Ex-KTVU anchor battles back; George Watson at 60

A reader asked about George Watson, former anchor/reporter at KTVU

Watson was a mainstay at KTVU for many years battling many transgressions, including alcohol abuse.

He was once married to Suzanne Saunders, an ex-KRON and KTVU anchor.

Watson recently turned 60 and looks pretty good.

  1. He is looking great. I'm telling you that when they did his story about7-8 years ago or more..he didnt look to be the same man. His recovery has done him nothing but good. Congratulations again.

  2. I am thrilled to see this photo of George; he looks healthy and happy. We were friends many decades ago and we lost touch with one another after I got married and moved away. I would like him to know that I did try and get in touch with him on numerous occasions. I was always very fond of him and admired him very much. I turned 60 this year too, and it would be fun to compare notes. After all, we were in our twenties when we knew each other...and a lot of time has passed by.

  6. I never would have guessed that it was the same guy who worked at Ch.2 He's lost so much weight! I'm glad that things are looking up for him. As a casual viewer, I was worried about him. I thought for sure he wasn't going to live to see 60. I'm sure that he has seen and been to the lowest of the lows. Now he deserves to see and be at the highest of highs in his life. I'm happy that he is happy and even more importantly, healthy! He deserves it!

  7. He worked in Salinas doing writing and on-air, but I don't think he was a newspaper man.

  8. I hope he is still doing well. I see these comments are nearly a year old, some as much as two. He was a great reporter with personal demons. He looks so great in this picture! I ran across him one time, I remember the exact date: October 17, 1990. It was outside the Ferry Building where people had gathered a year after the '89 quake. His face looks puffy and red, and he did not look to me in good shape. It was only then that I realized he had some kind of problem because I never noticed it on air.

  9. Hey George,
Thought about you often over the years. Couldn't remember your name but I always remembered you, my favorite anchor. Today your name just popped in my head and I google you. You look well in the picture and I hope you still are. Hang in the George. Believe me, it's woth the effort. My life did not begin until I ended my relationship with alcohol, who's sole purpose is to kill.
    Take care

  12. George did a very good job as a reporter/anchorman on KTVU. He certainly did a much better job on camera than KTVU's current staff. KTVU was a much different entity prior to its FOX ownership. It was, in my opinion, a much better station back in its day.

Whenever I hear the names of the former KTVU alumni: Elaine Corral, Barbara Simpson, George Watson, Dennis Richmond, Pat McCormick, etc., I'm immediately transported back to my youth. Then there's the unforgettable KTVU 10 O'Clock news theme that's almost hypnotic sounding. Hearing that old theme on a Youtube video makes me think of warm summer nights in the late '70s and early '80s as a youth. I'll always miss the old KTVU.

    1. Fox does not own KTVU and never has. The station is still under the ownership of Cox Broadcasting.

  16. I wrote to George at KTVU in 1996 via the Manager and was totally shocked; first of all, that he even got the letter and two, the he called me when I was living in Utah. I was so impressed with one of his interviews I saw and wanted to offer him support and told him he should write a book and he said he was already going to. I think of him and wondered how he was doing. I think this pic was taken at his birthday (I think)

  18. George was not only a good Anchorman and Reporter, he was a very caring individual, very professional...and handsome. Several years ago George agreed to help out at the first annual 'My Fair Lady Senior Pageant' at the Solano County Fairgrounds, serving as a Judge. I was the Pageant Coordinator and was thrilled when George returned my phone call, stating that he would be happy to help out, and would give some airtime to the event. I found George to be a very caring person..very professional in his work , and very handsome, indeed! He was very attentive and respectful to the Senior contestants and made each feel like a winner. George...you are still very handsome and charming....whatever you are doing, keep doing. Over the years you have come to mind...you were an asset to KTVU-2! God Bless You.......Donna

  19. I am watching KTVU's A Second Look right now showing George Watson's report on the San Francisco 1906 earthquake. I agree with the other viewers' comments. I miss George Watson and the other anchorpeople of the old KTVU. They were professionals who report news with facts; now I seldom watch this channel and the other channels are no good either. I opt to get my source from the Internet. Too bad the old staff of highly professional reporters is gone. What happened to good quality news reporting? I googled George Watson and I am happy to read the positive update about him. Good luck to him and to the other reporters during his era. They were part of my day when I watched TV for news.

  20. Saunders worked at KGO, not KTVU

  21. Sixty? I call bullshit. I was 29 when I first worked in television, at KSBW in Salinas(NBC). George was the anchor and Suzanne the anchorwoman. I thought and still think they were both terrific. In any event, I'm 72. George Watson was not an anchorman when he was 17. George had the misfortune of being able to function quite well, while smashed. This is ultimately not a blessing.

  22. George was born in 1945. He was not in Salinas in 1962 at the age of 17. He was in Salinas much later than that. Yes, this photo IS from his 60th birthday party in 2005 at Don McCuaig's home in San Rafael.
