There are no murders in SF; Tiger media; Comcast closes in on NBC; Tuesday media pulse

There are no murders in SF. Oakland has a lot of murders by golly, but in the 415? Nada. We'll, maybe their ARE murders, but gee, if you read SFGate, you'd think homicide was relegated merely to Oakland. What else is new?

Check this e-mail I got from "Andy in Oakland":

Breaking News, Nov 30, 2009
Cops: Benicia girls beat classmate, posted online 11:28 AM
'Twilight' publisher announces green goals 10:32 AM
Publicist says dinner couple not 'shopping' story 9:24 AM
Tourist arrested in Disney fake bomb threat 9:05 AM
Man shot dead in West Oakland 10:21 AM
Man stabbed to death in Tenderloin liquor store 10:51 AM
Man shot dead near Santa Rosa 6:49 AM

Note: there were two murders in the Bay Area; Am I missing something here? Isn't the Tenderloin in Frisco? When a crime happens in San Francisco invariably the neighborhood, not the "city" is mentioned, BUT it’s always Oakland when there is a crime in my city, and many times it’s the East Bay when there is positive news.

Andy: I agree with your assessment and have been railing about this for years. The truth is, hell yes, Oakland has a ton of murders, over 100, (although down from last year's numbers)

The bottom line is that most of Oakland is very safe and livable. Every SF restaurant purveyor is opening up shop in the 510; in fact, Oakland is the #1 new-restaurant destination in the Bay Area.

Oakland murder fetish is nothing new; as much as I love KTVU, the Oakland-based station seems to always lead with the latest Oakland murder. Is it news? Of course. Sadly, any loss of life shouldn't be a mere statistic, but Channel 2 goes overboard. SFGate too, but old habits are hard to break. Indeed, "if it bleeds, it leads." Especially in Oakland.

  1. What, Santa Rosa isn't in the Bay Area?
Oakland is the 3rd most dangerous city in the country, behind only Camden NJ and St Louis. Richmond (#13), Vallejo (#43) and San Bernardino (#48)are the only other California cities in the top 50. San Francisco is #93, right after Phoenix per CQ Press' City Crime Ratings. http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2009/CityCrimeRankings2009.htm
