The 'Sports-talk star and the 'other station; Tiger overload; The 415 Thursday zone

**That veteran morning sports-talk radio 'star was seen by at least two of my spies inside the building of the other sports radio station across town. Wonder what the discussion was about? Perhaps some after-dinner mints?

**The 'Tiger overload: stupid jokes run amok; dumb pictures that morons like me in the media machine run, (hey, one was funny) pious golf and sports "writers" defending the schlub who managed to sell a brand that now has hypocrisy on the label. A day into this mess, I was sick of it and now, I just turn to the History channel.

**KNBR runs Adam Meyer commercials on its morning show, (Meyer is a Vegas tip-sheet guy) and Adam Meyer appears on the station's "regular" shows, without a disclaimer that Meyer buys time. Coincidence? Perhaps. You be the judge. And yes, even by knibber standards, how yucky.

**Wonder if Meyer has the over-under on the time frame of certain future personnel alteration?

**Citadel's day of reckoning is Jan. 15Th when the Fagreed Suleman party comes to a halt. Might be a good day to stay clear of the building at 900 Front.

**Comcast finally buys NBC; (about 51%)now everyone in this town is venting, A. will NBC/Comcast take a look at KRON? (no), B. will their cable bill go up? (yes, probably), which might explain why it'll take a year for the feds to approve the deal.

**You know you're getting read when the peeps that make fun of "little blogs" seem to clandestine fax/e-mail passages from little blogs to big radio stars who claim never to read such drivel. (Hey, not to worry, most of the time, I'm even right.)

**White House gate crashers to Tiger: Thanks bro!

**"FM radio in SF by the end of 2009 will largely be 'people-less", said the veteran radio PR guy about six months ago to moi, and by golly, he's probably right, save for a few who have survived the purge, (for now) and no doubt are taking a close look at the clock.

**Howard Stern to Tiger: "I have Raoul Felder's cell phone."

**What would morning radio be like without sleeptrain, tap plastics, penis-enhancement tablets, and kars-for-kids? Don't tease me.

**CBS' Jim Nantz to Tiger: Thanks bro!

**Where is Spencer Michael? Wouldn't it be so cool if KQED ran a nightly version of Charlie Rose? Budget, schmudgit; a simple desk, host, guest, and one camera, with a producer and director. How simple, yet how so thoroughly, far, far away.

**Sports note: Niners win game over less-than-mediocre Jaguars and the local sports minions sip the Singletary kool-aid. Again. I'm just wondering when they beat Seattle Sunday, if Super Bowl talk is in the dialogue.

  1. Vinny-
Enjoy reading your "nationally syndicated blog". But aren't all blogs "global"? And syndication has nothing to do with it.

    Several things:
We get it- you think KNBR should run disclaimers regarding Adam Meyer's appearances. Good point. But how many times are we going to have to read about it?

It's Jim Nantz, not Jim Nance. And his divorce may have been news for about 15 seconds, that's it.

The WH party crashers are not thanking Tiger. If anyone, they're ticked. They are looking for all of the pub they can get; the last thing they want is to be dropped from the front pages and tabloids. They're looking for a reality show, not to go back to anonymity.

I don't get the dislike of Radnich- yes, it's interesting that he may be talking to somone other than KNBR or KRON. But he's the best thing going. The rare occasion that he talks hard-core sports, he knows his stuff. He can throw out the pop-culture references and talk about whatever, and he seems to be a nice, decent guy. He "reads the room"- he knows his market. I suspect if he were in NY or Boston, his show would be passionate, intense, and all sports. But that's not SF.

As for your favorites- Barbieri and Tolbert- you got it half right. At least Tolbert can talk semi-intelligently about sports. Barbieri doesn't even bother to keep up. I'm amazed how often he has no clue about something going on in the world of sports. This is a guy who is paid big money to talk sports for 4 hours a day (probably more like 2 1/2 hours if you allow for sports breaks and commercials), and he has a partner to help carry the show. And he can't bother to read espn.com, or si.com, or catch ESPN news to know what is going on. Too busy with Tate and trying to figure out how to make a living in Europe so he can leave the US. It truly amazes me that he has lasted this long.

Say what you want about Radnich (and you will), at least he watches sports, reads about sports, and can talk about almost any sports topic. Barbieri can't. And if you think I'm wrong, listen to Ralph objectively for one week, and count how many times he says "I didn't know that", "I have no idea", "I hadn't read/heard that", etc.

  2. Dodger: first off, I've been critical of Ralph, so its not as if I haven't dug now and then; at least he's ENTERTAINING and the show is able to move on...as for Radnich, I have always been a consistent admirer, up until a few years ago. He began doing the same show over and over and overly-relying on his "staff". It was not funny, (my opinion) Full disclosure: Gary and I had some small, internal problems-I'll leave it at that. I will say that he's become insecure and it shows. Just listen to him. I could care less that he doesn't talk about sports. It's HIS show, and now that I write a media blog, I feel its my obligation to at least give my honest opinions. It's not just KNBR; I have ripped other stations just as I've also said nice things...I think Bruno is hilarious. I love Stern. I love and hate equally...Quick takes: Thanks for the Nantz correc...Yeah, I'm a little anal about Meyer b/c its so tacky...and thanks for reading.
