX website, which was checked before this post.

  1. Rich, this piece is based on an inaccurate assumption. LaDoris and KPIX recognized the potential for a conflict and mutually agreed to part ways as soon as she agreed to take the San Jose job.
Whatever happened to the idea of getting a comment BEFORE publishing the story?
